How to mount amplifier bellow desk?

Sargon

I would like to make some space on my desk, and the amplifier takes a lot of space.

I wanted to put it bellow the desk, but putting "trolly" is not ideal. I would rather it would be mounted under the desk.

How do you suggest to do that?

I've an Onkyo A-9010, which has a somewhat similar design (grills on top for venting heat)
I used to run it with a monitor sitting on top (got a mount now), and the stand would block maybe 30% of the grills.

But it's only ever driving two bookend speakers and i'd never have it more than like 1/4, 1/3 volume, so i've never noticed a considerable amount of heat off of it.

Obviously you couldn't have it flush with the table, but you might get away with a few cm gap if it doesn't run hot??

You'd need to really keep an eye on it though.

What about sticking it on a stool or something under the desk instead?

What is that amp going to be driving? If the speakers will be on the desk, you are gonna need the space for them anyway, so might aswell put the pc on the floor and the amp on top.

Otherwise probably quad C brackets, that screw under the desk and in place of the feet of the amp, should do the trick. You have to watch out for the space above the amp, I would leave minimum 3inch, but check the manual of the amp, so that it doesn't overheat and die prematurely.

Btw not a bad idea. The amp won't get hot at low to mid power, it'll save space, and it'll lift the monitor up so the center of the screen is in better position to your eyes, helping with a "nerd neck".

I'd be more cautious not about overheating of the amp, but about dropping or spilling something in the vents.

I used them to clean dust and "gel" from putting lan cables inside the wall. They stayed there since then, as an art installment.

I think it's time for DIY project.

First off, if you mount the amplifier under the table, you're blocking some important airflow (what the hell italic?) that needed to cool the amplifier.

I think you can DIY a shelf below the table with plank and metal. Make sure to have some airflow.

If you don't want DIY, the best way is place it on the table or under the floor.

What is "quad C brackets"? I don't actually know what are the possible solution.

I don't think it needs a lot of airflow, but probably, the head is going to rise? So it needs some gap to flow around? Not sure.

I don't even think it has a fan.

It does get hot, but not terribly hot.

So what are the things I can buy and mount it? What kind of types?

Hmm... I might use a PC mount and put the amplifier perpendicular.

Or... make something from wood.

check the manual of the amp,

Here it is:

Install this unit in a well ventilated, cool, dry, clean
place with at least 30 cm on the top, 20 cm on the
left and right, and 10 cm at the back of this unit
— away from direct sunlight, heat sources,
vibration, dust, moisture, and/or cold.

No, never.  Unless it's designed for vertical installation.  You will overheat something that way.

Just mount shelf under the table, while leaving enough empty space above it. Like 5-10cm is probably enough. Though even better would be to add some shelves on the table, or behind it. Or do you need to constantly adjust it by hand?

Yea, I think I am more leaning toward building like a "house" shelve above it.

So the amplifier is on the table, but there is like shelve with legs laying above it.

Yamaha recommends 30cm but there's probably loads of people who put other components right on top.

This is a fairly unique problem though, not too many people have large amps on their desk.

The easiest approach is to just turn your AVR sideways and leave it on your desk. It'll probably be fine unless you're trying to CRANK the volume. If you're listening near field, (under 10' away) at reasonable loudness levels with reasonably efficient speakers, it's highly unlikely that heat will be a problem. If heat IS a problem, add a single fan.

For what it's worth, I had a budget AVR set sideways for YEARS without issue. It's not best practice, but there's some engineering overhead built into these units anyway - A LOT of people shove them in a cabinet with 0 breathing room above.

Also enable eco-mode if it exists. This cuts the voltage to the AVR's amp when it's not needed.

For some context - if that unit IS an rx-v430, it looks like the replacement cost on ebay is under $100 (I see one for $45). Building a shelf might cost more than just assuming the unit'll fail in 10 years instead of in 20 years.

The other approach - if you have some flexibility and you only care about running 2x bookshelf speakers - sell your AVR and get something like a AIYIMA A07 TPA3255 (assuming you ONLY care about amplification and not signal processing or bluetooth connectivity or HDMI connectivity).

At that point, they are expecting heat output that in other circumstances would be handled by active cooling...

Most amp are large, I think due to it having some electrical components that can't make them smaller.

I tried to find a smaller amp, but there was no decent amp that is much smaller.

Just place it sideways... making a shelf will cost more than your AVR. If you want to try something VERY low cost - possibly an ikea table pushed all the way back and under the desk. It's still probably not worth the effort.

As an FYI, an amplifier is only one part of your unit, there's also a DSP and a few other thigns in it - hence the term AVR (audio/video receiver). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AV_receiver

Ok, for the love of god, just get an end table.  Something 1/2 the height of your desk.  Put the PC tower on top of it, and put the amplifier under it.
