Virgin Media Speed Doubling

TheUzu

Good news for the UK

Virgin’s Predicted Cable Download Speed Boosts for Autumn 2015

Current Package: 50Mbps [3Mbps Upload]
New Speed: 100Mbps

Current Package: 100Mbps [6Mbps Upload]
New Speed: 200Mbps

Current Package: 152Mbps [12Mbps Upload]
New Speed: 300Mbps

This is in addition to their expansion plans which plans to cover 66% of the UK population, unfortunately they only have presence in Cities and large Towns.

This speed doubling is likely to be in response of BT's plans to deploy a 500mbit capable product known as g.fast, which is a fibre node usually within 200m that they hope will be able to reach gigabit speeds in the future.

The upgrades would also give Virgin Media another marketing win to spout over BT’s new 500Mbps capable G.fast technology, which won’t begin its commercial deployment until around 2016/17 and it will then need a decade to reach “most homes” G.fast is also predicted to launch with an initial top speed of up to 300Mbps.

So the future is looking bright for internet speeds in the UK, and I hope to have 300mbit download by 2020 :)

Official statement from Virgin Media

A spokesperson for Virgin Media has just confirmed to ISPreview.co.uk that this is indeed for a boost beyond the current 152Mbps maximum, although the official details will be revealed in October. You heard it here first.

Don't trust Virgin. Not only that the max speed will only reach small percent of all clients but they throttle you down on work time... Not to mention that the connection quality is terrible with drops of packets sometimes. The speed is not everything. I sit with 50Mbps but sometimes can't play cs:go due to ping of 200-1000.

Well personally im in a BT area with 60/14, ive had Virgin at 100 mbits before and i didnt persoanlly see any problems other than the traffic shaping they used to use.

Generally if you can get Virgin, you can also get BT service too, some people will just see 80mbit vs 300mbit at around the same price and go for virgin media.

Well when the average monthly wage is like $500 they are not going to charge $70 are they, the advantage Romania had in deploying Fiber was that there was no copper for them to try and eek another 100 years out off like we have :'(

I have a very different experience with VM, I have a 152 Mb connection with them and I usually get around 160 - 165, don't think I've ever been throttled and if I have then it's not been noticeable and I get pretty damn good ping. Considering the fact that I use around 1.5TB - 2.5TB per month of data I would say that I'm pretty happy with their service.

Meanwhile the majority of the UK is still running 8mb or less.

If I've just gotten an upgrade from 30 to 50, will I then be going from 50 to 100 in the near future? If so, this is very good news indeed.

I'm currently on their maximum 152mbps line, SWEET CAN'T WAIT for nearly double the speeds! :) but I am kind of optimistic since they only just upgraded my local area around march of this year, so no clue how long this new planned upgrade will actually be put into action.

From the article

We will start the upgrade programme on 1 October which will offer a free upgrade to our base. This will roll out to 90% by the end of 2015 and the remaining will be completed in early 2016. As an area of the network is upgraded we will write to all of our customers in that area letting them know that their upgrade is ready and all they need to do to accept the upgrade is log on to their account online to confirm and we will then increase their speed.

I happen to live in both Birmingham and London, neither place has their download speeds throttled.  VM used to throttle download speeds but now only throttle uploads.

EDIT:  They only apply thresholds to their lowest tier packages of <30Mb/s, all higher packages don't have throttled download speeds.

"We've got great news for all customers on our broadband tiers of 30Mb and above. After listening to your feedback, we've decided to stop applying our traffic management policy to download speeds." Source.

Oh lucky you, with 10mbps upload, whilst I'm stuck with 3mbps upload. What I'd give to have 10 up when I get boosted to 100 down.
