It seems to be because this is their "100 Series" chipset line.

After 9, they couldnt exactly go 10-series because then the number would be lower than the current revision (e.g Z17) and would leave no room once they got to the 60-series.

Theres the Z170, H170, B150 and probably be the X190 for enthusiast in the Intel 100 Chipset line.

Theres probably more to their chipset naming than we're aware of I guess, im sure it makes sense in some way that consumers don't know about :P

That makes sense. But they usually put the whole number in. So Z107 instead of Z17.

life is too short to let little insignificant things like this bother you.

go do something productive instead.

Ordered a 980 KPE. Is that different enough?

The socket naming is horrible.

There are 2013 pins, but it can happen that two pins got broken, so it's 2011 to 2013 pins :D

Or it's 2011 ± 3 pins, so basically socket can have from 2008 to 2014 pins (it's up to your luck how many pins you will get) :D

@-iSynthesis

Wow, I didn't expected so complex calculations.
If we move all arrows, one position to right we can see that next gen will be Z0-2

Please correct my calculations if it's wrong. I had to use my fingers to calculate this as my PC does not have enough computational power.

IMO, Intel's chipset naming logic went into shambles after Core 2 died off.

Intel 945, a single chipset used across all motherboards, no matter if it's the sub $50 or $300, all boards uses the same chipset. Now it's H81, H97 B85, Q87, Z87, Z97

Intel Xeon E5 1650 v3 @ 3.5GHz 6C:12T / CM212 Evo / Asus X99 Deluxe / 16GB (4x4GB) DDR4 3000 Trident-Z / Samsung 850 Pro 256GB / Intel 335 240GB / WD Red 2 & 3TB / Antec 850w / RTX 2070 / Win10 Pro x64

HP Envy X360 15: Intel Core i5 8250U @ 1.6GHz 4C:8T / 8GB DDR4 / Intel UHD620 + Nvidia GeForce MX150 4GB / Intel 120GB SSD / Win10 Pro x64

HP Envy x360 BP series Intel 8th gen

AMD ThreadRipper 2!

5820K & 6800K 3-way SLI mobo support list
