I had some fun at the scammer's expense.

Also, Carey has the same phone as me, I think. :o

I have met older people who have been scammed like this. One lady had 3 credit cards billed because they kept saying "try another one because the last one didn't go through"

It's really sad to see this happen.

The scammer actually stays online and chats with him. He knew he was fucked. He did get a little feisty at the end, wishing him good luck. But he knows he is screwed.

I'm sorry, but you have to be really daft to not be suspicious of a random thick Indian accent calling claiming they are from Microsoft. Let alone giving access.

Once our generation becomes the elderly one, scammers are going to have a hell of a hard time trying to be convincing as we would know better. Oh, right..the generation before mine is dumb..we're doomed.

If you actually did get Microsoft to do remote desktop support they may actually legitimately charge for it. But yeah they will NEVER reach out to you (And how could you trust that it was actually them even if they did?)

@Mooshi you're being unreasonably hard on people who aren't tech enthusiasts. Especially older generations. Most of the older generations don't know how computers work at all. How are they supposed to know that this is a scamming practice and not just a regular "check up", like a Dentist might call to see how you're doing? We can only try to teach them that this is a scam.

Just remember that most people never grew up with computers, so they have a totally different perspective from the younger generations who innately know things because they've been immersed in computer technology their entire lives. Also everyone says that the generation before (or after) theirs is dumb. They aren't. Your generation isn't dumb. No generation is "dumb". That's an idiotic statement with no factual evidence behind it.

Although you do have one solid point in that in say 15 to 30 years, this scamming practice will be much harder to pull off, as most people will now be part of the generations in which computers have been a household item most or all of their lives. But by that point, the scammers will have thought of something totally new no doubt.

It should still occur to someone, regardless of age, that a random unprompted call concerning their system that was most likely perfectly fine to question it. It'd be as if someone on the street made some BS they are a wallet inspector. Surely someone would easily be suspicious of such a thing. Randomly calling someone to gain access to their system is ridiculously suspicious. You don't have to be a techie not to think so. I can understand the elderly being taken advantage of, but for the majority such a call should raise red flags right away.

Thing is, that generation doesn't know what's normal. They probably wouldn't even notice if their computer was a slow piece of malware ridden shit, compared to when it was brand new. Case in point, if you've ever done PC Repair work, how many toolbars are in the average random persons browser? And I'm not even just talking about the elderly (though they are certainly the worst offenders on average), but I'm talking your regular joe computer. You can often find 2, 5, even upwards of 10+ browser toolbars, and when you ask them about it, they just shrug and have no idea that was bad.

Your comparison to a "wallet inspector" is an extreme example that I don't think really illustrates things correctly. It would be more like if someone waved you down while you're stopped at a red light and convinced you that some "noise" in your car meant that it was broken. The average person wouldn't know the difference. And yeah, obviously, most people will be like "Oh okay I'll take it to my mechanic", but if the scammer in this situation is charismatic enough, they could convince the person that the car is damaged and that they can "quickly fix it" for the person for a small fee.

The thing is that PC scamming, even among the elderly, is still incredibly rare. It's not like every old person will fall for it. Just like not every person would fall for that scenario I described.

I love when they call. The last time they called me it was saying that i had viruses on my computer. I said to them that there where none on my computer about 5 or 6 times. The girl kept saying trust me their is a lot of viruses on your computer. So i went right f**k it and said to her that if she knows that i apparently have viruses on my computer what is the make and model of my system. She came back saying that it was a Dell Optiplex. I started laughing down the phone to her, then she started to get in a tizzy and asked why i was laughing so i just went your wrong and hung up.

Taking the piss out of them is the best thing ever. Its almost as fun as going to stores that claim to specialise in computing and making fun of their staff.

I've only had one. I just promptly hung up on them after they said "Hi we're from microsoft blah blah etc", and I just said "No you're not" and hung up.

I just want to ask them to "hold on a second" then put the phone down and come back 5 hours later to see if they're still there.

Haha yes that'd be nice indeed. Especially if they call your land line, since then the incoming call wouldn't cost you anything :P Though in reality they'd just hang up after a couple minutes.
