I personally find it really annoying that you can't make personal backups of DVDs because of pirates.

All you need to copy the movie is a capture card. Any Nvidia GPU these days will do it fine. You probably would want to have a separate audio recording software because the sound comes out weird from shadowplay.

Don't blame pirates for the awful DRM companies add to their products. Blame the DRM companies.

this is pretty much the only legit reason I've heard for adblock

Here comes a few more (in my opinion):

  • Makes it hard to navigate certain websites (for example there are 3 different download buttons).

  • It removes annoying ads (remember the "SAY SOMETHING!" ad? There are ads that are almost as annoying as that one still out there).

  • Saves bandwidth as that other guy said, and also processing power.

  • Protects from malware (and it's more likely than you think to get malware from an ad).

  • Sometimes X rated ads shows up on non-x rated websites (A mild example of this would be LTT where I often get ads showing Asian women with very little clothes on, but on some sites it's full blown porn ads even though the site itself is safe for work. This is especially bad for younger people).

When it comes down to basics , it's just plain politics , both sides have a valid point , so strong that no one is going to win the argument,  so just comes back to numbers, plain & simple ,there will always be shit throwing from both sides saying that they smell nicer than the other but in the end y'all know what smells most.

As far on topic: Valid point being : it does damage to the content creator(if it's their only option of financing), but it's the consumers choice whether to accept the extra weight when they buy just one bag, as a consumer who is lured in for the info doesn't need to be

For Example: Everyone wants a race car they want the speed, they want the control ,they want the safety, they want the solid build, but i can pretty much damn guarentee not everyone don't want their cars to be covered in sponsor stickers from the manufacturer., But (since youre driving in a free car you ought to, right?) yeah! it gets more confusing the more you go deep into things.

in translation & conclusion : website means a puddle of information, consumers want information(data) ie: targeted data ,something that they are specifically looking for, but when it(content creator) offers consumers alternatives along with that, it's the consumers choice whether to accept it or not, no matter how harsh it sounds , either side shouldn't force the other one, hey , you can put in ads, we're not saying you should never do it, you can, same goes for you don't force us to watch them. period. (read my first paragraph now)

Details separate people.

I think it's time I put my thoughts in this thread.

I use AdBlock sometimes, but I'm beginning to want to use it on this forum because of how stupid the ads are. Seriously. 80% of the ads I see on here is shit like "There are single women in your area" and countless advertisements for dating websites. I don't want these fucking scummy piece-of-shit ads. I wish they would go, they really do degrade my experience on this forum.

But, of course, Linus can't choose what ads appear on the forum. If it was tech-related advertisements, from Intel and Corsair, etc...I'd be happy. It's targeted at me, and that's all that matters.

just so you know, you can click on an add an say you don't want to see similar adds for x reason, being inappropriate irrelevant etc.. they do actually want to bring you relevant adds.

It isn't the users job to do the advertising companies research.

next you want us to pay for the ad's to be made (sarcasm)

Lots of valid opinions definitely.

But I honestly have to say that I didn't really feel offended.

I agree that it was poorly worded on the show, but the point is right.

I use the service like most of you, does that make me a terrible person? Of course not.

The real question is, am I conscious that I am voluntary damaging someone that is providing me with a service that I enjoy?

The whole debate can lose a lot of heat when you see it under this prospective.

You might have the best reason in the world to use ADblock, your little sister, your mom, whatever.

But ultimately you have to be aware of the consequences of your actions, because something good for you can always be something bad for someone else.

Perhaps when you put yourself in someone else shoes you are more inclined to accept a bit of criticism.

No people who use adblock arent taking money out of his pocket. That is the same argument that big companies use for piracy. The money never went to him, therefor the person using adblock is not "Taking money from him" he never had the money. Don't use stupid arguments that don't make any cents(haha get the pun).

The money is going to him? What do you mean it was never going to him?

Ehhh its just because he gets his money via the ads. I think that if he did not get his money through ads and such that he prolly wouldn't care. Of course he cares, he needs tha monies!

I understand why he says that. Ads are his biggest source of revenue. Is it really so much to ask seeing an ad on the side of the page if you know it'll help contribute to the person who makes quality content for you? It's rather selfish.

But the way Linus worded it is rather off putting. Maybe he could've asked them to refrain from using ad blockers instead and reason with them. Asking nicely, especially towards people who don't know, would usually be met with a positive response, compared to reprimanding them and throwing them a shade. First impressions last, and he might even lose a few subscribers from throwing a shade like that. He should remember that he has no leverage on these people, unlike say someone in a managerial position. Even then, in a position with leverage, you don't just go around telling your people off unless you're sure that that person responds well to negative reinforcement.

I'd rather not watch YouTube than watch YouTube with ads.

If Linus has a problem with that, then consider that an unsubscribe from me.

I don't use adblock. I have a modified HOSTS file that lists almost every single spam website (ads, malware, etc) known. Thus, my HOSTS file is massive (almost 200K). I haven't seen an ad on youtube in...years. Web pages load *so* fast. It's wonderful. I have never bought something because I saw it in an advertisement. If someone wants to believe I'm the scum of the earth for improving my quality of life at no cost to their own (you weren't going to make any money from me because I was NOT going to click on anything) then ~omitted insult about ignorance~.

I work in an engineering lab. We stress test enterprise gear, whereas Linus stress tests consumer grade gear. I find Linus's more recent videos insulting to my intelligence. "SSDs are better than hard drives!" ... you cloned a hard drive that was 5 years old onto a brand new SSD. No no no. Burn that SSD over and over for 5 years with that same workload, and compare *that* broken image to a new SSD. That's apples to apples. Of course a new SSD will beat a 5 year old hard drive. >.< The point, Linus, was to show that SSDs *do* get slower with time, a lot slower.

There was another video...I forget what it was about, but it was in that same strand. "Here's an apples to apples comparison...!" and it wasn't. Not even close. Cmon Linus, I liked your earlier videos, like about the Corsair 750D, because they told me things I didn't know and couldn't have found out easily on my own. Go back to being useful.

maybe he's right then,  especially you can't handle 5 seconds of an ad to help fund the content but still want the content.

I just wanted to point out that Jhen is a gold  contributor ... no ads will ever equal that kind of contribution. I think you should slow down on accusing him of wanting to watch content while not funding it ... It takes a shit load of ads to equal 25$ when most ads on twich are like giving 20$ (or less) to the creator for 1000 ads viewed. He would make more money out of a sub button or something similar (2.50$ out of 5$ per month).

I apologize if you wrote something else different after page 5 but so far its only whining and stuff that I read so Im gonna leave this thread with this post in hope it gets people thinking how much ads are worth.

Edit : wow 27 pages ... Ill try to read it all but I doubt ill be able to.

I use Adblock but I have added sites that I enjoy using (inc youtube) to my exceptions. Quite frankly I don't want to see a few hundred redirect, page-filler or 'follow-me' ads on every website I visit. If your adverts are intrusive blocked, if they do not affect my experience on the website leave them be.

Ya I just thought of if you dont think of YT like say I am on the PB downloading something, those ads on everywhere for russians girls and every hyperlink you click bring up a new add is wayyy annoying. I just love going to a site where there is not that much clutter at all and I dont get a seizure seeing tons of stuff blink.

I see this thread is still going. Read the first few pages.

The word scummy was ill-chosen.

But the simple fact ramains that if everyone blocked the ads in my content Linus Tech Tips wouldn't exist. Period.

Those suggesting that I complain to Google... Do you think I can just call up Eric Schmidt and let him know I don't like the way they implement ads on YouTube? I laughed out loud.

YouTube isn't perfect but it's my best shot at running a viable business here so I can pay my employees and feed my family, so that's what I use. Those of you who opt to consume the content without supporting it, fine you're not "scummy". Come up with your own word for it ;)

Linus is not a fan Hater he just miscommunicates What ever may be i can understand How he feels

The way I see it is in one way or another, you should try to give back to the content creator and the community at large in one way or another.  Whether it's watching the ads or becoming a paid contributor, try to give something back.

I use adblock, and I have no plans to stop, but I am a contributor (both here and Tek Syndicate) and I try to give back to the community in non-monetary ways when I can.  I know it's not a huge contribution, but it's probably more than you'd make off of my ad impressions anyways.

I don't mind the ads on the site that I usually visit. I mean, maybe if it wasn't for the ads, YoutUbe wouldn't be free and the content creators would not be paid for the good amount of content they create.

For so many years, we had to put up with the Cables company overcharging for a shitty service, charging us for 5000 channels, when all I wanted to see was sports. And not only they overcharged us, but then they fill up the content we already paid to see with ads. And I don't mean a 30 second skipeable Ad like YouTube. When watching a show, we have to put up with two or three minutes of ads, and be aware to change the channel fast so we wouldn't miss a second of our favorite show, and now people complain because of a 20-30 second ad, that gets some money to your favourite content creator, to whom you suscribed voluntarily, and got charged 0 dollars for doing so?

Don't get it.

Knowledge don't take space. Don't know something? Just ask nicely!

But should people be making a living off of this ("this" being ads)? I think not.

My point (as seen a few pages back) is that YouTube should be seen as a hobby, not a business.

Simply because it's inherently free. You don't pay to watch videos nor to upload them. Google just decided to share some of its earnings with Youtubers to keep the platform growing and attract even more interest from companies that want to advertise.

If your business/main product is content creation/videos (I am looking at you Linus!) I would expect you to actually sell them and not to just rely on ad revenue.

If your business is retail and you use YouTube as a way to make your store and its products known, you don't have a problem in the first place.

In conclusion: prevent ads => no revenue => paid content. Which I think is a better option.

Ads are, in my opinion, one of the worst things that happened to the world anyway.

Companies waste all their money in (sometimes excruciatingly bad) ads instead of focusing on the product and content creators, whose work is sometimes completely pointless, benefit from this because people without adblock consume their content as entertainment because it's freely available.

And then we end up with surgeons making 300,000$ and let's players making 4M$.

On the other hand, without ads, one could (maybe) theorize that surgeons would continue making 300,000$, LMG would still have paying subscribers that value his work and want to stay informed about the latest tech news and let's players would have an actual job because ain't nobody got money to pay to watch someone playing games and scream at the screen (they would much rather pay to play the actual game, perhaps, or maybe they see value in that and will also subscribe, which is fine). And companies would be "stuck" with using that money to reinvest on their products (oh noes!) or give to charity.

I know that it is not black and white like I made it sound. The ad industry is so pervasive that it would have many implications that I am not contemplating. At this point it feels more like an utopia.

And ads or no ads, there would still be a lot of disparity in income levels between essential and not-so-essential jobs.

Essentially, like Professor Farnsworth once said (and the reason for my avatar): "I don't want to live on this planet anymore".

TotalBiscuit makes a living, largely off of youtube ads. Plenty of people are using the ads alone.

This line of argument makes no sense. It's inherently free in that it requires no money from the viewer, but that doesn't make it not a business. Take radio or freely broadcasted TV for example. Those are free and a business.

Your argument relies on paid content being a universally superior delivery model for all youtube content that is currently paid.

This would mean you would no longer have reviews of anything, since people use reviews to determing how to spend their money, and people don't spend their money to determine how to spend their money.

It's not like these people are going to produce reviews for free at the current rate and quality you see. Before it was possible to make money, you had hobbyists doing one or two videos a month at most; that doesn't cut it for reviews.

channels like LMG would just die out as a paid content model.
