I was wondering....

Why shouldn't you pre-order games?

Is it a morale thing or is it just because people play it safe and don't want to get scammed of their money?

For me? There isn't a guarantee you'll get the game any time soon. The dates can be pushed back forever, and I don't like investing in vaporware.

The projects never end in my line of work.

It doesn't exist yet .You don't know just how good or bad it is. Pre-ordering tells the developer you're ready to pay them no matter how good or bad of a job they do. They get burned but promise a better release for the next game so your little ass will do it again. Pre-ordering is bad and is bad practice and is bad for the industry. Don't buy something that doesn't exist.

Pre-order "exclusives" only to eventually become available to everyone.

If I've played a beta and like the game, then I really have no issue pre-ordering the base game.

When it comes to DLC or tacked on content to the base game for an additional price; I don't buy those.

Why I don't pre-order (unless in rare cases) includes these reasons:

  • you cannot trust the developer to release on promised time
  • you cannot guarantee the game will be what it claimed to be (promises children, for example, and then removes it last minute)
  • you cannot guarantee the game will function/function decent enough
  • they could do other screwed up things
  • you are basically advocating the developer's laziness and greed

I should say that the biggest reason is Duke Nukem Forever, such a great example.

Personally, I'd rather see a developer deliver a solid, working product before dropping money into it. One that lives up to the promises rather than rescinds upon them, one that isn't terribly broken or to see the developer prove themselves before I decide to drop money into their game. Oh, and to avoid promoting greedy business tactics like pre-order culture and overhyping.

Because Developers need to fucking learn to ship games that are finished and/or finishable (if that's a word)

the poll questions make no sense. clearly the reason for not pre-ordering is because Developers are releasing broken games, and unless you want to reward them for that (and end up pre-ordering a broken game), you should avoid pre-ordering.

Really, what are you getting by paying early? its not like there is a limit on the number of copies for a digital game...

People are going to buy it anyways even if broken... and that's a bad thing.

Because entities like Ubisoft exist, that's why you shouldn't pre-order video games. Especially on PC where you can never be sure if the game will even be playable due to extremely bad ports. Wait for the game to be out, let others be the beta testers.

the only games i ever preordered were mass effect 3 what an epic fail and Star Citizen. the reason not to preorder is that you have no idea if it is going to be any good. because no matter how good a game was its sequel might be a giant turd best example Mass effect 3 and no not just because of the ending ME2 was better in almost any way.

Preordering tells the publisher to allot even more money to the marketing team instead of the development of the game

This usually leads to trailers and other promotional content that have more flair than the game actually has

The only game I pre-ordered was MGR: Revengeance on Steam, but that was because I had already played it on Xbox 360.

I PERSONALLY Will preorder a game if I think it will be a good game or if I was already going to play it. There is nothing wrong with supporting game developers to finance their project while they are making it. Preordering shows that people want the game. I think it's also good idea to not preorder if you are skeptical of a game or the game developer company already has tons of money. Then you may want to wait and find out. I most likely will preorder BATMAN Arkham Knight because I really want to play that game no matter what.
