Experiences with non-techies

Personally I lost faith in humanity decades ago when I was working retail ... that's when I learned something not many of us are aware of;

regular Joe/Jane is dumb AF... seriously, common sense is way less common than you might think!

When I was talking about common sense, that's what I had in mind;

There are LOT more of these people out there than one might think!

OK so I found some new ones, but then forgot most of them.  I still have this though :D

I saw this link in a webpage.  Notice they've taken the common idea of re purposing the enter key for emphasis with regard to something they are talking about.  Except, they didn't - they used the shift key... and changed it to "delete".  *faceplam* there is ALREADY A DELETE KEY!!!

There's a reason RAM is super low latency, 10+ Gbytes/sec and HDDs are the exact opposite.

I am well aware of that. I was wondering why having lots of icons on the desktop would affect performance so much.

Had someone call a flash drive a hard drive today

Got an Android, never going back to apple again (notice I spelled apple with a lowercase and Android with an uppercase)

She has an OLD hp laptop. Dates back to 2006. I'm not entirely sure why it was slowing it down, but me organizing her desktop and deleting extra copies of files seemed to help. So I'm diagnosing that as the problem. :P

Remove the duplicates, run CC cleaner to clean up temp files, and then defragment the HDD, remove unwanted programs/bloatware, and programs from the bootlist (is that what it's called?) that aren't used frequently

Oh.  I was confused because you asked "how" to the post saying that having insufficient ram will hurt performance.

Wut?

Before I accidentally misinterpret someone else, are you asking about the ram issue or the desktop icons? ;)

Yeah, sorry. I just went back and looked. I was referring to earlier in the conversation, where somebody said their mum having lots of stuff on the desktop hurt performance.

The combination of the two... Having 500 desktop icons will have a very, very small impact so I'm just curious why you said if the user has a small amount of RAM it would hurt performance. Technically he is correct, but the difference would be so negligible that it might as well no.

An old man and family friend, so to say, had asked me to go install him Windows on his iMac has he needed it for work(?). It'd been a couple months I didn't see that computer when I last repaired all the software-side damage he had done to OS X.

He managed this time to literally break the color schemes of the monitor without even touching the calibration settings in the preferences. I myself wouldn't even know where to begin to do such thing on my Mac. The white was so strong and bright it could hurt my eyes on the long shot. I discovered he had installed the "cleaning utility" known as MacKeeper, a legitimate way to bring your computer to its knees with ease because you were smart enough to fall for the trap while browsing the Internet. He accused the computer of doing strange stuff with windows... yea.

I removed 14 installers of it, cleaned the library but the damage had been done already. I made a new account and told the man to take his stuff and copy it on the new one, then delete the old account. He was like "no I can't begin adding everything a-new!". Yes you can, you did the damage, I fixed it again for free. As long as you're not paying me for the services that's the way I do things. Got other stuff to do to care that much about your endless stream you're having...

lol so much for macs being the ideal "safe" choice for people like that :D

yeah that confused me too; I don't see how that could happen

Yes I know.  It confused me too :)

I never did.  Look back again and see who brought that up ;)

I was mainly wondering why people were asking (or seemed to be asking) how having insufficient RAM would hurt performance, since to me it's fairly obvious - swapping/paging is painfully slow

Having insufficient RAM would hurt performance, yes. But having 500 icons on your desktop is not going to cause the RAM usage to increase significantly. I've corrected the original quote where I said 'you're' to 'he is' as it was @cooldogz123 who said the following:

Come to find that the reason her computer is slow is because she has about 500 files sitting on her desktop, and every time she downloads something she feels the urge to click the link 7 times... as a result downloading files 6 or 7 times over.....facepalm....

How was having files on the desktop making it slow?

Yeah, I wondered about how that was possibly connected but whatever; there was already one mystery too many at the time :P

Just to completely remove all doubt and obscurity once and for all: :)

  • Having too many desktop icons should not significantly impact system performance
  • Having too many desktop icons should not significantly impact RAM usage
  • If RAM usage is too much, the system will be slow, but that's not really relevant here because of the above

"Newbie" should tell you something.

I got on this site last week to get advice on building a computer to run Blender, a 3D program. Got some very nice replies that I'm sure will help me a lot.

Stumbled across this topic in which I hardly get any of the clues you are making.

In school computers were these greyish boxes with the green letters on the screen, and I totally missed the train of progress for the next 15 years or so.

O no,....I did play some "Larry in the land of the Loungelizzards", which it seems makes me kinda cool again.

Since you have to be a hardwarespecialist to be able to make convincing looking textures, light effects or animations in a program like Blender I suppose I'll have some catching up to do.

Don't worry; I'm sure there'e a car thread talking about hilarious things non-car-people have done, or a doctor's thread talking about medical nonsense they've heard :P

Point is, we may be on one of those as the "victim" :D

So you know everything about everything and have never done anything inexperienced ever?  Seems a little hard to believe... ;)

One of my friends is a doctor.  During the ebola scare, a mother came in asking about ebola shots for her and her kids.  He informed her that no such thing existed, but they did have flu shots (it was flu season).  Her response was "Oh, we don't believe in those."

At school I have always been more knowledgeable about computers than my tech teachers.

For example one time in Tech class (first day of school). The teacher asked if we knew how a computer worked. So I answered In a long explanation, eventually she had to make me stop talking because i was taking to long to explain in detail. After that she let us learn about windows (theOS) By letting us explore it on our own. Long story short we ended up arguing about that going in to the BIOS of the computer is not HACKING.
