This is an absolutely ridiculous statement.

A community is defined as

"a group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common."

"a feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals."

As many others and myself have stated. There may be people who watch almost every video uploaded and frequently visit the forums but do not specifically contribute to the forum itself, which is perfectly fine.

The definition of community doesn't hold the same context online. Especially when you're referring to community platforms. Personally, I think Linus should disable comments on his video's as he posts them here anyways to be discussed. That would get you "YouTubers" off of a video sharing service and into what a community really is. That would also give him full moderation of all community input for that video without having to rely on YouTube services. I could go into depth as to why YouTube is not a community platform. Tho most people who know what a community platform is knows YouTube is far from one.

They could do it by how many likes a user has but the giveaways are not for the forum, just posted there.

I don't think it's wrong but I'm not with it, look at all the youtube channels you look at, if one of them makes a giveaway and it requires you to register in their forum, I want to get in the giveaway but I don't want to be an active member I just want to get in the giveaway and get a chance to win, again I don't agree with it but I don't think it's wrong.

I've started watching LTT in early 2012 I think. The forum was created in beginning of 2013, it took me the whole 6 months until I saw LTT created a forum! (I was thinking, "Ahh this Linus guy seems smart, how can I ask stuff to him?? then I saw the forum")

 

But I am still holding a bit of my opinion. SOmetimes Linus shoud make a Giveaway which are only for active forum members, just a option...

There`s a lot of pepole who just join for the giveaways and make multiple accounts for multiple giveaways..

There should be a rule only one account per household...Just saying I'm ready for criticism

I am a member of niche hobby forum and the place implements a 1 user per IP rule. If you break it, your IP gets banned. Even if you use VPN and you get caught, same thing happens.

 

This should be implemented here on LTT. 

 

It would also be nice to see a community only giveaway (there has been one lately) with certain restrictions such as post quantity and quality. But I'm afraid the LTT staff doesn't have the time to do such giveaways.

I joined for the giveaway today but i will see myselfe using these forums allot. I honestly barely knew of them untill the NUC giveaway, so i think its perfectly fine for people to join once but not many accounts for giveaways and even better if they intend on being active in the community.

Uh.... So your just suppose to share your account with the rest of your family if they also want to use the forums?

Having a min post count would be a good idea. Like good posts. Not complete spam posts. But Blocking out the lurkers would be a bad i think....

 

Also got to think of about how they would do that? Just keep pulling names till you get someone with good posts counts, or have someone from LMG making sure there posts aren't just spam? LMG already has enough to do. Don't want to give them too much more.

@LinusTech said that the giveaways are for both the YouTube viewer community and the forum community. The forum is simply used as a means of conducting the giveaway. I'll admit that I've been on both sides of the field in this debate, but I think that Linus' statement is fair and justified.

How would you tell who has multiple accounts though? You can't tell me not anyone on the forum doesn't have a relative with the same IP who uses the forums. I

Think the post count idea would not be a bad idea, but its gotta be low enough not to block out lurkers, and block out people who are creating accounts just for that, or giveaway moochers.

Hey some (like me) can't wait to watch LTT's latest videos and don't post much, does that mean i shouldn't have a chance to win something? no. Some like to watch the occasional video but post heaps on the forums, does that mean they shouldn't get a chance? no. Both sides are contributing and at the end of the day, isn't that what matters?

They had to watch the video for the giveaway at some point to hear about the giveaway.

And if you think about it only a tiny percent of the total subscribers on YT actually make up the entries. 

 

But there are people that just join for giveaways and reduce everybody else's chance of winning. However, there isn't a way to stop this.

Even if it seems unfair it is a community giveaway, not a forum giveaway. Some people may be using only for the stuff, but some people come from just watching the videos. It would be unfair to just exclude them because we said so. Fighting over it is not worth it.

Absolutely will not happen - if it does I will certainly walk out as staff as will many others - people share internet connections at home, at school/university and in the workplace. Banning people because someone else on the same connection uses this forum would be ludicrous. It may work on a small forum of sub 100 members however on something 170K members, it will not work.

Alright good point. That forum I was referring to was nowhere near as huge as LTT. Its a niche hobby and there were only like a little over a hundred active and staying members.
