Summary

NVIDIA formally launched the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti "Ada" graphics card today,  starting at a MSRP of USD $799. Based on the 4nm "AD104" silicon, the RTX 4070 Ti is essentially the same product as the RTX 4080 12 GB, which NVIDIA decided to cancel from its original mid-November launch.

The card features 7680 CUDA cores, 60 RT cores, 240 Tensor cores, 240 TMUs, and 80 ROPs. It has a 192-bit wide memory interface and 21 Gbps of GDDR6X memory (GDDR6X-effective). The standard power consumption of the card is 285 W, and a 12VHPWR power connector is still employed, even for custom-designed products.

 

NVIDIA claims that the RTX 4070 Ti should enable maxed out AAA gaming with ray tracing at 1440p, while also being formidable at 4K Ultra HD in games that can take advantage of technologies such as DLSS 3 frame-generation, or even classic DLSS 2. The RTX 4070 Ti doesn't appear to feature an NVIDIA Founders Edition model, and is a partner-driven launch, with custom-design cards dominating the scene.

 

The RTX 4070 Ti will be available from January 5, 2023, but we'll have reviews for you before that!

 

My thoughts

Well, it looks like the 4070 Ti is officially launched. Pricing turned out not to be that much better than the 4080 12GB. 3070 Ti launched at $599, so here we're looking at 33% increase in price compared to last gen. 3090 Ti performs 33% better than a 3070 Ti, and this is supposed to be faster than that. A 3DMark leak for the 4070 Ti came out on December 31st, and according to that the performance of the 4070 Ti compared to the 3090 Ti is pretty close. What this means for the rest of the stack, however, is what is concerning; 4070, 4060 Ti, 4060, 4050 Ti, 4050. Looks like those cards aren't going to be priced that well, sadly. This gen of performance is quite substantial, but the value prospect has not been so good, unfortunately.

Summary

The GeForce RTX 4070 Ti that we review today started life as the GeForce RTX 4080 12 GB, and was announced at the same time as the RTX 4080 16 GB. NVIDIA isn't producing a Founders Edition of the RTX 4070 Ti, so we have only factory-overclocked custom designs in our launch day reviews. At 1080p, the 4070 Ti is 4% faster than the RTX 3090 Ti, at 1440p both cards are evenly matched, and at 4K the 3090 Ti is 10% faster. That's a surprisingly big range; things are no different when compared to the RTX 7900 XT: -4% at 1080p, -8% at 1440p, and -10% at 4K.

While the card is not priced appropriately, it still trades blows with a 3090 Ti; a card that launched for $2000. The problem is because there is no Founders Edition version of this 4070 Ti, finding a card for the $799 MSRP is going to be quite difficult. More so, is the fact that because the card trades blows with a 3090 Ti, resale establishments will mostly like price it according to that fact (price hikes? scalping?). NVIDIA really had a chance here to relieve gamers by releasing a rebranded 4080 12GB with a competitive price and it seems they missed the mark. Ada is shaping up to be a very difficult generation of GPUs, providing great performance but awful value. This doesn't bode well for the rest of the Ada Lovelace stack.

This is pretty much not a surprise that they didnt want to change the price much, because they know they wont sell many FE models and the other ones will cost the original MSRP and it will have accomplished nothing. 800$ 3090ti Isnt bad, but its not a 3090ti, Memory wise, Bandwidth, and other factors.

I'm curious how much of this performance is like for like improvement over Ampere, and how much might be from DLSS 3. If basic gaming performance is comparable to or better than 3090 Ti then I think it isn't bad vs other new options on the market. This could even put it on a par with 7900XTX for RT games, but we'll have to see wider testing.

What seems to be the case, however, is that there will be no FE model. Only AIB/AIC versions. Meaning we might not even see the $800 MSRP.

The render is most likely just that, a render. There will be no Founders Edition version of the 4070 Ti from what is being explained. Only partner cards will be available. Therefore, however the partners feel like orienting the 12VHPWR is how it will be oriented.

JFC 50/50Ti series selling for what 70 series used to cost back when 70 series was just a minor step down from 80 series. Yeah I gotta agree with Linus Torvalds also

And it means the Ada x70 series is going to cost as much as what the x80 Ti series used to cost. e.g. 1080 Ti MSRP was $699. Now accounting for inflation the 1080 Ti today would cost around $849. While the regular 4080 16GB (a non-Ti card) costs $1200. Sheesh.

I miss when 70 series was $330, and even the higher end AIB models like Asus Strix and Gigabyte Gaming were only $350 or $360. Ugh and the GTX 970 wasn't that much of a step down from the 980 and nearly matched previous gen flagship performance. Then 1070 matched previous gen flagship at $450. 3070 almost matched previous gen flagship at $500. Now $800 (really going to be $900 with AIB models) to come close to the 3000 series flagship, gross.

Yay more completely inexcusable and misleading charts!

I guess if Nvidia does this enough they will eventually get hit with a consumer protection fine or misadvertising suit from the investors. Just waiting for the next quarterly to see how many people jump ship after the 4080 and projected 4070ti sales numbers come in.

The 1000 series was really the start to Nvidias foooked up prices. I haven't been excited for a GPU in a minute thanks to meh advances with PHAT price tags.

I think nvidia just wants a warchest with those prices to survive blackwell at this point given that its their (last) monolithic design (possibly, dont know yet), and will be on 3nm where there is ZERO scaling for cache. It will be a shit show in terms of die size vs performance increase gen over gen. which is bad news when 3nm cost SO MUCH MORE then 5nm, when 5nm already costs a stupid amount.

Honestly, its weird to me with the projected ram prices going forward dropping precipitously with micron even cutting back on some manufacturing because they have to much right now. They could have easily cut another 50 dollars off the launch price, let OEM get the shit for going over 800 dollars. 
If it beats the 3090ti by 1.2x... cool I guess that (was) a 1600 dollar card. But if they were using DLSS to reach those numbers. Uh... no.

I mean on the one hand it's 3090ti performance for the same price (if not a hair cheaper) that used 3090s go for currently.

 

On the other hand that's a 2 year old card and this card is about 250$ too expensive for my taste...

That's one of the more interesting things to me too. It has been a wish list feature for DLSS-like processing for video for a while. We're may finally get it. Down side is it looks like it will only be offered on Ampere and newer. Turing is out. Wonder if it is a hardware limitation (like DLSS 3's Optical Flow requirement) or if they need more time to validate (like RTX voice).

 

How long before AMD does it too?

Sure, the averagest of Joes would probably be going for a 50 or 60 class GPU, and a 70Ti class is decidedly higher end than that.

 

On the other hand the 70 class has historically been an enthusiast class GPU that most enthusiasts with a bit of disposable income could easily afford. That was even true of the 3070 to some extent. Heck, even the 80 class was attainable to people with slightly deeper pockets until a few generations ago.

 

Sure, the 3070ti is going to be more expensive and slot between a 70 class and an 80 class but its name suggests a card that isn't out of reach of the vast majority of PC gamers...

 

I don't need a new GPU, but I've historically bought GPUs around 300-400 USD. If I had previously bought something like a 970 or 1070 and was looking for an upgrade, I'd be seriously miffed about needing to settle for a 50-class GPU. That ego hit experienced by Nvidia customers definitely shouldn't be ignored but they seem to.

In this case, EVERY THING on the 4070ti v 3090TI was a lie, it never once out performed the 3090ti in any of those games listed.
