There's not really anything special that it does that can't be handled by holding the power button.

Also, it would be a royal pain every time you accidentally pressed it (which is a lot easier to do on a mobile device).

99% of user won't use them they either pull the plug, flip the PSU switch or hold the power button.

My desktop doesn't even have a reset button. That's what this is for

My old Compaq laptop has a force restart function of the power button though, if you hold alt while pressing it or something. Never used it though.

I don't have a reset button on both of my desktops, it's not needed anymore really.  It was helpful when restarting a computer took 10 minutes vs a much shorter reset.  Now, even a full boot from my pc is only a few seconds longer than waking it from sleep.

some laptops have certain keyboard combos that will force restart/reset, cannot speak for all of them though

 

for example many Chromebooks have reload + power button acting as reset "button"

Your desktop has restart button? the only button other than power is the reset on motherboards I've used. I never used reset either, if my case has an extra button I wire it to clear CMOS instead

I've used the reset button on my case a few times when my PC just hard froze and was unresponsive, but I could've just as well pressed the power button for a few seconds to forcefully shutdown and then reopen my PC (it's just longer to do). Which is what you'd do on a laptop. A reset button is thus not an absolute requirement to have.

On a laptop, a button that reset everything the moment you touch it, would be a bad idea. Especially considering the number of times I've accidently pressed the power button on my laptop and sent it to sleep...

Mostly needed when trying to fix an overclock. Possibly before updating your BIOS as well, since it's always good to reset it to default beforehand (though it doesn't really matter 99% of the time)

Isn't long hold on the power button basically the same as reset on most laptops?

 

Yeah technically it does a hard shuts down and you need to press it again to restart the computer but it will serve the same purpose as using a reset button.

Because most non-techies even remember reset buttons exist. Everyone has been conditioned with "if frozen, hold power".
