people bashing skylake now in terms of gaming will actually upgrade to it next year seeing how games are performing on it. i really hope dx 12 does something for everyone in terms of cpu no matter what gen amd or intel.

What everyone else said. Skylake is not meant to be an upgrade from Haswell-E. I'm on an older westmere and waiting on Skylake-E which will run circles around Haswell-E systems.

Worth upgrade for AMD users like me. *stare my 5 years old AMD system

 

Does your system actually lag, and not play what you want?  Then yeah, otherwise who cares how old it is, what the chipset is, and who makes it?

What if I am coming from a Pentium 2? Why get a 4770K when I could get a 6700k?

It's not the best solution for upgrading if you already have a decent rig.. but that applies to pretty much everything.

 

You don't upgrade from GTX 970 to GTX 980 for a mere 8 FPS more in Crisis 3 at cost of few hundred bucks

If you have Devil's Canyon inside than sure.

But like me who have i5 2500k ( still running every game on max settings though:)) That will be a very good deal. CPU is one thing but new z170 board and ddr4 will benefit you in many ways, making this purchase a good plan for the future upgrades.

Intel's Billions of annual R&D hard at work. I know people love to blame AMD for the lack of performance gains because bulldozer is (bull)crap, but clearly intel are not able to defy the laws of physics and keep leaping ahead in cpu performance. Hell, broadwell is currently the best gaming architecture on the market, but only because of the 128MB cache on the 5775c, while Ivy bridge is still the most efficient for gaming. They should have called the latest architecture skyfall (swedish for downpour) for all its worth, sadly.

  • You cannot say a CPU is better by looking at the amount of L3 cache it has. For an example, AMD's FX Processors.
  • DDR3L is not laptop RAM. The "L" stand for low voltage. Laptop RAM is SO-DIMM -- different form factor.
  • Z87 and Z97 cannot natively support 4-way SLI when the CPU can only provide a maximum of 16 PCI-E 3.0 lanes. Same goes for "Broadwell" and "Skylake."
  • "Haswell-E" is the Enthusiast platform on X99. "Skylake" is the Mainstream platform. If you were to compare "Haswell-E," compare it to "Skylake-E" on X199 or whatever it is.
  • X99 costs more because more R&D time is put into the platform. The Extreme i7 Processors had to go through more vigorous testing before Intel releases them. As you said, X99 is used by people such as graphic designers, higher performance computing, simulations...where calculation errors may not be acceptable / can ruin months of work.
  • The media and the consumers had high expectations....because Intel advertised there will be up to a 30% improvement in gaming. Key word, "up to."

skylake is for those who either don't have a pc to upgrade from or are upgrading from sandy bridge and below, where there will be 30-35% performance increases. skylake is not meant for a haswell user upgrade.

Or people like me stuck with a FX-8350 and Z97 motherboards are running out of stock here in Australia so I have to buy Skylake + Z170 + DDR4 for my upgrade.

Well, depending if the difference in performance actually impedes the performance you'll get.

In all honesty, even if the 6700k beats the i7 5820k in gaming by a small margin, the extra cores is always nice to have.

ofc its nice to have. But its also nice to get a solid clocked, high IPC CPU out of the box. Not everyone is into Overclocking. Especially not when freshly bought.

I can understand mild overclocks within stock voltage from begin with. But i wouldnt risk any degration on a freshly bought 5820k, If the reason to buy it is to have it for a long time.

the tech report has already proven that the 5775c is currently the best mainstream i7 for gaming, beating the 6700k easily. Sadly the 5775c is suffering from huge delays.

There are a lot of people delidding Skylake due to temps. It's a hot CPU. 5820k isn't as hot in comparison.
