gizmo_2-640x0.jpg

AMD is backing Gizmo 2 conceived by nonprofit development board community GizmoSphere. It’s meant to be used as a testing ground for new technologies and inventions.

Use cases include network-connected media players, home automation systems, and Bitcoin miners.

Compared to the Raspberry Pi, the Gizmo 2 is a powerhouse.

Specs-

1 Ghz Dual-Core AMD G-Series Processor.

AMD Radeon HD 8210E Graphics.

1 GB DDR3 RAM.

9 W Power Consumption.

Supports Windows 7 / Windows 8 / Linux.

HDMI Port.

Gigabit Ethernet Connector.

A microSD card slot.

4 USB Ports.

Raspberry Pi Model B+ is available for $35. Low-end Pi for $20, the Gizmo 2 costs ten times as much. It will run you $200.

not really a competitor in my book considering the price difference.

Depends on how you look at it, the Pi offers less than 25 GFlops while the Gizmo 2 offers 85 GFlops of performance. The Gizmo 2 also runs x86 architecture, so it's so much easier to develop software for as you can do it via any common desktop compiler. Tho I will agree that it is kind of expensive, if they dropped it down to $99 it would be solid buy. This would be quite a buy for a HTPC, as the iGPU has 80 SPU's so it's plenty for 1080p video.

there really is no point in quoting gflops when comparing the Pi's hardware to anything.

That's pretty pathetic in terms of pricing. It's cool an all since it so tiny, but literally crazy expensive for what it is

My build here could be made cheaper if your okay with not very good rating stuff , like random cheap ram vs G skills or less hard drive space or A shifty case or Even a not 80+ bronze power supply.

It has much higher powerconsumption and also costs a lot more, not really a direct competator for the Pi. What was that Intel NUC thingy? Maybe it is competition for that one (would make sense considering it is backed by AMD)

there really is no point in quoting gflops when comparing the Pi's hardware to anything.

There is, you're limited to what you can do with the Pi due to it's extremely weak hardware. This is essentially no bigger than two Pi's side by side meanwhile offering three times the performance (you can passive cool this as well for no noise). Sure it can't compete on a price level, tho most of us who develop software for devices like these could care less about that. I would love to custom tailor a box to crate one of these and write my own media interface for it. On top of all of that it packs a pretty beastly iGPU, which should be capable enough of playing games like Battlefield 2. You can make one hell of a little gaming and media box out of this, tho like said I wish it was priced a little lower.

I would rather sacrifice the form factor and build one of AMD's AM1 APU's for a similar price point as it would be more capable in a game. I have no opinion on the development as I don't do that, I was only saying that because everyone knows that a Pi is weaksauce so comparing it to something that isn't a cellphone seems like a waste of time since pretty much anything would be faster.

Indeed, tho I think we would have to compare it to the Pi simply based on form factor (primary goal of this device). As this thing isn't that much bigger than the Pi (4" x 4"). Essentially this thing when enclosed should be smaller than a standard home router. In which case this device also can serve a purpose as (hardware firewall). The price isn't the greatest but it shares the same general concept as the Pi, to drive as much hardware as you can into a super small device. What you aren't paying for here is the super fast hardware and uber specifications, you're generally paying for the form factor. Sure you can build a stronger HTPC for the same price, tho it will result in a box easily ten times as big (with noise).

If this is 85 GFlops and the Pi is 25 GFlops then...

that make me appreciate the my pi much more. The price per GFlop is crazy

This is retarded considering Intel released their compute stick with better specs for less money. the only thing that it doesnt have is GbE...

It's probably in input, not an output

EDIT: maybe. I just saw that part :P

Theres a pci 1x slot does that mean we can use it in our Pc's to help with work load?

thats only for power :) there are also 1150 boards that plug into prci slots and a 8pin connector for dense compute farms
