Looking for a high-end screen with 32 inch, 4k, 120hz+, hdr and IPS or better

Tech Enthusiast

Been a journey I have been on for years now.

In the past 2 years several screens have popped up, for quite hefty prices.

I am looking at these two:

* LG UltraGear 32GQ950-B, 31.5" - https://geizhals.de/lg-32gq950-b-a2730590.html

* ASUS ROG Swift PG32UQX, 32" - https://geizhals.de/asus-rog-swift-pg32uqx-a2507431.html

As you can see the prices are around 1k and around 3,4k. So quite a difference.

Obviously the ASUS one is much better. MiniLED, over 1000 dimming zones and 1400 vompared to 1000 HDR. But I am not willing to spend (much) more than 1k really. Maybe 1500,...

... my question is: Is there a middle ground Screen somewhere? Something that offers a little better display tech than the LG Ultragear, without increasing the price by 3x?

I am not willing to go below 32 inch size or below 1000 peak brightness. That kind of makes the search very narrow and hard. 😉

Better on paper, certainly. How much of a difference will that make and is it worth the price? Probably not.

I would recommend to have a look at the monitor lists, buying guides and reviews on:

That is exactly my thinking. Better yes, but not 3x the price better.

I have found one more contenter in those lists, but it seems hard to find in any store or even a review,...

* Acer Predator X32 FP - https://www.idealo.de/preisvergleich/OffersOfProduct/202056432_-predator-x32-fp-acer.html#datasheet

Certainly, at my absolute upper limit at around 1600 bucks.

Any Monitor Geek here that could give an insight on how well those 550+ dimming zones and mini led compare to the LG Ultragear? Would it be a (very) noticeable difference that warrants the extra 600 bucks?

That one is pretty dimm and curved / ultrawide. Not a big fan of either. 😞

Dim ?? Not really but yes only HDR400, 1000 only on peaks, but no monitor do much better

It has best reviews everywhere, like https://www.rtings.com/monitor/reviews/dell/alienware-aw3423dw

And price is decent not like the ASUS 3K thing 😛

Curved Ultrawide is more of personal taste tho, but after switching to it (using the previous AW3421DW, from a Iiyama 27 QHD)I won't go back now, it's quite good for gaming immersion

I also never a fans of VA but after I use Samsung latest VA panel which no black smearing issue. Now I much prefer VA as it got deep black and higher contrast which is great for HDR.

I did not own this Neo G7 but I am plan for buying this G7 or G8 where I can't decide yet as second monitor together with my current Neo G9 which is the one make me look differently on VA.

Neo G7 obviously better than the LG offer except viewing angle which is VA panel weaknesses. If you seldom sharing screen, they is no issue as seat in front of it is always look great.

I am not willing to go below 32 inch size or below 1000 peak brightness. That kind of makes the search very narrow and hard. 😉

i assume you are expecting a certain level of image quality, one model that matches them are obviously the AW3423DW if you can look past the 4k requirement (it really is that close to the pg32uqx, without the blooming too), it is less bright but in a dim room the it does the job. using an amd card mostly fixes the text issues out of the box, manual pixel refresh after long sessions, and some burn-in risks remain.

For 4k options, the cheapest one is the gp27u, basically the more recent version with a more affordable panel then the x27 that was out in 2018, i don't own it, but there are some QC issues, but for 1k that's about what i'd expect, not a problem when buying from amazon. It also comes with hdmi 2.1 unlike the uqx. Higher pixel density at 27inch (it is noticeble between 4k 32inch and 27inch, the pixels are just smaller). use 8bit instead of 10bit 120hz with hdr on through hdmi if you have an nvidia gpu and let the gpu do the dithering.

Not having Gsync is a positive, as both my x27s died relating to gsync module and/or fan issues around 3-4years after purchase. freesync+vsync does just as well without the additional point of failure

the 32gq950 does not have local dimming, so thats out

Onto the PG32UQX, a few things to keep in mind, the 32inch 4k panels are generally alot slower than 27inch models, so it's not really a 165hz or 144hz monitor, but it will do 120. Blooming exists even if it's mini-led. It has a slightly wider gamut than the gp27u and does not have a hdmi 2.1 port due to gsync. dp 1.4 DSC should be fine (but it's more janky than hdmi 2.1), overall i don't think it's worth the price premium at all over the gp27u

TLDR it's between the AW3423DW and the gp27u, the AW3423DW provides the best viewing experience but if you need 4k and pixel density, go with the gp27u

Been a journey I have been on for years now.

In the past 2 years several screens have popped up, for quite hefty prices.

I am looking at these two:

* LG UltraGear 32GQ950-B, 31.5" - https://geizhals.de/lg-32gq950-b-a2730590.html

* ASUS ROG Swift PG32UQX, 32" - https://geizhals.de/asus-rog-swift-pg32uqx-a2507431.html

The middle ground is either go below - Cooler Master new 27 inches miniLED looks excellent - well over 1000 nits peak (actually even fullscreen even if I remember correctly from Nada review), well over 500 dimming zones and a fast IPS with great motion performance and only cost 800 buck

Or go big - if you absolutely need 1000 nits, Samsung QN90B 43 inches can be had for some very affordable price (sub-1000 for me) and came with hundreads of dimming zone or you can something even cheaper with better SDR alternative like FV43U (that only have a few dimming zones but offer technically a FALD system as opposed to the Edge-lit LG and VA don't need as much zones for HDR compared to IPS.) If not, you have a platora of OLED option to dig around (but C2 42 inches are a no brainer.)

If you don't mind paying more and it absolutely needs to be a monitor, Neo G7 and Alienware QD-OLED are your best bet.

Thanks all for the suggestions.

After doing a few more hours of Google and Reddit Research, checking each and every suggestion here,... I am quite sure that there simply is no Monitor matching my wanted specs, apart from the damn expensive Asus thing in my OP. The LG one seems to be the closest match for around 1k, without having too many drawbacks that are unbearable.

Sadly, I have been burnt by ultrawide and curved screens (tried both and hated both to be frank). This further limits my options, since "gaming" monitors seem to go the way of the curve at this point, at least quite a few of them.

27 Inch really is not an option either (this would increase my options like 10x, I know), since 32 inch really turns out to be the sweet spot for me. My wife still has one 27 inch screen and looking at them side by side, it gets dwarfed by the 32 inch. Ontop of that 32 inch seems to be the limit on what my field of view allows, without missing crucial popups and informations on the sides. So going bigger is not an option, since I can't place the monitor further away from me right now (this may change once we move into the new house in about half a year).

So for now it seems to be the two options from my OP, with the LG being the much better value for sure. Even knowing the clear advantages of the Asus Monitor, I can't justify the 3x price hike. Going for the "cheap" 1k option from LG allows me to have fun now and once a great 32 inch OLED (or better) with the desired specs shows up for 1500 or less,... I can just switch and sell the LG one.

Thanks again for all your input and suggestions!

  • 5 months later...

Like the Forum says, this thread is old and I should try not reviving this one, i want to do it either way, for the simple fact that I am 100% in the same situation.

 @Tech Enthusiast I would love to know what you decided to do now.

For me its the same way, I hate Ultrawide and Curved and if I buy a 32" Monitor, it has to be good and I don't mind spending up to 1500€ for it.

At this Moment in time I am thinking about buying the Acer Predator X32 FP but I am not sure.
As well as going for a new GPU that can handle 4K.

Anyone got any valuable input for this dilemma?

There's no great flat 4k 32 inches with HDR right now unfortunately.

If you must, and need it right now, I think it's better to just go for something cheap (like Gigabyte M32U) and save the money for when something better came up. You can also just use whatever you've bought right now as a secondary monitor then.

I am reaching the same conclusion. If I spend 1500 for like the Acer X32 FP I want good HDR. I went ahead and got me an ok 27" Odyssey G4 because the 32" Gigabyte is still 800+€ which I wont spend on a temporary solution. The G4 will go to my GF when I buy myself a good Flat HDR Monitor. Lets hope someone makes a great OLED Flat one soon 😄

Thank you for your input @e22big

There are flat OLED monitors, just not at 32 inches.

The thing about HDR is that, it's especially bad for something like an IPS. You will never get the same level of OLED or even VA due to the panel's poor native contrast. Doesn't matter if it could reach 1000 nits full screen or have well over 1000 zones of FALD, the panel would just still have poor contrast and blooming all over the place. It won't be until you've reached 10,000 zones level ala iPad where it's starting to become more competitive.

IMO, VA and OLED are the only two types of panels well suited for HDR. VA has poor viewing angles, thus you need curve to combat it, OLED is limited by heat, thus you need a relatively lower pixel density or risk increased chances of burn-in (and lower brightness by extension.) That's what lead to the current where you have either 4k curved VA or 1440p flat OLED when it comes to HDR.

4k 32 inches IPS HDR will probably be coming out sooner or later, but it will be a really a long while before they 'git good' at this game

As far as I have seen, the Acer X32 FP is the closest to being good. But if i look at the 32" https://www.displayninja.com/msi-mpg321ur-qd-review/ from MSI for 500€ less with HDR 600, it seems alot better, because it seems like they reach the HDR 600.  What i like about both, is the integrated KVM Switch, i got Work Laptop, private PC and a Customer Laptop on my Desk.

Any thoughts on the MSI-MPG @e22big ?

This MSI is HDR 600 and 16 local dimming zone. This is far worst than Acer which is HDR 1000 with 576 local dimming zone.

The MSI is not a good HDR monitor especially it is IPS with not helping 16 local dimming zone for high contrast and deeper black, but instead generate terrible blooming when local dimming is on.

If you want great HDR, you need to get mini-LED in VA/IPS with 1000+ local dimming zone or OLED.
