i5 14600k vs ryzen 7 7800x3d

I am looking to buy a new PC ~£1300 and was wondering which of the 2 cpu above to get. I play lots of FPS games and RL but also I do large programming project both personal and professionally on this PC. Let me know which you would recommend or if I should get a different one altogether.

I would say the Intel.

 

AMD is better for gaming, but Intel is great for both gaming and productivity work.

If your budget allows, sure. Just don't fall for the loop of "I'll get the better one because why not", before you know it you'll be stretching for an i9.

AFAIK programming is not really heavy on multi-threading, correct me if I'm wrong.

Also entirely depends on what they are writing really.

 

Its basically a massive "it depends"

 

Not like the 7800x3d is a slouch at this by any stretch of the imagination.

I most write c# applications in vb.net but I have made really time operating systems for personal projects

That's a good point, I wouldn't spend anymore than 1400 so it would just take away from gpu etc

Exactly, I think you're best just sticking with the i5, unless you want / need the extra cores of an i7

Z boards are only really for overclocking and more premium I/O

 

If you do not plan on overclocking, or do not need a lot of USB devices, then a solid B760 board will work great

I am not planning on running any overclocks tbh, can they have ddr5 or only ddr4?

You can get either, the 14th gen CPUs offer support for both generations to help ease the transition

For the RAM: Not sure if it is the same for the Non-RGB Vengeance, but when I got mine there was a kit made for Intel (XMP) and a kit made for AMD (EXPO), try and get the Intel one: CORSAIR VENGEANCE DDR5 RAM 32GB (2x16GB) 6000MHz CL30 Intel XMP iCUE Compatible Computer Memory - Black (CMK32GX5M2B6000C30) : Amazon.co.uk: Home & Kitchen

For gaming 7800X3D easy win, for "programming" we need to know more. For game dev and normal app and web development my 5800X3D is plenty fast. Can't imagine how heavy the coding and compiling actually has to be before core count start being very noticeably impactful. Maybe like AI stuff and large format data then Intel but again, we' need to know then if ecores aren't a deficit and mabye full on cores from something like a 7900X might be more useful.

and compiling is often more cache heavy then thread heavy.

But for my own comfort I would go AMD just because of wattage

Intel CPU at load pulls 100 more watts so even though its faster, in games, its perpetually putting that out, and in production

I don't do any game dev, I do mostly large application development within vb.net in c#. I have started written large real time OS. I also do some other projects but no where near as intensive. I currently have a ryzen 5 2600 and it takes over 20 mins to compile some section
