Remember the days when it was actually AMD > Intel

When the Pentium 4 was actually the one that had worse performance then the competing Athlon 64 while running hotter and drawing more power?

When Hyper-Threading first came out and it didn't exactly help that much, so Intel stuck two Pentium 4's together to create the Pentium D, which was once again mopped by the Athlon 64 X2.

I still went with Intel though (for some reason, I don't remember) for my first PC, which was a Pentium 4 HT with a GeForce 6200

Aaah, good times.

It might shift back to AMD. If the rumors about the Zen architecture are true then we should expect a dramatic performance jump with a significant drop in heat output.

Fingers crossed that they are, not because I hate Intel (far from it), but because competition is good.

I've built 3 PC's, but none for myself... In fact, I'm using an iMac that my dad bought for me as my desktop. Awkward...

Please don't say "SSD drive." By doing so, you are literally saying "Solid State Drive Drive" and causing my brain cells to commit suicide. The same applies to HDD (Hard Disk Drive) and PCIe (Peripheral Component Interconnect Express).

Nope AMD used to dominate the CPU market for performance back in the days then Intel really stepped their game up and AMD fell flat on their face.

Nope. It was AMD>Intel before the Core 2 Duo and pretty much AMD=Intel from then up until Sandy Bridge.

i know , however amd>intel is saying intel is bigger then amd , amd<intel , is saying amd is smaller then intel . get where im going lol sorry >.< randomness of old math classes jumping back

and yes i do remember the good old days of amd being superior and intels monopoly being non existent  , oh how i wish those days would be back.

It might just happen but I'd expect it to be a while. Back in the Pentium 3 and earlier days though Intel had better IPC then AMD just like it is now, so it's definitely possible there'll come a day where AMD regains the crown

kinda stupid, but i was 6 when i got that computer, in 2006. vista had come out, my dad upgraded and i got his old one.  then in 2009 i finally dumped 2000 (yeah, i kept it for 3 years, and it was really old) for windows 7 prebuilt. then built my own pc last year and loved it ever since.

But...but... but I thought AMD products have always sucked, and have always run hotter? They've been known for that since the beginning of time right? My extensive 1-2 years of experience in the tech community makes me an expert and it means I can laugh with authority when someone says "AMD might come out with a cool-running high performance part" and assure them it can't POSSIBLY happen, because... it's AMD right? I mean come on... Isn't weak power hungry products something that AMD has always traditionally done...? No...?

I mean it's not like AMD could ever make a product like that, because they've neeeeeeever done it before right?

Come on, back me up here!

(sarcasm... it case it somehow wasn't painfully obvious)

I had an Athlon 64 3400+, so I certainly remember. Those were interesting times.. as I recall, Intel was in panic mode and had to re-brand a Xeon as the Pentium 4 Extreme Edition just to stay competitive. But am I nostalgic? I wouldn't go that far.

I don't feel like I have any stake in whether AMD or Intel are doing better than the other. It's just a matter of facts. I just want good products, and right now Intel's got them.

My first AMD was an APU. I am in college and ran out of money so I had to sell my $2k computer for cash and built an APU machine. Pretty impressed by it to be honest. I wish more programs would take advantage of it.

I really wish AMD the best and hope their new GPUs are beast.

Honestly I don't expect that much from Zen, I think it's going to be a big improvement but I don't see them competing with the Intel extreme chips any time soon.

I don't either, rumors are usually slightly, if not extremely, exaggerated. Like when Devil's Canyon was rumored to allow for 5GHz on air cooling, when people thought the then unnamed 5960X would have 12 cores, or when the GM200 core was thought to be for the 980ti or 990, not another Titan and would allow for easily playable 5K gaming with a single card.

Rumors will undoubtedly get blown out of proportion as more people climb on the hype train, but I still think that Zen and the R9 300 series will at least start to even out the playing field for AMD, allowing them to gain back some market share and start competing again.

I've built 3 PC's, but none for myself... In fact, I'm using an iMac that my dad bought for me as my desktop. Awkward...
