World first 160x160mm fan is out

Dogzilla07

We've had 170x140mm fans with 120mm mounting holes, 160x140mm fans with 120mm mounting holes, and 150x140mm, but now for the first time in history, a 160x160x25mm fan from Silverstone. and it has a 6 pole motor!:

World first rgb 160mm fan is out

160mm has existed long before this fancy silverstone rgb fan but prob the reason 160mm isnt common is just no one uses them other than niche cases or something like that, its just 80,92,120,140, and 200 for common pc fans though unsure about those old cases with massive sidefans, maybe some of those got 160mm fans

I had an old Cooler Master HAF X that came with a combination of 200 and 230mm fans.... 12 years ago.

Nope, Thermalright, Noctua and Raijintek fans have been out for more than a decade now. Even 170x140mm. With Noctua maxing out at 150x140, While Thermalright had both 170 and 160 like seen in the geizhals link in the first post. 170 on the left in the military colors, and 160 on the right in black&white. They were all very widely used in Dual Tower Air Coolers.

Can you provide proof please ?, for non-industrial consumer 160x160mm fans that mount on 140mm holes ? It's possible I might have missed some old ones, but I'm 95% sure this Silverstone is the first of its kind in the consumer space (same like Silverstone was the first with 180x180mm fans).

Me too, very cooling looking, but awful noise-normalized performance with filter. 120mm Scythe Gentle Typhoon at 800-1200RPM beat them.

My Aerocool X-Predator case with 2 x 230mm fans would like to have a word with you.

You're making it sound like 160x160 is something revolutionary, when 180 and 200mm were common years ago

There's also fans like the 172x150 models for example :

How else would you call the first of it's kind ?

And those are neither consumer fans, nor true 160mm fans which mount on 140mm mounting holes. They are more akin to the Thermalright in the pictures above.

Again don't get me wrong, I understand the sentiment, "Oh there were bigger fans before", nothing special, just that I don't agree with it, nor share the feeling. And it's not like these Silverstone will move mountains or top the charts (it's possible, especially with the potentially good motor, but that's more likely for dual tower air coolers, and less for cases). They're quite slim at 25mm, and case mounting isn't optimized for them (other than the Fractal Torrent Series).

What I am ecstatic about is the potential they represent, and the precedent they set, for awesome potential coolers of this size in the 2024-2034 era.

What I do agree with is that noise-normalized performance wise the 2021-2024 era for large fans looks like to be dominated by Fractal Design Dynamic X2 GP-18/Prisma AL-18, squarely on that 38mm fatness of its. (GamersNexus video incoming). But Silverstone might suprise us yet, if they release 180x32mm versions with improved motors.

@Hairless Monkey Boy I did typo/not write the exact dimensions for each fan, nor the full mounting capabilities. To be specific the largest 170 one is 170x153mm and comes with both 120mm mounting holes and 140mm mounting holes (depending on the orientation):

spacer.png

And additionally the black&white on the right is not the correct picture for the 160x140mm model on the (Archon, Shaman and original Silver Arrow (1)), this is the correct one:

spacer.png

The black&white above is 152x140mm, but there were many 150x140mm versions as well.

True, the 150x140mm Thermalright fans matched/outperformed all their bigger brothers (160x140, 170x150, brought nothing). All 200,230x25 fans also completely useless from a noise-normalized performance with a dust filter. Only the 200x30mm Noctua didn't do horrible noise-normalized(and has major bearing noise advantanges), but still all of them got beat by the Silverstone 180x32mm fans (with a caveat). And then all of the above got beat by the new Fractal 180x38mm.

And it's not 100% clear if the new Fractal 180x38mm can beat Blacknoise NB eLoop 140x29mm. And it's not 100% clear if the NB eLoop even beats Phanteks 120x30mm xD (+ Thermalright 152x140x27mm + Arctic P14 RGB-ARGB as well, phew)

But lots of them look really cool, and work well when u don't need top noise-normalized performance.

I also really wonder how this Shark Force 6-pole motor compares to Be Quiet! SW3 6-pole motor.

well gn is close to testing fans just hold off a bit...i dont think hes interested in exuting size fans but probably after the 120 and 140s he might. dont think he has a test plate for it. he dose for a 180 thow.
