Well why would it be so important to reduce the die size to 14 nm ? i mean sure you can fit more in less space but does it really matter ? in a desktop you could fit a pretty HUGE cpu right ? (2011-3) of course maybe the expenses of raw materials used would increase the cost of a cpu :/ It is something that i would really like to get an answer from our intel expert for the haswell-E .. why is the socket so huuuuge ? and the cpu too

My question for Alejandro Hoyos, Product Marketing Engineer at Intel, is

Would calling the new Haswell-E 5960x proccesor a rebranded "tweeked" version of an existing Xeon Chip thats already been around for 2-3 years be accurate? Rebranding the commercial sector to appeal to the consumer market?

Regardless of the reality behind the development of the new X99 Haswell-E chips I will be buying a Haswell-E 5930k for my Micro ATX X99 build. I have the build posted in the Build Logs thread :D!!!!!!

Best regards,

Joe Pelikan

Question: How flexible is the PCIe lane configuration on the 5820K?

Specificallly, the EVGA X99 Micro uses a x16 / x8 / x4 layout with the 5820K but I think a x16 / x4 / x8 layout would be ideal for running SLI in 5-slot cases. The cards can go in the top and bottom slots leaving the middle one open for a sound card/ PCIe SSD/ etc. and give the top card room to breathe.

Jacob from EVGA said on the PC Perspective interview that the lane configuration is hardwired and can't be changed with a BIOS update or anything.

Could a motherboard be made that can switch between either layout or is it one or the other?

My question is: Any chance there will be a Devils Canyon for the X99 platform? Thanks in advance.

isnt that just like asking ive there will be a 290X in the R7 lineup?

Devils canyon is 1150 hasswell(refresh) only AFAIK

you no fun, what's stopping them to do a refresh on haswell e? They did something similar with sandy e

but that wont be devils canyon, that would have a diferent code name then

seeing as devils canyon was an improvement to the thermal conductivity between the spreader and the die I doubt it as the Haswell-E dies are already soldered on and that is better than thermal pastes.

I'm pretty positive he was asking about a refresh to similar effect to devils canyon.

It did happen, it is not archived though for whatever reason.

EDIT*

Oh wait, I'm thinking of a different Intel tech chat, my mistake.  Disregard above comments.
