Any software dev worth their salt (pun intended) know, deep down, tokens/cookies/whatever are more dangerous than passwords. Passwords are only good for changing passwords.

In my opinion, the cookie store of browsers should be more secure than the password store. As in - NO executable should ever be able to access it unless it created it - especially an executable downloaded after the store was created.

Edit: Another security factor is tying tokens to IP address. Not perfect, but adds another attack vector requirement. This is very embarrassing for Google, not LTT!

Just now, Spotty said:

The descriptions on all of those videos are correct. Are you visiting the video page to check the description or are you looking at the description that appears in a search result? The YouTube search result displays a cached version of the description which may not have updated yet.

oh, I see, that might've become a problem

and to answer the question, yes, I've only looked at the search results

So this vid claim to be the hacker. I haven't clicked it as I don't wanna give traffic to it, whether it's the hacker or some opportunist who wanna go viral.

Anyone know more about this?

If you were that concerned about this type of attack you would simply just use a separate machine or VM to open the attachment, which is far more user friendly than logging out of all of your accounts every time you want to open a file (which you might do hundreds of times throughout the day).

Good advice. I would probably use the VM for interacting with youtube though.

Decided to talk in this thread after lurking for too long, one of the peeps that also witnessed all the craziness at the day it happened (Discovered about the hack at 5:20PM Thursday GMT+7 from Discord). Glad that they got it back really quick, like 17 hours of channel recovery is quick but that's mostly due to LMG reputation as well, although they still had to go through another stressful process of fully recovering channel and video details (descriptions, channel name, etc) along with setting up security measures after the hijack. Can't really say anything other than wishing you all, not just LMG staff but also LTT Forum/ Discord staff hell even LMG social media manager good health and better days ahead, you guys really deserve a short break after handling this, dare I say, supermassive channel hijack. Social engineering is ultimate bitch and session token stealing doesn't help with the situation at all, and the crazy thing is that one is unstoppable force and you can't easily tell, the other one can be worked out but eventually bad actors would still find a workaround for it

The logo of Tesla still shows up and doesn’t go away after refreshing. It’s on an iPhone YouTube.

If you're using the YouTube app try clearing the apps cache through your phones app settings.

I'm not sure if everyone has already noticed, but the people behind LTT'S recent hack have changed some of the video descriptions to include " Double your crypto with tesla!" and the link to the scam webiste. I have enclosed a picture of evidence. the weird thing is, I couldn't find the edited part of the description when I clicked on the video....

Merged to megathread

There's no reason to post new threads for related subjects. Also, please be sure to actually click on video to see if its actually wrong or just caching error. If you find videos which are actually still wrong, do give links so we can alert LMG.

lol for some reason even on a fresh chrome install or even on a YT that never opened up LTT videos it's still showing that tesla logo and even the name plus the old scam description, not that I don't know it's just a cache error but it's annoying regardless

Video search from channel does seems to not having that issue though, and it can shows result based on whats in the description (THANK GOD because I think this wasn't the case back then, at least for me, idk it never worked) so it's a good way to hunt for videos that are still having the scam in the description, and of course I found two examples from that. Checked from regular and incognito, both shows the same so yep it's still not changed for these two example and not cache error

I noticed this as well, it shows the proper logo on the channel page itself.
BUT, when SEARCHING for the channels themselves, it shows the Tesla logo. Both on desktop and mobile.

This is just techlinked, but it's the same for Tech Quickie. Notice how the logo is correct under the "we got hacked, 413k views".

My guess is that Youtube's caching servers for channel logos in the Search is somehow slower/different. But it is certainly an issue.

Ah. I was visiting the channels directly (from the forum side panel). If I use the search it's showing the Tesla icons for me as well.

There's been a few reports of the search results (particularly video descriptions) not being up to date. It seems like the search result data is cached. I have no idea how long it would normally take for that to refresh and update but hopefully it's one of those things that will just correct itself.

Same issue for me via search. Would like to point out that I don't believe I have ever watched a video on Tech Quickie or Tech Linked channels, just the main Linus Tech Tips channel. I assume this is caching on Youtube side.
