new build any useful suggestions?

I think a use case or some sort of guidance on what you are doing and what you are looking for as far as recommendations could definitely help as currently theres no information at all.

nvm , i think the first build may be ok but the second build is far overspec'd for the task

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: first will be used for gaming second it will be used for movies. htpc

The D15 will likely hit the ram. You can use it, but be prepared to use a dremel cut off. Obviously, the low profile vengeance will clear, but the corsair vengeance ram uses less desirable parts, something about samsung b die.

I like the Asus Z690 A strix for a ddr4 build. It has four m2 slots.

And 12700k will save you 200 bucks.

Also the 1000 power supply is larger fyi.

For the first build, you're overspending on your CPU and underspending on your GPU. The difference between a 12700K and a 12900K is pretty minimal in games, while the difference between a 3070 and a 3080 (the price difference between those two CPUs) is pretty big. Plus, the NH-D15 can't keep up with the 12900K under full load, so in situations where the 12900K would be faster, it'll likely be thermal throttling. Plus, if you rearrange the budget a bit (I.E. by not getting a $600 motherboard), you could fit a 3090 in that system without much trouble.

For the second system, for just watching movies an i3 12100 and a B660 board is about as much as you could need. There's no reason to be spending $800+ on a system that could realistically be done by a $35 Raspberry Pi or a Chromecast.

That's too bad. There are so many good deals on ebay.

Amazon warehouse is another option to save money.

Prices are coming down. Used eBay and Marketplace don’t really make sense anymore. Even the XC3 is cheaper than the eBay one you linked

I'm not actually trying to be as grumpy as it seems.

I will find your mentions of Ikea or Gnome and I will /s post.

Again, A 12100 will do that. An HTPC needs basically no performance. You'd have a hard time telling the difference between an i5 4460 and a 12600K in HTPC tasks, there's no reason to be getting that overkill of a CPU that will just be idling for its entire life.

What do you think will happen in 8 years? Support is shit for pc with streaming services so Appletv/chromecast/nvidiashield is smart for that but other stuff needs no horsepower. 8K is a pipedream 8 years from now unless we leap from quality that can be reached with 1080p to 8k raw.

What are you doing on there that an 8400 isn't enough? Either there's something going wrong with that machine or there's something you're not letting on about what the PC is doing, since for watching movies an 8400 should be plenty.
