Except that it's an impossible task because you would need guns to enforce that kind of action. Not to mention immediately starting an unwinnable civil war.

I don't really know about any of that, so I guess I'm not in a position to argue against you. It was more about why people shouldn't have guns, rather than an reason to put it into practice.

It's simple tactics really.

1. Politicians aren't going to go to war against the majority of their own adult population (look up the population of the US, then the population of those in the US who own guns)

2. Quite a large number of the US military likely comes from those people.....not going to kill their own families at the behest of some dictator wannabe

3. roughly 1.2 million combat troops versus tens of millions of people hiding in the woods and cities with hunting rifles? (snipers are more effective than typical combat troops, psychological fear etc) unwinnable situation unless they were willing to go nuclear or bring back carpet bombing on civilian populations.

4. The police aren't going to enforce it because they live in the same area they police, and they don't want the inevitable retaliation that would come as a result of attempted gun confiscation.

Basically, take all the reasons why we lost in iraq and vietnam, and multiply them by ten. There was a state recently that attempted to create an "assault rifle registry" (gun registration), and it failed miserably. Not because it didn't get enough votes, but because no one complied and the police simply didn't have the manpower or the money to prosecute that many people.

I mean that I don't know if anyone would actually go to war over this. I'm sure some of the crazies would, but I think most people would just do it and go sulk for a bit. Then realise that it's not a big deal without them.

You greatly underestimate the consequences of allowing yourself to become a disarmed population. Just ask yourself why your own government seems to do whatever the hell it wants despite people not agreeing with it or approving of it.

People in the US would definitely go to war over this. Although it might not get that far once the majority of the police and military quit their jobs and say "screw you, you go enforce it."

Aside from banning filming of certain types of porn, I don't really know of anything else that I really care about. However, if they did something the whole country hated, then in the next election people would vote for other parties and whatever was done could be corrected. (I think, I don't really know how it all works to be honest).

You're not the first country to fear this. Many people in Australia felt the same, and now it seems that most of them don't even care.

Oh how cute. You trust the voting system at face value.

Votes are not a legitimate incentive for politicians to obey their own population. Violence is the supreme authority from which all other authorities are derived (it's the reason we obey the laws ffs)

Violence might be the reason you obey laws in America, but it's certainly not the reason in every country. Not all police forces are armed and beat people to death for fun.

If anything, it seems like you just make an argument to why getting rid of guns would be a good idea.

Wasn't trying to do that but eh okay then. I was trying to point out that I personally don't vouch for guns and I don't really care for them but I guess if someone else likes them and is responsible with them, then I guess I don't really care (again as long as they're being responsible with their arms).

Tell me, in the UK, where the cops don't have guns, what happens if you refuse to pay your taxes (not sure if that can be done over there. Not sure how your tax system works compared to ours), and refuse to submit to the police that show up?

What happens if you "resist" arrest for protesting the government? Large men in suits that say "police" will arrest you, by force if necessary.

Sorry, but violence is the ultimate authority for all living creatures. You can't escape this fact. You're making the distinction between lethal violence and non lethal violence, which is not a distinction that applies to that statement, because it's still a form of violence.

We just get a bunch of letters: "You're overdue" "Pay xxx amount immediately" "You've been served under the Default Notice Act" "We're taking you to court so you can find the best way possible to pay off your debt" < That last one usually means people can pay at the very least £1 a month and still get away with it because they're not actively avoiding the contract and there's no legal action that can be taken against you.

You certainly don't get people knocking your door down and thrashing you, that's just barbaric.

Refuse to show up to court. See what happens. At least that's how it works in the US.

That's my point exactly, the US is built upon violence but don't tar the rest of the world with the same brush.

Tell me, what happens in the UK if you repeatedly don't show up for court for something like that? At some point, someone has to show up at your door and force you to come to court, or else no one would pay any taxes at all.

How the hell would I know what happens in the UK? So everyone who isn't in America is in the UK?

I live in New Zealand, A island country off near Australia.

You will get a visit from police, the police will only kick you head in if you act our first. Because the majority of the population here isn't armed there is no need for the police to come in you home and beat the shit out of you.

You would have an arrest warrant set out for you, and then the police will actively search for you, but even then they won't beat the living shit out of you, if you co-operate they'll happily let you walk out with them to the car, some won't even put handcuffs on if you're compliant.

If you start mouthing off at them, then they'll be forceful, but only to get you down and cuff you, they won't actively out of their way to boot you in the head or force their knee into your throat like you see in America.

You're missing the point. You're so used to that happening that you think all police forces are the same as the states, shoot first and fuck the questions. But the fact is they aren't.

If you were to ask the average kiwi why do we pay our taxes, you wont get the reply "because I am scared the police will come round and hurt me". I have been late on my tax return once, they fine you with heavy interest so people pay it.

As for the court thing, I have no idea. But, from watching our version of COPS, Police 10/7, It's nothing like the states they normally just turn up at the house and take the guy away. Our entire mentality is different, guns and violence do not shape the country.
