Controversial shooter Hatred goes to Greenlight UPDATE: Its been removed!

XTankSlayerX

I wonder if we can just compress the whole "controversy" down to "Some people cannot distinguish between reality and fiction", I seriously do.

Yes sir, before really thinking about whether fiction impacts reality at all, they've already gone and extrapolated the degree to which it apparently does.

This game reminds me a lot of a game called Smash TV, one of my favorite NES games. In that game, you are in a TV show where the goal is to kill hoards of people and then advance to the next room. You collect more powerful weapons and money along the way. The difference between Hatred and Smash TV is essentially just ~20 years worth of graphical improvements. I doubt people would be outraged over Smash TV being released today so clearly it's not the concept of murdering hoards of people that are making people upset.

I am very disappointed in Valve. I thought Greenlight was suppose to be a voting system where everyone's vote were equally worth. I would like to see how many complained about the game versus the number of people who wanted the game on Steam. It would be interesting to see how much one person whining is worth in the eyes of Valve, because I doubt more people where complaining than the people who wanted it on there.

If it really were more people complaining than people voting for it then sure, it should have been removed.

Who needs Jack Thompson when we've fostered a culture where people are overly politically correct and honestly believe that their sensibilities and feelings are above others and above freedom of speech or freedom of expression.
I was disgusted to see how many GAMERS were using a slippery slope argument with video game/real life violence.

It's really sad but true. SJW has successfully infected the gaming world. Let's just be thankful it happened now and not 10 years ago because if it did then we wouldn't have successful franchises like GTA. Now those franchises are too big to be taken down by simple "I don't like it so therefore nobody should enjoy it".

You could say the same thing about basically any game that involves shooting people. Who would want to play GTA unless they're fucked up? Who would want to play BF4 unless they're fucked up? Well I got an answer to that question, lots of people. People play games because they are not reality.

Enemies in Smash TV weren't really humans. They were robot\cyborgs and weird mutants. Whereas in this game they are actually people.

I'm surprised Valve took action, they usually don't give crap. Perhaps they were afraid of a large media frenzy that would disturb the market. Personally I think Jack shit would happen.

Although I'm not a fan of the game I feel that is wrong to not allow it on Steam.

As said there is much worse content and media, in films, books and other games (Far Cry, BF, COD, you name it), and for that media, if I feel like it will upset me or gross me out, like the human centipede or other stuff like that, then I simply will not watch it. I think that it might be a bit of a sickening game, but that is not a good ground to ban it on.

Ofc it would be different if in game they would actually promote you to mass murder irl, but they don't, its a game.

And for those that don't know the difference between fiction, be that games or movies, they should just be put away since any piece of media can influence them in the wrong way.

I don't understand why everyone is so upset over this game. Isn't Grand Theft Auto the EXACT sort of game? I mean, look at GTA 1 & 2, those were both top-down, mass murder games like this, so how is that any different?

People are too damn sensitive now-a-days. If you don't like a game, then don't buy! Stop ruining all the fun for people who KNOW it's a god damn game.

Funny, just how none of you seem to get it.

I can barely read half of these comments because the ridiculousness gives me headaches.

Even Totalbiscuit's video is completely misunderstanding to any other view and/or opinion other than his own.

I don't really know much about this game, but i don't think there's that big of a issue. We will always have that one giy who takes to video games before he takes them to the real world. Can't wait for all the Ruckus (R700 AP) about this game when it drops

UPDATE: Haha, knew it, i was wondering if valve would remove it or not. Regardless the game is till going to sell. Even if they put it up on their own website. All the PR its been getting has only made this game bigger.

No respectable company is going to associate itself with a game that can and will be construed as promoting "hate".  Violence by itself it completely different.  Not surprised it was removed.

Right, we're just saying that for example, we respect the fact that you dislike it but we should not deny it's right to exist. You're just saying because you don't want it you want nobody to have it. To hold that opinion, you must henceforth hold your own moral values as absolute and beyond question, which is one of the most arrogant and narrow minded positions one can hold sir.

Nihilistic, wait what? There are many other worse, brainwash, imposing shit out there and this is bringing this much attention? It's just deterring attention from true crap people should stand up for. Those people turning over to games like this or in general are just attention whores for media and self profit goals. And there are those that are just scared or insecured about it cause of some outside prics so they don't want to be involved on any way, like publish it etc.

Nothing better than calling everyone stupid without giving a reason for it.

I just really can't be bothered responding to everyone's comments, replies however, I'm more than happy too.

I'm not saying this game shouldn't exist. As much as I doubt it has a reason to be here I'm not going to explicitly state that it has a reason NOT to be here, alrighty?

Check.

However, I hold strong to the idea that Steam and Valve have the right to remove whatever game they like from Greenlight and have absolutely no legal reason to justify it and oly have a moral obligation to it's consumer base as to reason it's decisions, of which I'm sure we can all collectively come to a single agreement in that they didn't want to sell a game of this nature, that much does not need to be specified.

In Totalbiscuit's video and in many others, this has been compared to the Target situation over their choosing to drop GTAV from it's shelves, in both of these situations my stance is the same.

Okay, so if you want to play the game? Fine, go onto their site, buy it there and play it, it DOESN'T NEED TO BE ON STEAM FOR YOU TO PLAY IT. Same with the whole Target scenario, people could easily have bought the game elsewhere, but instead they chose to whine.

Y'know what's more of an issue than a game being pulled off shelves? If the version we get is censored. Pulling a game off a shelf isn't censoring it, it's not saying "Hey you can't play this", it's saying "Hey we don't want to sell this", so the whole "adults can make decisions for themselves" argument is inane and I loathe every time the Biscuit brings it up because despite how thoughtful he likes to make himself come across, it's a childish argument that's flawed and has no reason to be brought up.

If you're an 'adult who can make their own decisions' then you're also an 'adult capable of finding a game that you want to play if it's not available in or on whatever'.

In regards to the games right of existence, well, personally I believe it shouldn't. As a collective I felt that we should have all banded together and branded the game as needlessly sociopathic.

After Biscuit's video went out, he tweeted this:

"I heard about this awful game that lets you murder civilians in an airport. I want it banned from Steam. It's called Modern Warfare 2"

A comment a lot of people brought up when the trailer for Hatred was originally released. From people engaging in discussions to news articles and popular coverage videos on youtube.

This is a ridiculous comment to make in this situation, because it cuts out everything related to the event, situation, narrative, reasoning.

In MW2, you're never told to kill people, as a player. Maybe your character was, I don't remember, but explicitly as a player you were never instructed to kill innocent people.

Narrative-wise, you're an under-cover soldier, or something to that effect, you're working with bad, horrible people who this action is completely within the logical bounds for. You're trying to pretend you're one of them, in other words, reasoning grounded in narrative.

Hatred? You basically kill people because you're a cunt. No reason other-wise.

Now, you may say, but what about GTAV? And I'd reply, "Well, what about GTAV?"

In discussions I've had in real life, I've brought up the idea of why we as gamers do what we do in games. Why do we do what a game tells us to do?

There's this urge of completion, competition, scoring and winning that's permeated into our brains, it's a psychological nature within gamers to complete a game's activities, to engage the gameplay and to win.

There's this almost arcade notion, and it's what separates gaming from other forms of media, it's a lot more active and engaging. In GTA, you get stars and cops chase you, you see how long you hold out, it's an activity, it's fun, it's competition.

You don't so much as see the models in games as actual people but more as targets, video game targets that you shoot and you get points.

Hatred? A lot more close, a lot more personal. It's psychotic and pathological.

Hatred stands closer to the line of "this is a bit too much" for a video game in comparison to GTAV, whilst GTAV may not be a holy game fit for children, it sits in a better position than Hatred does, for sure.

This game is the equivalent of torture porn in movies, or harrowing death metal in music, if you want to listen and watch that stuff, fine, but don't expect it to be available in your major retailers. I don't care if "Steam is a digital store aimed for adults", there's still a point where they can say no and they have. If anything, people complaining about that just show how pathetic those people are.

Also, from here on out, hopefully you people will stop using Totalbiscuit in your arguments.

I thought the dude was well thought out and analytical, but he's no different from all of the other shit-posting youtubers who doesn't care for criticism, shutting out the opinions of anyone that don't sync with his own.

He's effectively a kid who's just putting fingers in his ears and shouting that we're all morons even when we've got perfectly reasoned and thought out points.

Also, don't do the same stupid thing he's doing, where he's trying to bring up out of context situations in other games in attempt to justify hatred.

TB: "Can we ban this sickening cop-killing game Counterstrike?"

ME: """Oh I'm going to bring up different examples despite varying situations and circumstances as an attempt to prove my point.""

TB: "I heard about this awful game that lets you murder civilians in an airport. I want it banned from Steam. It's called Modern Warfare 2" (Also, I just want to point out something he completely missed too, is that the key word here is "lets you", it's not the objective at all.")

ME: "I know you don't read these, but that mission wasn't glorified, it was tragic and also had a place within the narrative, it wasn't just, "hey go in and enjoy killing all these running and screaming people who are innocent". Use your head, mate.."

And then in response he'll say something like this:

TB: "Everytime I put finger to key I imagine 100 people preparing to say "well actually..." :P"

ME: "Almost as if there's more than one opinion, one view and one understanding?"

I can't agree with part that in any way. If they don't want it being sold via their services they obviously must have a reason, unless its "just because" which is complete bullshit. Not only that, but because they're perfectly fine selling similar games. And just to add, the only reason why some of us think it was wrong for target au to remove gta 5 is because its most likely a knee-jerk reaction to a petition that was based solely on wrong facts.

I disagree... Sure you can go on a homicidal killing spree in GTA but its not the main goal of the game... I for one stopped playing the story after the first mission and just went around exploring - doing stunts and shit.

And BF4 is more comparable to something like a paintball or softair match imo... its armed soldiers fighting armed soldiers - its a tournament - not some maniac going around killing people who are begging for mercy for no good reason exept that he hates humanity or whatever... That dumb game is like the deranged powerfantasy of some basement dwelling maniac.

But thats just my opinion feel free to tell me why im wrong...

n*gga dass a lotta text

"This game is the equivalent of torture porn in movies, or harrowing death metal in music, if you want to listen and watch that stuff, fine, but don't expect it to be available in your major retailers."

Top muddafukkin KEK. Lol what, how do you think that's a valid comparison? Manhunt is the equivalent of a snuff film and it's available in major retailers, in Steam.

"In GTA, you get stars and cops chase you, you see how long you hold out, it's an activity, it's fun, it's competition."

But it seems it's the same premise here, you go out shoot a bunch of people then police and eventually SWAT or whoever else comes after you, what's one of the best ways to get high stars in GTA 5? Shooting civilians and cops.

You're trying to be the fucking moral police and you don't even realize your own hypocrisy.

You don't like it so you demonize and insult those who might and you support it being prevented from being sold.

TB made a valid point, Steam is what comes to mind whenever you talk about PC Gaming, they are THE staple selling platform, and if your game isn't there, you will suffer greatly.

"I've brought up the idea of why we as gamers do what we do in games. Why do we do what a game tells us to do?"

What? Most people, at least in sandbox games will try to do whatever the fuck they can to have fun, i'll do whatever the game allows me to do, within its coded limits, for fun. Why do you think you can kill innocent people in GTA 5? Because it's fun, they didn't have to make the deaths and reactions so realistic, peds could just be bullet proof but as soon as you touch them the police appears.

Your post was a long bunch of shitty argumentation and rambling, it all comes down to you not liking the game so you're totally fine with Steam censoring it on their platform. Yep it's their platform, they can do whatever they want, doesn't mean they should. If that's how it is i'm hoping to see some AAA games being denied in the near future as well.

"In regards to the games right of existence, well, personally I believe it shouldn't. As a collective I felt that we should have all banded together and branded the game as needlessly sociopathic."

Piss off with your stupid opinion, the game doesn't promote you to go out and murder people, the game doesn't recreate any real events, the game doesn't contain any representations of victims or perpetrators. The game is just as sociopathic as any other shooter, you have a double standard.

Your opinion is not an argument. Fucking distinguish the real world from polygons.

As a collective we should support censorship because you don't like what you see.

Do you even know what a fucking collective is? What makes our "collective" is the shared interest in video games, that's it. Stop trying to fucking attach politics to it.

I mean seriously, just fuck off if that's the kind of thinking you're promoting.

Hey man i'm just using your standards, if the people who enjoy Hatred are some sort of psychopaths, then you get labeled the same way for liking Hotline Miami.

Yes it's damn sarcasm. Both games are more or less equally violent in similar contexts, you happen to dislike Hatred personally so you're demonizing it without realizing that you're judging yourself at the same time.

The tu quoque is getting strong..

The only argument for demonizing this game is simply personal feelings, nobody is telling anyone to love the game, but you should respect its fucking right to exist and to be sold.

I keep pointing out their hypocrisy because they keep ignoring it, their argument is "in this game you go around killing civilians so it's bad/nasty/whatever else and deserves to be censored", but if that's how we're to act then please, ban every other fucking violent game that has same/similar content.

The game does what every other shooter has done, they just replaced the enemies with some fucking civilians, but you still shoot and kill cops, both things that are present in many other games.

If they replaced all the fucking civies and policemen with stupid zombies that grunted, there wouldn't be a single issue. They could have taken any of those execution animations, swapped the model and sounds, and everyone would be shouting how fucking awesome it was.

You can't commit a fucking fallacy when the other person is making arguments out of emotion, and their way of thinking leads to an actual slippery slope.

But after making its way on to Steam Greenlight, Valve has taken swift action to remove the title and end voting, ensuring the game will not go on sale on its store.

Valve has moved to quickly remove controversial game Hatred from Steam Greenlight following its arrival on the community voting platform earlier today. The title, developed by Polish studio Destructive Creations, pits players in the role of a mass murderer who slaughters policemen and innocent civilians.

"Even though games like Manhunt or Postal are still available on Steam we of course fully respect Valve's decision, as they have the right to do so," reads an excerpt of the email. "

The community wanted this game. It received thousand and thousands of "Yes" votes WITHIN HOURS of being posted.

So many in fact, that it was the #7 ranked game overall with 93% yes vote..
