Why Does My PC Take Forever To Restart

Shaan5

I have windows 8.1 on an SSD and it boots up instantly but for some reason, when I restart it, it takes 30 Seconds-A Minute

Is this something to worry about

Didn't know where to put this so I put it under OS

Thanks in Advance

Nope. When you shut down Windows 8, it's not the full "shut down" that previous versions of Windows had. It's basically closing all running apps then hibernating (saving RAM to disk), turning it back on it re-loads the whole OS image that was running back into RAM on startup, which from an SSD is very fast, and on top of that it's just directly reloading an image, rather then rebooting the entire OS which again is faster then previous versions of Windows

When you restart, it actually terminates every single process then shuts down the PC. When it turns back on all the processes and drivers have to be reloaded after the OS is loaded, like every previous version of Windows did regardless of shutdown method, and this takes longer.

TL;DR - On Windows 8, booting up after "shut down" is faster then booting up after "restart". This is normal.

Try this.. may not help but it is worth a try.

Hold Windows key + R
Type in "msconfig" without quotes

Got to BOOT tab.

Set Timeout to 3 secconds.

Apply, OK.

EDIT:

You may also improve your booting speed if you go into Advanced Options in the BOOT tab and set Number of Processors to the max number you are allowed and also check Use Max Memory.
