I got an unexpected epic deal on an LG TV.

Mikjul

Well i had a little cheap 18" LCD panel in my bedroom thay was not great picture quality wise but was used for my old consoles... It got a red line through the entire panel, which is really bad news... On it's last legs.

So i went into a local computer shop asking if they had any old IDE HDD's for a project i had in mind... Then there it was... Top shelf amongst a lot of old and cheap monitors... It stood out due to the panel thickness.

I asked the guy if it was a TV and sure enough he said yes.

I asked how much he would like for it, he said £20.

Got it off top shelf and had a gander at the inputs.... Holy cow!

DVI-D

Component

S-Video

Scart

Composite...

PC audio in and headphone out.

I immediately said yes to the purchase, i did ask if it had a remote or a power cable, he said no but pointed out that it takes a standard ATX PC power lead which i have in abundance as spares!

This guy was so great he knocked 5 pounds off the originak asking cost because i would need to source and vuy a remote.

Want to know what i actually scored for £15?

DVI on a TV.

Never seen that before.

But no HDMI? How old is this TV?

Around 2008 i think... Judging it's quality... A high end 22"

My PS3 connects in 1080p to it through DVI with HDCP no problem... Plus i use a beast mode sound system for my consoles so audio is taken care of.... PS3 never looked so damn good.. Almost like a different machine.

I have an old LG plasma HDTV from 2006 that has an HDMI port, that's really odd.

For 200 you are looking at a low end 30 inch with picture quality of a VHS.

for 10 USD I got a plasma from 2003 and its picture quality rivaled todays cheaper HD tvs. It was a commercial quality sanyo, and it had a resolution slightly higher than 480p but DAMN did movies look good on that thing.

200 pounds is about $300, look at all the options you've got

and these are technology thats actually half a decade newer...

1080p, 120hz+, IPS, LED, much slimer bezels, thinner screen, newer types of inputs, way better image quality, etc.

This is the best i can do with such a shit camera... The camera does not pick up nearly the amount of detail or shade difference in blacks that the TV shows in real life, but it's all i can do with a POS Samsung media player yeah its called that...

As far as I know, very few CRT TVs of any kind (including projection TVs) ever got HDMI.

Damn, was it 1.0 or something?

Probably. It is strange because sometimes it doesn't show up in the input menu. It wasn't labeled HDMI in the menu either, it is something else really generic like "digital input". The audio receiver doesn't get along with it well, but the xbox 360 hooked up works just fine.

AFAIK component was the highest end unput in a CRT after VGA and could support upto 1080i

Does the panel have a TV tuner in it? If not, it's not really a TV.

I just looked up the model number. It's just a monitor. Not a TV.

Anyway, sweet find though. Not great as a TV since its 16:10 aspect ratio, with sub-1080p resolution.

It has Freeview and an antenna socket.

It actually displays native 1080P with my PS3 which i cannot get my head around... Says 1080i on the TV but the console reports 1080P.... Must be some wizardry.

Actually what i think is happening, the TV accepts the signal but downsamples to 1050p, when i press the aspect ratio butyon on my remote it shows 16:9 & 4:3 options when the display is 16:10

Not noticed any strange side effects but comparing to my 1080p pc monitor the image is slightly squashed horizontally... I did wonder why games have practically zero aliasing on my PS3, along side the much improved screen quality.. It's a slight downsample which i admit looks bloody fantastic.
