Myth #1 : some people don't want to close any program and/or multitsk while gaming, and there a multicore processor (ok maybe not 18 cores) can improve the experience.

 

Myth #2 : "Testing with furmark" -> facepalm

 

Myth #3 : Faster ram does yield some benefits, but your money is better spent elsewhere, and more ram can help the type of people mentionned in myth #1

 

Myth #4 : Only Z chipsets officially support overclocking and other boards mostly only support the g3258 OC.

I think it would do you and the rest of us a huge favour if you would actually go out and interact with some people on this forum before you start blathering such inflammatory generalizations about the PC gaming community. Those "myths" are things that are spouted by the loudest minority, and it's gullible sheep who listen to them and believe that they're true. We're not like that. Hell, no tech enthusiast forum is like that. Get rid of your assumptions dude. I've never seen someone preaching to the fucking choir in such an arrogant, condescending and blanket-statement way, and it pisses me off. Congrats.

Not all of your statements are completely true, not all of those myths are totally false, and if you actually went out and did your homework you would know that. But you tried to see what the results on your machine would be, and went on a tirade despite the fact that all you have to test these myths is a dual-core from half a dozen generations ago. Things have changed, man. Games have changed.

Never heard anyone really say that and newer MOBOs are better for overclocking, and OCing your CPU will yield a snappier windows and better SLI performance finally if a game engine was made to run on more cores then an 18 core would be better. The Xeons right now are not ideal for gaming as it has more slower cores made for rendering non game programs. But if you had an i7 18 core clocked at 4.8ghz I bet you would not see the difference. Almost forgot but the RAM speeds actually do matter but not for gaming. In RAM heavy programs you will feel the difference.

Never heard anyone really say that and newer MOBOs are better for overclocking, and OCing your CPU will yield a snappier windows and better SLI performance finally if a game engine was made to run on more cores then an 18 core would be better. The Xeons right now are not ideal for gaming as it has more slower cores made for rendering non game programs. But if you had an i7 18 core clocked at 4.8ghz I bet you would not see the difference. Almost forgot but the RAM speeds actually do matter but not for gaming. In RAM heavy programs you will feel the difference.

Never heard "The gaming community" say half this bullcrap.

 

Not scanning through all the posts to see if someone has addressed this already. He is most likely responding to people who have a following in the gaming industry (be it professionals, engineers, entertainers, etc..) that mislead folks into thinking more powerful hardware is needed for something when it's really not. This is usually because that person actually has not even the slightest fucking clue what they're talking about, but they speak out of their ass because they want to seem 'cool' with the latest and greatest hardware.

It is for non gaming but things like photoshop or Linus how he used his RAM as a hard drive for his 10Gbps internet.

cpu frequency DOES make a difference, but usually it's only noticeable when you get to very high framerates.

Most of your arguments aren't even entirely true, such as the "You don't need a Z-series motherboard to overclock" or "Overclocking does nothing for frame rate".

I think the problem is how the grand majority of sites actually test. They go about testing 3 or 4 games with varying CPUs or GPUs and then declare a particular difference/no difference and move on. It applies to RAM, CPUs and GPU reviews.

 

The problem is that every single computer program is different, all games are written differently. Some games actually really benefit from increased memory bandwidth, there aren't many but there some and Arma 3 is an example where it can be worth 20% extra performance going from 1333Mhz all the way up to 2400Mhz DDR3. Its also a game that heavily relies on CPU clock speed as its mostly single threaded. But its rare to see a game behave like that.

 

So when you see one of these reviews showing 4 or 5 games it doesn't really represent all games, it represents just those games. Considering we have the whole range of games out there with varying different needs in performance sense I think calling it garbage advice is too simplistic. You can play most games with less CPU and RAM performance, definitely the majority, but not all games. Some games don't scale well with SLI, some not with crossfire and some require significantly more CPU than others to get to that scaling. Its a lot more complicated than these simplifications. The problem is almost no one reviews games widely enough (gamegpu.ru being an exception that test multiple GPUs and CPUs against all the games they review) to get to the bottom of the situation.

That's the best I can remember. I tried to tell him he got ripped off a bit (though that $2700 did include two monitors and generic peripherals)

#1/#2: Multicore CPUs can actually affect performance of SOME games. MMOs, particularly, like multi-core systems. Less particular, multi-core optimized games. While you, indeed, will NEVER need 18 cores, at least 4 is nice to have. I've found that overclocking my ~slightly gimped~ FX-4300 has some impact in World of Warcraft, but not to the degree of having more than 6-8 extra FPS (we're talking maxed out setting with Vsync on to reduce tearing. Pre-OC, it would drop to, at most, 54 FPS. Post-OC to 4.8GHz, it dropped to, at most, 56 FPS. This is on a 60Hz panel!). This is a particular case for a particular game. Definitely not worth generalizing because of it.

 

#3: totally agreed. 8Gb of DDR3 at 1600MHz is quite enough, but you still have to factor in what you do on your PC outside of gaming. 

 

#4: Z/X series motherboards aren't required for overclocking (that doesn't mean you don't need a k-series CPU, however) but they're built a bit more solid than the lower-end ones (B/H/whatever-series). It's just a beefier card that might be worth the slight premium due to the other features it has above cheaper mobos

 

#5: Open grill intakes/exhausts have been shown to have a better performance compared to ones with more case coverage.

IMO anywhere from 3 to 5 fans in a case is enough, depending on your components.

Dust can easily be MOSTLY countered by using filters on your fans (specially on intakes), but those still don't guarantee you won't have dust getting into your case. Short of mineral oil submerged builds, I couldn't find ANY PC that was 100% dustfree and/or dustproof.

The Gaming Community does make me cringe to be honest and I personally can not see myself drop over $1000 into a computer and call it a "gaming rig" and using any parts that have gaming branding all over it. I do also have to admit the "gaming community" currently is boring in the sense that nothing is really original about it, I say this because a lot of "gaming rigs" might have the best hardware for gaming in them and look great also but you have to admit most are not that original (which is fine) but I would not go around bragging about it, like we all do, but I can't see me bragging about my system if it didn't have a sense of being "original" to me, again another personal opinion.
