AMD's Embedded Radeon E8950 MXM - 'Tonga XT' GPU with 2048 Stream Processors

Advanced Micro Devices on Tuesday introduced its new lineup of embedded graphics processing units designed for various special-purpose and professional applications. Among the new embedded graphics solutions that AMD introduced, there is AMD Embedded Radeon E8950 MXM module, which is based on the highly-anticipated “Tonga XT” silicon with all stream processors activated.

The AMD Embedded Radeon E8950 MXM module features 2048 stream processors, 128 texture units, 32 raster operations pipelines and 256-bit memory controller. The chip is based on the GCN 1.2 architecture, it fully supports decoding/encoding of ultra-high-definition videos using H.265 and H.264 codecs. The GPU is compatible with DirectX 12, OpenGL 4.5, OpenCL, Mantle and Vulkan application programming interfaces. The small form-factor solution carries 8GB of GDDR5 memory and can drive up to six displays.

The AMD Embedded Radeon E8950 is the company’s most powerful and feature-rich embedded graphics solution designed for high-end casino and arcade gaming machines, medical imaging devices and military/aerospace applications. The product has maximum single precision compute performance of around 3TFLOPS.

“The demand for rich, vibrant graphics in embedded systems is greater than ever before, and that demand is growing,” said Scott Aylor, corporate vice president and general manager of AMD Embedded Solutions. “Our latest additions to the embedded product lineup help designers build mesmerizing user experiences with 4K multi-screen installations and 3-D and interactive displays. In addition, the powerful capabilities of our GPUs can address the toughest parallel compute challenges.”

In addition to the high-performance Radeon R8950, AMD also introduced slightly less powerful solutions, including the Radeon R8870MXM and the Radeon E8870PCIe with up to 768 stream processors as well as the Radeon E6465MCM, the E6465MXM and the E6465PCIe with up to 128 stream processors.

This pretty much 'confirms' that AMD should rollout a GPU (most likely the 380X) with the 'Tonga XT' chip. I suspect they'll announce it by the end of this year, as rumours have indicated it'll release in November. But still, on the topic of these embedded GPUs, they seem fairly powerful. Don't know much about embedded GPUs but those specs look pretty good to me :D

Those specs are for a 95W TDP card tho - that's less than the 960 :o

If AMD make a 380X that is as powerful as the 380 and consumes 120W and produces 95W of heat then the 960 will be dead for good xD

It won't be - 380 has a TDP of 190W and draws 180-190W (surprisingly it fits :D) - it will likely be a 220-240TDP card and draw around the same

interesting to see their new embedded solutions rolling out. It's probably going to be AMD's money maker for a while if their predictions turn out correct.

Those are rumors from back when we didn't even know the Fury line would be a thing and people were making stuff up saying the 380x would be in the position the 390x is now. Based on what we know about the 300 series now, I really don't understand how anyone can still be thinking the 380x will be even close to 300W. The 285/380 is an upgraded version of the 7950/280. 7950/280 was 250W. GCN 1.2 has better tessellation, color compression AND is more efficient than GCN 1.1 and 1.0. The 7950/280 and 285/380 botth have 1792 stream processors and yet the the 285/380 is 190W. Why would the 380x which is going to be an upgraded 7970/280x be 300W?

I was thinking the 380X was going to be this card - fully fledged Tonga XT with 2048 SPs. It would make logical sense given the 380/285 is the cut down version of this chip.

 

This card is pretty much an M295X (brought beyond the iMac limitation) with a reduction in TDP by 30W and with 8GB vram

Its not a gaming GPU!!! We don't need all this discussion about it being better or worse than a 380/390, they're in completely different product segments.

95 is still a massive amount of heat to deal with in the embedded world. Often there are a lot of very temperature sensitive sensors or precision amplifiers somewhere near to the compute unit due to space constrains. Also often they have to be next the dead silet since the operate next to people who are sleeping (e.g. medical device in a hospital).

Depending on the peoject you are working on, 95 watts TDP can be an engineeing nightmare. But when you really need the compute performance, you have to use a lot of power due to physics you can't bend.

But personally I consider a system using >10 watrs only to compute quite high pergormance (in the embedded world).

Mineral oil and 40 kg aluminium heat sinks are a perfect combination: 73 cores and a Titan X, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Oil
