HP's "Fanless" Chromebox isn't really "Fanless" at all

TechPowerUp reported, HP is now under fire for falsely marketing, when their "Fanless" chomebox desktop was discovered isn't "Fanless" at all...

HP is alleged to be falsely marketing its Chromebox desktop as "fanless." The company in its marketing material (pictured below), describes its Chromebox as being "silent, quiet, and efficient," and "dust-free" due to its "fanless design." When tested by YouTube-based hardware reviewer Lyon Siedman, he noticed a hum and vibration caused only by the presence of a fan. When sifting through HP's very own disassembly guide (PDF), you'll find a picture that reveals its fan-heatsink, used to cool the 17W TDP CPU. Since when is "fanless" a figure of speech like "silent?"

HP, incase you haven't noticed" fanless" means fanless. Not fanless, "oh and by the way there is one very small fan. But we thought that wouldn't count as a fan". Oh well. It just goes to show that you can't really trust what you read. ;)

I think by Fanless they predicted that it will have no fans. (Get it ? Like.. you know.. People who actually are excited for their product ... Fan .. )

Except they charge you a $10 premium over the ASUS model specifically on their "fanless" claim. They also specifically advertise that they design is superior because with no fan it will never suck any dust into the system.

It's a Chromebox, barely more powerful than a smartphone. Passive cooling could work if it was a bit bigger.

I believe you will find it is called an air extractor ,not a fan, due to the fact it is extracting air from the case. It is quite clearly stated in the product small print that the air extractor is not a fan, but a fully passive blade that spins up by air currents, not a motor.
