"...Remember that before I hire anybody, I always check out everything that they've been doing online and believe me, we have ways of finding out everything you've been doing online."

It really is disturbing how it's passed off as a joke, "..That was actually funnier than I intended that to be."

I'd say that was more nervous laughter on the audiences behalf, this is seriously *cringe* worthy. Eugh.

Yes, but employers typically don't have ties to the NSA.

My PC specifications are in my profile.

Yep. Like those idiot Bruins fans Tweeting racist garbage. If I'm an employer, I wouldn't hire an idiot who exposes himself like that it cyberspace. An employer who doesn't research potential employees is a fool. You're not interested in the candidate's sexual proclivities (unless it's illegal), but his PUBLIC comments reveal a lot about him/ her.

This is also a slippery slope. It's become standard practice for employers to troll through the internet looking for information about potential employees. What happens when they can't find anything?

I have a separate email for Job applications, I have no presence on-line under my own name. As far as the internet goes, I do not exist.

Given how normalized social media has become, I actually think it's becoming a disadvantage to not be fully transparent about your PRIVATE life. Would a company that can't find any presence of yours on-line, think that you are 'smart enough to value privacy' or would they think 'this guy is an unknown / has something to hide'.

You won't find much about me either, and I've not had difficulty finding work. Professional references help (that's what Linked In is for). An employer can't reasonably condemn a potential employee if nothing surfaces on the internet, unless the job requires a very active social media candidate. In which case, it would be a mark against you if you're not on FB, Twitter, etc.

Doing research through publicly available information on a private individual isn't the same as spying. I don't think many of us would ever condone spying by employers.

Oh yeah, I agree. Which is how I personally approach it.

But lets say there are two highly suitable and similar candidates. One who is fully transparent and easy to find on Twitter / Facebook. And one who has no presence whatsoever. Would that sway the employers decision.

I think it has the potential to. I find the whole practice creepy. I remember reading a story about a guy being asked at interview 'why he hates Mumford & Sons', he posted on twitter about how much they suck or something.

But yeah, I can't really blame the employer for having a look. I just wish people in general would wise up about keeping their professional and personal lives separate. And realise that social media is public domain.

I would say that it completely depends on what job you're applying for and who the employer is.

I know my boss wouldn't hire somebody that posts everything about their public and private life on social media, but that's also because he's the head of IT of a school district.

Then look in the perspective of a fast food place, I doubt they would bother looking up anyone on social media because of how many applications they get on a daily basis(I believe they average 200 every one to two weeks).

Then look at a more private company like the Irvine Company or First American where social media can either make or break you.

Personally, I don't have any social media accounts except for a Twitter that I only use under my moniker "EChondo", which is used for tweeting to LTT, Slick and various tech support groups for video games. Then I have a LinkedIn for public information for companies I apply for.

Hell, I just typed in my full name into Google and my LinkedIn profile popped up for the first entry, then everything after that is just religious websites(because my last name is Greek so it's associated with various Orthodox groups). So unless they know to search for "EChondo", then I'm good.
