Star Citizen developers show off external & internal multicrew destruction

Hawx

3 studios just for the RnD of the Engine? That's why it takes them so long to finish the game. Patches of a current engine does not make it a new one. It's still a current engine with the current limitations and current bugs. The way @Kloaked said that they will be rebuilding/upgrading the whole game for the new generations of gpus when the technology be available...There is very low chance that this will happen as it will take a lot of work to do that.

A lot of what you're saying lacks basic knowledge of how game engines work and how SC is getting developed. The German studio is dedicated to engine R&D. Other studios have artists/programmers/designers that have worked on CE in the past.

They've already overcome a lot of CryEngine's limitations, such as spending 8 months converting the engine to 64-bit to allow for large-world maps and building a new multi-zone physics system to allow for movement inside the ship while the ship is moving.

Stuff is constantly getting reworked and rebuild. That goes for all game development. Multiple game streams are worked on at the same time, so engineers can rewrite the rendering pipeline and add new features without it affecting the development of the game. They're currently rebuilding a number of ships to improve design and visual fidelity over the old models. A new visual culling system is also being added to CE as normal object culling doesn't work all that great in the large areas of space that the game has. The engine and game will evolve in time.

I don't know about the particular development on StarCitizen that's is why I asked in the first place and taking info from you. But just as I said before and now. This is not normal development of a AAA game where you have spend first to make the previz of the game with set design. Don't forget that every big change costs money and that's the reason why all game studios finish the mayor design early in the development before any modeling has began. The only game studio I know of who would throw everything out and make remake the game is Valve

Oh wow. Can't waif for NV's 3k series as well as AMD's 500 series to run this at 30 FPS. Too soon? I'll let myself out.

The ability to google properly is a skill of its own.

From my head I remember that it was vastly bigger game than any AAA. Has the studio done any other AAA games? Money is least of their problem right now. 3 years is more than enough to have near finished product. So the time is not a problem also. It's management, if they are trying to finish this game by themselves this will be a failure. Dayz standalone had huge following at the begging but they never came out with a stable release that I remember. Who plays DayZ now? I can imagine a lot of bad drama starting to blow up around this development.

you realize that every mmo/open world game takes ~5 years to make and some more right? 3 years is only enough time if you are delusional or are completely ignorant of what they are doing to build this game.

Star Citizens development reminds me of Duke Nukem Forever.

Don't think you followed DNF. It was in development for like fifteen years. And there was a 7-8 year period in the middle where they had nothing new to show. No interaction with community. If Star Citizen fails it fails but there seems to be nothing in common with dnf.

except that is what they are doing. CIG bought a full copy of the CE source from Crytech. which is the reason why they went with CE in the first place, that and the support CryTech was willing to give. They've already completely rewritten things so as to add in support for 64 bit floating point numbers and are in the process of updating the completely new netcode they wrote to replace CE's netcode to support the 64 bit info going across the network.

I mean, that's cool and all, but they really should be focusing on the core parts of the game and adding in the shiny things (like better explosions) later.

Yeah I just got a text from Chris Roberts all the studios are going back to work on the core parts of the game now that all 450 employees are done focusing 12hrs/day on solely making a ship exploding trailer.

Come on. Development is happening in parallel.

I'm perfectly aware of that. I'm just saying that the people working on those minor things should really be put to more useful work, like working on the core part of the game. Ya know, to help speed things along. CIG is pushing these "Oooooo shiny" things every now and then to give the fans something to get "Wow'd" about. It's a distraction from the fact that CIG is grossly behind on the development process.

May I remind you that we were supposed to have a full playable beta by now, and we're nowhere even close to getting that.

This work was done by three FX artists. What do you expect them to do? Go help the engineers with engine issues? All the FPS blockers are programming problems rather than graphical issues, so they certainly won't help out there. Destruction is a pretty important part of the game, it involves everything from their GOST (object state management system) to mechanics such as boarding and repair. It's very much "working on the core part of the game".

CIG has only ever provided estimates, not firm dates. They're not going faster or slower than any other AAA developers. Expecting a playable beta for a game of this size after less than 3 years is insane.

*slow clap* Wow, what a good pre rendered trailer. Almost as good as the one for Aliens Colonial Marines.

Uh, the entire thing was shot in-engine. If you had watched more than 8 seconds, you might've seen the bit where they're flying around the ship and shooting stuff off in realtime, with the same visual effects as shown at the start. They even say in the full interview that the entire implementation was made within CryEngine, intended for release when the constellation goes flyable in 1-2 months within the baby PU.

That's what the Aliens Colonial Marines trailer looked like. Quite a lot can be done with scripting.

People have no faith? These guys are clearly dedicated and aren't going to show off anything unless they deem it as fit for showing, thats why it seems like they haven't done much. They'd rather not show some half baked stuff, they're showing small parts of stuff they have completed as it would make no sense to show off something that they haven't finished yet.

The guys at Star Citizen have already said they don't want to show off anything that would harm the look of the game and potentially put people off.

That was so cool! I particularly loved the show and tell from the interior. This game is going to be spectacular.

They're clearly not making progress on this game. What a scam.

But this isn't even a trailer. It's a bunch of random WIP footage taken from an interview with their senior FX artist/tools specialist cut together.

The destruction is literally just an updated version of what they showed off at gamescom a month ago in the live multicrew demo. It's particle FX applied to their object state management system, which they've talked about many times before.

CIG have never shown off anything that hasn't ended up in the game. They're not stupid. There would be a huge fan & community backlash if they faked something.

I'm not saying that it will take 3 years to finish the game, but that they don't have the money to finish it in 2017. They only have 100mil for a game of that size is nothing

Again, props for them, I can't see them finishing this game if after 3 years they are still working on the engine...I can understand that they want to make the game revolutionary, but without any 3rd party investment they won't even finish it. Gta 4 cost 100 mil and took 3.5 years to make. SC is on another level with ammount of work and price for it, but the budget is the same....

Sorry, but you're just making incorrect assumptions.

On top of the $90 million raised in crowdfunding, they have another $10-$15 million from government rebates/incentives, then additional funding from AMD and MadCatz, both of which they have commercial relationships with. Keep in mind that the $100 million spent on GTA 4 was split across three platforms, not a single platform like with SC. Even at the high end of estimates, they're no where close to running out of money. They've said multiple times that if funding were to stop, they'd still be able to release the game.

They originally had investors lined up, but CR removed them once funding went past the $23 million mark, as they're not needed. People are still funding it to the tune of over a million a month on average.

DICE was still working on the engine up to the release of BF4, and continued to work on it for 2 years after the game's release, rewriting key components like the netcode and physics system to support higher tick rates. The german studio with the team of CryEngine engineers has only existed since the start of this year. There's no cut off point when work on the engine just "stops". I don't know where you got that idea from.

That's what no one understands. I've said this before: PC gamers need to make up their fucking minds. Do they want half-assed AAA titles so they can complain about how bad they are? Or do they want a properly made PC game that takes a while to make?

This bullshit from these gamers happened whenever GTA:5 kept getting pushed back. "ermahgerd it tuuk them dis long to evun maek a peecee port y r they taking so luuuungggg!!!!???!"

It never got delayed. They had a projected date on Kickstarter which was sometime in 2014, but they met a ton of stretch goals which added tons of stuff not in the original game which is making it that much longer to finish.

But why not release a base game and then add those modules in over time?

Frontier managed it with Elite: Dangerous so I fail to see how CIG can't manage it :/

Side note: Can't wait for it to be released though either way :P
