Why Z170? Why not Z107?

Right here's my rant. A very CPU/motherboard related rant. 

 

As you know there's new 14nm stuff coming this year. And that includes a new chipset. The new chipset in question is Z170. 

 

And so we begin. 

 

(I know there was Z68, but lets keep the series ending in 7 shall we)

 

In in order, we had, Z77. Which was the 7th series chipset and i imagine the second 7 is the desktop stuff.

 

Then there was Z87. Which was the 8th series chipset. And as you imagine the other 7 is desktop stuff.

 

Now we're at Z97. 9th series chipset and of course the second 7 for desktop stuff.

 

Here's why Z107 makes sense. 10th chipset and 7 for desktop stuff.

 

Z170 to me makes no sense, at all. It sounds like the stupidest thing ever. 100th series chispet? 

 

(The X series was X38/X48/X58/X79 and X99. If the next one is called X190 then i'm out. Also i imagine the second 9 for X79 and X99 meant it was higher end)

 

Do correct me if i'm wrong in chipset numbers and series.

You could only question the system behind the naming scheme if there would be one :D

Would they be going with 170 to keep it in line with z77? (eg. Z177, H171, B175 etc, I haven't read up on things)

maybe because when you google z107, you get pages of FM radio stations with that name..

IMO, Intel's chipset naming logic went into shambles after Core 2 died off.

sounds like the real reason is because they name things they are WORKING ON accurately, and what they release then is just random gibberish.

It seems to be because this is their "100 Series" chipset line.

After 9, they couldnt exactly go 10-series because then the number would be lower than the current revision (e.g Z17) and would leave no room once they got to the 60-series.

 

Theres the Z170, H170, B150 and probably be the X190 for enthusiast in the Intel 100 Chipset line.

 

Theres probably more to their chipset naming than we're aware of I guess, im sure it makes sense in some way that consumers don't know about :P

I think they shoud name Skylake chipset "Z99"
