Reddit vs PC Part Picker vs LTT Forum – Where Should YOU Go for Build Advice?

Plouffe

We can tell you how to build a computer all day long, but for fresh info and some human interaction a lot of people head to the forums for help with figuring out what to buy. But which one will offer the best advice?

As someone struggling to figure out what parts I need due to a super volatile GPU market, I tend to post on all three just to be safe. Currently going for a 7950X3D, 96GB of RAM, and an RTX 4090 for my base parts. Yes, yes I do need it.

I'd imagine that might've been Linus misspeaking, as everywhere else it says 32GB

LTT forums isn't actually that bad in terms of recommendations, you just have to get the right people on at the right time. @Why_Me's build had the best all rounder in terms of specs and I think he did a quite good job but if we wanted raw performance we could've gone up to a used 3080 + 12600k

Btw @Why_Me there was no mean to be disrespectful if I came off across like that, the whole build defo looks better than the other two especially with that orange colour theme and the mix with the white ram and cooler. Also that mobo is pretty sick for am4 (not sick as in the bad version)

Message me on discord (bread8669) for more help

HEAVY +1. Any lurkers that are reading this from YouTube, I highly recommend opening world clock and make post when its morning or evening in US west or east coast time. Europe time is a good interim but the support can be mixed, but Asian time can be pretty dead with most response being either mine or from those who stayed up late in EU and US.

Also, it helps to see the post history of certain users if youre posting in New Builds and Planning. You might see discussions about their builds from other users that also make build lists and posters who also seek help, and maybe see patterns emerging on how people make builds. This will give you a better idea on how to intuitively make a list instead of just following it to a T, and also might give you a better barometer on who you could rely on or who is talking out of their ass. This is a small pool, so being credible is the only way to go.

Oh boy, they created a post on August 30th then resurrected it on October 4th (both of which are on the weekend)?

In hindsight, re-doing the list after resurrecting a 3 month old post is probably warranted, but that's a bit disingenuous @LinusTech. Not sure how the other two listings were handled, but I believe 3 months is enough for it to recommend 'making a new post'?

If they already had bought most or all of the parts besides the cooler, what would we have suggested? Return anything you already have in hand that doesn't make quite as much sense anymore?

I feel like the people who got featured on the LTT video should get some sort of forum badge. Cmon, could be a fun community thing.

If LTT make these videos a random once a year think, it'd be pretty lucrative for people to be more responsive on these platforms to even have the chance of being featured once in these videos. A win/win.

They definitely used inhouse parts, unless Corsair makes Seasonic power supplies and I'm just daft.

TBH I liked @SorryBella's build better with the 12600k and 6700 XT. Also a lot closer to the listed $1k budget.

That's a good idea, like a weekly/monthly BATTLE OF THE BUILDS on the forum where all the top online builders come together to make the best build and the winner gets bragging rights, that'd be heaps of fun

Maybe, maybe not - although I doubt that any social media moderators are free from controversy (I can certainly think of a few here that I've disagreed with). ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

That's true, and is a disadvantage if you don't like real-time chat, although on the flip-side it allows for someone to create a build in real-time and not wait around for a response. So there are positives and negatives (and the same could be said of here vs the LTT Discord). Although, ultimately, in my experience, I would take any build list you get online with a grain of salt no matter where you got it from be it this forum, Reddit, or a Discord server because every community or 'advisor' is going to have their own set of biases and preferences.

That was mentioned in the video.

However, without hindsight, you knew this was a LMG employee or someone who had other parts on hand? Seems like you're making a stretch based on what we know after watching the video, and not with what you would have known in August or early October..
