Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 and Neo G8 short review

Finally, I had both displays. Here is my Short Review of both Neo G9 and Neo G8.

Today I just know 32" 4K in 125% scaling is kind of exact size in 27" (34", 49") 1440p in 100% scaling.

Very shocking to know both resolution (5120x1440 and 3840x2160) has kind of same benchmark result. (I do had check the resolution is correct or not).

 

 

Pros of Neo G9

• Very immersive feel due to it very long aspect ratio.
• 32:9 is still better for me in productivity as I can open 3 apps side by side. 16:9 only can open max 2 apps.
• Joystick OSD navigation is very easier to use.
• Totally no tearing issue.
• They is no scan line issue even on 240hz as reviewer said.
• Deep black like OLED when local dimming on.

 

Pros of Neo G8

• Gaming and movies apps compatibility I will going to vote for 16:9 aspect ratio.
• The matte surface is like totally blocking the light source without impact to the screen look.
• Crisp and sharp image and text clarity.
• They are totally no black smearing issue to me and also, they are no scan line issue even on 240hz as reviewer said.
• Deep black like OLED when local dimming on.
• Very great screen uniformity even without using local dimming.
• Outstanding HDR performance! It is much better than Neo G9.

 

Cons of Neo G9

• They is slightly black smearing for very dark scenes.
• Local Dimming is not good in productivity usage.
• 1440p is not crispy sharp and clear especially on Windows icon, text and also games quality after you use and taste the 2160p monitor.

 

Cons of Neo G8

• The 4-way button is very difficult to navigate the OSD.
• Local Dimming is not good in productivity usage.

• Windows - Use HDR: Off (only on when required using Start + Alt + B)
• Windows - SDR Content Brightness: 9
• OSD - Black Equalizer: 12 (only can set at SDR mode)
• OSD - Picture Mode: HDR Standard
• OSD - Brightness: 52 (100 in HDR)
• OSD - Contrast: 58 (75 in HDR)
• OSD - Color: Red 36, Green 38, Blue 56
• Local Dimming: Auto

• Windows - Use HDR: Off (only on when required using Start + Alt + B)
• Windows - SDR Content Brightness: 9
• OSD - Black Equalizer: 13 (SDR), 15 (HDR)

• OSD - Brightness: 46 (100 in HDR)
• OSD - Contrast: 57 (75 in HDR)

I decide set my Windows HDR Off by default and only On when necessary using Win+Alt+B shortcut key.

Reason for doing this as I find even though HDR On did not washed out but HDR Off give much better color output for Windows and by using this method, I can left Local Dimming Auto and no need to change it as with HDR Off, then the Local Dimming will auto On when HDR content detect.

I decide to do a little bit changes on my Samsung Odyssey G8 Neo. The main changes is Turn Off the Contrast Enhancer as I found this make the contrast over done and deep black too black.

The Samsung Odyssey Neo G8 monitor has one major flaw! The color setting will be reset to the default value from time to time.

I set the RGB to 44, 45, 56, but it keeps resetting to 50, 50, 50...

 

Edit: This problem is solved once I set same setting for all input.

I think Nvidia driver update something as both my monitor Samsung Odyssey Neo G8 and Neo G9 doesn't have any new firmware update but yesterday when I try out the HDMI connection and I can select 12-bit color which I remember they is no 12-bit option previously.

 

So now I am using HDMI 2.1 connection since it had better bandwidth and from the calculator here where totally no need compression if set both at 120hz. Beside this 12-bit color only available for HDMI connection.

What do you mean by that? The G9 Neo is much brighter than the G8 Neo (according to the latest firmware upgrade, RTings), and it also has significantly more zones per inch than the G8 Neo, resulting in less blooming at the same level of brightness. I assume the G9 Neo is almost twice as bright (in Real HDR Scene) due to this fact (because of the number of zones). Otherwise, the panels are almost identical (VA, Color Gamut, Color Volume are almost the same or even G9 Neo has a slight edge in that). A reviewer on Youtube compared them and he said that they felt almost identical (at the same level of brightness I assume).

I'm using your settings mentioned in this thread and at the moment I have these 3 settings set as follows:

Brightness 80%

Contrast 65%

Gamma 0.81
