Why would anyone get a GTX 980 in this day and age?

I've never understood the purpose of it, because the 970/390 aren't much further behind and the Fury which isn't much more expensive than it slaps it to Jupiter. Could anyone explain the purpose of it?

 

Keep your comments civil, don't scream "fanboi!111!!11!!1!!1!" because this isn't about my GPU preferences.

I mean now since the 390 and Fury are out.

I found used ones in my country that are like literally 50$ more expensive than the new 970s, I am considering selling my 970 and adding this 50$ to get the 980.

The 390 was not out yet, 980 Ti also not, it was the highest performance (single) GPU at the time of release, the 970 was still behind it even if OC'ed (of course comes close) and now that the price has decreased with the 980 Ti, it may be worth it..

But the 390 is very compelling

If you only want NVidia here,  A 970 starts at 330, a GTX 980 at 500 and a 980Ti at 700+.

I'd get a 980 no problem.

Some people have exact budgets.

970/390 is for $900ish builds. 390x for $1000 builds. $1100 GTX 980, and anything more then $1200 you can fit a 980Ti In there.

I got the R9 390 8GB because my 6870 is ageing, though i have kept it for backup usage.

 

I considered Nvidia options, but went for the 390, it just fit my purposes.

Well than why did you ask?

Some people prefer Nvidia because PhysX or DSR or ShadowPlay or whatever, which may not be as good or present on AMD cards. It's not always about being a fanboy

I would still buy one you can pick them up if you look for around 400 ea and 2 980 in sli will distroy any single card avalable and for $800 that only $100ish more then the 980ti.

If you prefer NVidia features then you would still get a 980 or 980ti. I don't see myself switching over to AMD GPU's anytime soon. My next upgrade will still be Nvidia.

I would get a 980 if my budget fits it, no doubt about that.

 

If my GPU budget doesn't fit a 980Ti, then I would get a 980.

The 980 is pretty fast once you overclock it.

My 390 does 60+FPS in Far Cry 3 with 8xMSAA, i am now living the dream.

980 Ti goes for $650 

From 677 Euro here and that's the cheapest brandless card, 700+ for a normal brand 980Ti.

I wouldn't get it brand new. Even a KPE 980 at $500 isn't worth it. I'd only get a 980 if it was dirt cheap.
