Ecoflow makes power stations / solar generators / Jackery-alikes that use LiFePo4 (LFP) cells instead of NMC. That chemistry's less energy-dense, but a lot more stable and good for 5 times as many cycles.

I would have gotten one by now but I wouldn't feel safe with such a high capacity house fire starter, without a garage to put it in away from the main house.

Yep.  Most (but not quite all) solar battery storage for buildings is LFP (LiFePo4), as it doesn't "enter thermal runaway" (BURN BABY BURN!) like many other LiPo types, even when shorted or punctured.  So as long as you make sure they're using THAT instead of just saying Lithium Ion Technology or something similar, you're good.  I actually run a LiFePo4 Vertiv UPS on some of my equipment, and it is amazing.  Costs a lot more than the same thing in SLA up front, but battery replacement schedule is like 15+ years rather than every other year like the APC's of similar capacity.

The downside to LiFePo4 is more weight, less energy dense, less max amp draw (and charge amps) compared to other LiPo types.  That's why you typically see the more volatile types in cars and Tesla PowerWalls, as they want weight/density/high output.  LiFePo4 still blows the absolute doors off of anything Lead based though, except for maximum amperage in some configurations.

To everyone who said two graphics cards "just work", you were absolutely correct. 🙂

There was one usb header cable I had to move from the bottom of the board to the port by the sata ports, and windows needed to reboot once to see the second card, but other than that pretty easy.

Looks like you got space for another in there 😉

I did have the 1080 right under the 4070 before I realized I could move that usb header, but the 4070 was getting a little toasty

I did some googling and it sounds like LiFePo4 is safer than sealed lead acid, though its always hard to know what sources are trusted given a lot of places saying this are trying to sell products.

I will certainly be looking at LiFePo4 to replace my UPS, trouble is these power banks which are great value, are too big to fit on my server shelf.  But something of a similar size to my existing UPS could still have WAY more capacity.

It always comes down to space, of which I have none. 😉

I relented and swapped the 3080 back into my regular machine so I could have both 4070 Ti in my foldbox.

I originally had the 3080 there as its pointing out of my room to blow the heat into the rest of the house.  This seemed to make sense except then it meant the 4070 Ti was not being used because of there being the 4090 in this room too - too hot for both.

So if any card was not going to be used, made sense for it to be the 3080 not a 4070 Ti.

With hindsight I could have gotten another case so I could still use the 3080 instead of the 2080 (that's in an ITX case so two slot only).  But honestly I wasn't even sure I was going to use the 2080, until I saw how hard it was going to be to stay in the top 10.

APC and Eaton make lithium UPSes, but they're even more expensive than their lead counterparts and "only" come in traditional UPS capacities.

I've got an APC 2200 that needs eight new 12v 5A batteries for its RBC43 cartridge. Drop-in LiFePo4 replacements are out there, but I think they're mostly intended for emergency lighting and fiber ONT applications. I don't know how they'd hold up to a UPS, and so far I haven't found a blog or anything by someone who's tried.

I sold my soul for ProSupport.

I've always wondered why using those Ecoflow/Jackery etc power stations as UPS isn't a big thing in DIY circles yet. Literally no "UPS" out there unless you oversize to the thousands of $ will get you "a couple hours of runtime" as they're still sized for "safe shutdown and not more" while the power stations actually are able to power things for extended times for cheaper and are such an obvious solution.

I think they lack feedback to safely shut down connected devices, its a bit of sticking point if so.

I'm also not sure if they have the same connected equipment warranties.  Still, if I had the space I'd probably use one.

I actually have the same UPS and whenever I fold all out with my main rig I have to take it off the UPS for the same reason lol

I... just want you to know the "informative" reaction on this was because I felt too strongly about what I saw to not react in some way, but none of the "agree", "funny", or "like" reactions fit with this new information.

I think I live too far in buttf*** nowhere USA to know what in the world Calcium acid batteries are and what are its advantages are over lead acid. Could also be that I have a family member that works in a lead acid battery plant and have never thought to look at anything else other than lead acid...

They also tend to fail over from AC pass-through to inverter slower than a "real" UPS. This is from Ecoflow's FAQ:

Quote

Can I use it as an uninterruptible power supply (UPS)?

DELTA mini can be used as an emergency power supply (EPS), which has the same result as a UPS for most electronics. Here’s the difference: When your DELTA mini is plugged into the wall, any electronics plugged into it get power from the grid, not its battery. When power from the grid stops, it switches to battery supply mode within 30 milliseconds. During that time, sensitive electronics like desktop computers and data servers may turn off, but most devices will run as normal.

https://www.ecoflow.com/us/news/372/ecoflow-delta-mini-faqs

APC rates their Back-UPS line at 6 to 12 milliseconds:

What is the transfer time of the Back-UPS?

[...]

Tranfer time refers to the duration in time it takes the UPS to switch from one state (i.e. Onbattery, Online...) to another.

The transfer time of the BK CS and ES units is 10-12 milliseconds.
The transfer time of the BK RS units is 6-8 milliseconds.

2011 Nissan Leaf with a very not so great battery SOH

So you should rig those batteries up on a trailer, so you can tow more capacity with you!

But you'll need more batteries to haul the batteries around, then more batteries to haul those around... At least rockets expel mass as they burn their fuel!
