I wish someone would go ahead and make a decent windows emulator.

 

Or just....drivers for games for Linux ffs.

 

What makes me laugh though, is people pretending that Windows or Apple have larger market shares than Linux. They do, but only in the consumer market, which isn't even half of the entire market. Linux dominates all things in enterprise. Why? Because it's 100% configurable to your needs (also because it's cheaper). Windows and Apple are not.

WINE is exactly that.

 

Or...I could use what I know works, what I'm familiar with, and what I know won't potentially confuse me.

Yes, I have not looked into using Linux or WINE.

Nor do I intend to. There hasn't been a situation where using anything besides Windows has benefitted me when using a computer, especially given the well over 15 years I have been using computers.

And I don't care if it's "under the radar". If I'm comfortable with what I'm using, I'll keep on using it unless I deem it necessary to change. Simple.

What "just works" isn't always what's best. Why don't you try using GNU/Linux in a Virtual Machine and see if you like it, WINE with CC and all.

I did, months ago. There's no benefit for me considering what I do.

Out of curiousity: What do you do that can't be done on Linux?

 

I see you are both a student and indie game dev....you can game dev for windows on a linux machine if I remember correctly.

 

Also: Why can't someone just reverse engineer Direct X to work on Linux? I know it would be illegal, but at this point, f**k microsoft.

There are currently no viable alternatives to Windows for an OS and even if there were, you would still probably be spied on.

You will not be spied on with GNU/Linux. Want proof? Anyone can read the source code and know exactly what's going on behind the scene. That's the beauty of free/libre software.

 

As for no viable alternatives, how is GNU/Linux not a viable alternative?

It doesn't, but it works for many games, such as Skyrim, and it is also gaining momentum for native games due to Valve pushing it hard with SteamOS.

You will not be spied on with GNU/Linux. Want proof? Anyone can read the source code and know exactly what's going on behind the scene. That's the beauty of free/libre software.

Y'know, this type of commentary is complete bullshit.  Most people who use Windows do not have the know-how to un-program, bypass systems, root out problems of an operating system, and all the other lingo that goes along with the rare few who could find a way to use a beast of an OS and tame it.

People do not expect to be spied on, and do not have the skills or desire to try and stop a devil of a program (the OS is a program, too) from doing ugly shit.

Unity does, but a couple of things:

 

1. You can disable it, and since Unity is libre/open source, you know it works

 

2. It is being disabled in the next release if it hasn't been already

 

3. You don't have to use Unity with Ubuntu. Ubuntu GNOME, Kubuntu, Lubuntu, Xubuntu, etc.

Most people also don't even own their own routers, they use the routers provided by their ISPs which have deliberately minimal functionality (at least from the end user point of view. They have a bunch of nice spying functionality from the other end)

I agree especially considering that windows usually costs money and that's kinda because it is supposed to sort out the lack of user friendly things usually associated with open source operating systems. TL;DR "I want stuff to just work rather than trying to learn and sort it out myself and so I am willing to spend money."

You can't see the source code, so you don't know if it does or doesn't. I don't have definite proof, but what I can say is that there are known backdoors in Windows Update. Microsoft can add/remove software at any time at their will. There is also a privacy issue with Microsoft Security Essentials or Windows Defender if you use real-time detection. It sends snipits of your data to Microsoft.

 

I also think the update that put the "Reserve Windows 10" logo sends Telementry data to Microsoft, much like Windows 10 itself does, but I don't have a source ATM.

Why doesn't someone just reverse engineer DirectX to work on Linux. I know that's essentially what WINE does (it has it's own DX version), but do it just for the hell of it, and then put in on every torrent site possible?

 

Basically, why don't people pirate DX12 out for linux. Release it into the wilds of the internet, and then watch as microshit cries because people don't want to be spied on constantly.

No, I cannot prove my Win 7 does not spy on me, and I do not know to what extent it does.  But I'm not going to upgrade to a new OS that I know is built around spying, has all their latest spying ideas built into, has far worse ramifications than whatever they thought up for Windows 7 from several years ago.

I'm not going to make it easy for them.  When this system dies, that I just built last year, I might very well be 100% done with computers.  A love/hate relationship I've had for 30 years and the hate seems to grow more than the love.

They did with DirectX 9. It's called Gallium3D, but it's really only used for WINE.

Also, I might as well say that everyone is right for doubting these claims. The original author didn't provide any specifics or reproduce-able tests, probably to try keeping people from proving he's full of shit if these claims are false and he's just scaremongering, so I'd rather wait until more verifiable results come out and for Microsoft's official word on the issue. Also, I'm pretty sure you'd notice 80MB of data being uploaded to MS every 15 minutes, especially if you have a slower connection, like most rural parts of the United States or the entirety of Australia, or have data caps. Or, worst case scenario, both.

 

Not that Microsoft's gained any trust, but we saw what happened with the Xbox One. People hated the console as it originally was. Microsoft listened and did a complete 180. Same thing with Windows XP, people hated that OS until SP2 launched in 2004, three years after the initial release. There's nothing saying MS won't do that again.

The main idea that those wise founding forefathers had, is this:  man is evil, should not be trusted, and needs checks and balances against anything from becoming too powerful -- wisdom which is now lost in my generation.
