Quotes

Quote

The Stacked CMOS sensor, which will have very fast readout, can shoot Raw bursts at 30 fps. When used with compatible RF lenses, its in-body stabilization can reduce shake by up to eight stops. Autofocus has been enhanced over current EOS R models, with improved face/eye/head and animal detection, plus new car and motorcycle tracking capabilities. Canon says that the R3 will be able to focus at light levels as low as -7EV.

The R3 will be able to capture oversampled 4K, with support for Canon Log3 and Raw internal recording.

From the images we've already seen, we already knew that the camera is going to have a dual-grip body and Canon has said it'll have build quality and weather-sealing up to the standard of a 1D X model. It's perhaps unsurprising, then, that it's now confirmed as being a magnesium alloy body.

What's interesting is that despite appearing to be smaller than the EOS-1D X III, the R3 will also use the same large-capacity LP-E19 battery. It's a 30Wh battery (nearly twice the capacity of the EOS R5's LP-E6NH) which should see the R3 deliver plenty of shots per charge, even if its reliance on live view means it can't be expected to provide DSLR levels of stamina.

My thoughts

Nice to see the same bat from 1Dx mk2/mk3, not a big fan of the mixed slots 1 CF express and 1 SD, wish they used sonys dual card slot system of 2 each.
if this isn't the 1Dx replacement I wonder what the R1 will be like given very little here is missing from what could be an R1
Clog3 is great as Clog1 is kinda meh
likely to be a lower MP sensor in the 20-32mp range. No need to go 45mp like the R5

Feels like there keeping this for the 1dx iii class cameras, kinda sucks though. Would like dual cfexpress cards.

Yea, If it was 45 mp + they would probably pull out the 8k branding again like they did with the r5. Id guess a bit more than 20mp, but since low light af is advertised, probably not much more.

Curious how it will do video. Im guess they will do full res raw video(like the r5/1dx3). Probably won't overhead cause big body = big heatsink?

Im curious how much better the af is. My r5 is pretty darn good with af already, but I want to see how smart the tracking can be.

yeah, but sony does this which would work good

sounds like some flavor of raw video and 4k oversampled

about 1 stop lower and motor/autosports tracking

The only issue with that solutio if cf express type a cards seems to be much more rare, slower and lower capacity. I think only sony makes the cards, and they max out at 160gb, while CFexpress type b cards can be 2tb and about half the price per gb.

I don't really think the speed of the second sd card will affect you much for writing raw to both cards. Since its probably less than 45mp and has a big buffer thats still a lot of shots (probably 100+) before the buffer goes at max burst with full raw.

yeah but you could certainly make it work with dual TypeB +2 SD vs TypeA+SD

right but for redundancy I'd like 2 of the same speed, if I'm in the 5-7k body range

Yea Id like dual cfexpress type b cards, but I think canon is making you buy the 1 series bodies for that feature, and using that as a way to gimp the r3(since there will probably be a r1, and you gotta have some reason to  buy it).

I don't really see a point of sd cards, the good uhs ii cards are basically the same price as cfexpress and slower.

yeah, this seems though like focused at sports, and other action photographers they don't need a 45mp sensor

the only reason I see SD cards still on it is for JPEG backup but yeah it can go on this body

Might be a heat thing.  A single CF Express card gets fucking hot after just a short time of continued use.  Hot enough that you don't really want to touch it.  They may not want to have two of them without some sort of cooling fan, like they do in the C-series video cameras.

sony though seems to have little issue with dual CF express cards in a fan less desgine
the 1DX did 5.6k raw, these large canon bodies have plenty of thermal capacity and can dissipate the heat

We've a couple more years for that, I'd guess.  And in that time, Canon could possibly update their Digic processor to speed things up even further.  Further improvements in the auto focusing and number of points, etc.  There's lots that can be done between now and then.

We've been discussing, and we think that the R1 might follow in the footsteps of the Sony a1 in that it might very well be the "ultimate photo/video hybrid".
