hotz didn't hack the ps3...and the hack he did do ..was very basic..

the group that released the level 0 keys were the real ones...hotz then took that and ran with it

right. George released the firmware decrypter publically, so he was responsible for opening the door to CFW

if I pull the corner of my door with a wedge, and stick a rod in, I can hit my power locks. You can do that on a lot of cars.

I mean, if you want my tape deck, go ahead.

I have a feeling if you do that to one of these rovers you'll need a degree in advance computer sciences to stop the alarm and disable the engine immobiliser.

Intriguing issue. It's not like car makers have anything to lose really, it's not like people are going to steel the software for a car then go and make their own. I wonder what the motive is for this?

That's probably exactly what would happen. There's a huge ass market for aftermarket cheap Chinese vehicle parts.

@Sharkyx1

There are self driving cars on the road I see them daily in the are I live in in CA.

After market Ecu's are illegal in this state. You can not make legal engine modifications in this state. If said car is modified in any way to change the performance of the car it can no longer be register in this state until it is returned to its stock state or allowed mod by the dmv. Only cars that are considered  classics can have modifications and drive on roadways. Cars made by custom shops with said performance tweaks have to have all vehicles inspected to be road worthy.  Also there are  random inspections for mods to cars in almost all of southern CA so far as to have a ramp as for officer to check under the car. And as for  being allowed to make what ever mods to you car that you like no you should not be allowed to. Safety should always come first and a chip or a Vtech controller don't equate what so ever to the openness of the request  being made here. They are asking for each and every person to have access to the cars code.  Having If you are into racing or something along those lines and prove you are i see no problem with you going thur a trusted third party to get a reprogrammed ecu or a fuel to air management system. I go out to race days at several tracks  we have safety inspections 3 times before  we are allowed on to the track. Most of the tracks unless you are working with a known race team don't allow uncertified equipment.

It's a asure revenue stream, and they will set the price they want - not the price defined by the market.

The same with Apple.

And this is why I would rather own a 60's or 70's muscle car.

There should be better protection laws saying that things you buy from a company become your property so long as you are not reselling said product to make money.Pirating music is no different than letting your friends borrow your CDs or DVDs. Companies should not be licensing products to consumers the same way that software or any other non physical good is used.If I buy a car that cost $36,000 I should be able to do with it as I please. If I void the warranty then that is on me.

Can we just replace the DMCA with that statement? Verbatim?

I pay fully for the games I "possess" but as far as the DMCA is concerned, I still don't own them.

I own a 2006 Hyundai Tiburon GS, if you think I'm NOT going to modify this shit out of it to squeeze every drop of performance out of that 4banger engine, then you're an idiot.

there is absolutely no reason we can't modify, maintain, and HEAVEN FORBID repair our own vehicles.

I'm afraid if I buy  new car, and clean my floor mats, I'll trip a  floor mat sensor and have to use some odb2 thing to clear it.

The hell? What....... This doesn't make any sense. What the hell am I going to do with a on-board entertainment system ? Do FUCKING WHAT ?! I doesn't do much except play the radio and maybe if your lucky a DVD.   And what is this non-sense about hackers ? Are you a goddamn black hole ? There are hackers everywhere why the hell would they need a goddamn car to learn how to hack ? Also what about all those YouTube videos teaching me how to fix my car? What you going to do trying to claim copyright ?

Also pirating music is so easy and everyone does it, you taking a video off of youtube and downloading the audio, you are pirating, sharing a song with your friend that doesn't have the disc well you are now helping your friend pirate. Why on earth would/how anyone want to pirate audio off a radio ? I just need the song name and artist and I can look it up within seconds.

When I purchase a car its MY CAR NOT YOUR CAR ANYMORE MY CAR. What hell is the world coming to? What is next you can't watch movies because you don't own the case of the movie ? because you could steal the cover art and make it easier, for bootleggers to trick people into purchasing their versions of a movie or something. I don't know

NEVER GIVE UP. NEVER STOP LEARNING. DONT LET THE PAST HURT YOU. YOU CAN DOOOOO IT

No I was thinking next they'll try and make it illegal to sell used cars because well you don't own it so it's not yours to sell.

I'm not going to go into detail but I used to work with car ECU's doing re-mapping as is very common these days. The idea that they think people can't/shouldn't read their software is ridiculous.

As for the stupid amount of work that you have to do just to change the simplest of things on any modern cars these days is crazy and in my mind is definitely a tactic that they use to force customers to the dealers. For instance, before mid 2009, you could easily read the ECU of most cars through the common OBD2 plug inside the car. After this period however, some manufacturers started building in "protection" into the ECU's so that they could not be read/written to through the diagnostics port. So what we ended up having to do is remove the ECU physically (which in itself can be a big hassle), open it up and connect directly to the PCB inside to be able to bypass the protection.

Best era for cars in my mind was around 2004 to 2009ish where I think we had the best balance of technology and modern systems, yet the cars were still relatively easy to work on without the ECU's going crazy just because you changed a battery.
