A Valve Switch?

Summary

Valve has been developing a new piece of hardware for quite some time. This appears to be according to the recent changes in Steam’s code a new device called the 'SteamPal'. The name itself is a derivative of a previously discovered code with the term 'Neptune' which appeared last year in September with a 'Neptune Optimized Games' string. People who checked the code back in September thought it might be a reference to some type of controller. For the record, the name 'SteamPal' is very likely a internal name, not something specifically for the public. The 'SteamPal' wants to be a Switch competitor. Valve has kind of hinted (thanks to Gabe) that they may want to go on consoles, but they weren't specific.

My thoughts

Considering we’re talking about Valve creating their own hardware again, they’ve been known for their lack of popularity and ultimate cancellation of their project (like the Steam Machines). Though with that said, the Valve Index did pretty good despite the fact that it had lackluster supplies because of high demand (and ofc 2020). Whether if this particular new hardware is gonna become popular (and also available), all remain the be seen.

what kind of power would be needed to run these? id imagine its aiming for high settings 60fps? the pricing would be insane

Id be curious on what hardware it would run. Seeing how a few "Switch" like PC's exist I wonder what they will do differently?

Hopefully they do something different than being more of a clone, and if using steam OS?

Hope to see what this offers, and they often do projects tied to other things they do.

I guess big picture mode stuff, streaming and maybe coop? (remote play, streaming, couch coop, controllers or control features)

Something steam did good with steam controller, was the tools offered and be used by most controllers?

You can have multiple layouts, use it on non-controller games with presets or customzie layout, and more?

 

Its fun when they go with new features, not all perfect or maybe much used, but bring some life into the market (their market? 😛 ) one way or another.

Unless a company has Nintendo’s IP, they shouldn’t make a Switch competitor. You can buy an iPad and hook up any console controller you’d like to it and you immediately have a portable console that has a webcam and Bluetooth!! And tbh the Switch display sucks, it’s ok for the price but nothing to aspire to. The iPad Pros already have 120fps screens too. Am I wrong?

According to the video they a making a device running on an AMD SOC. That would mean games could run locally. The iPad solution would work if your streaming games from a gaming PC, but this device could possibly run some games locally mean you wouldn't need to stream those games.

If so, No thanks, but then it supports a special VR mode that is improving upon or the inbetween of the phone VR and VR headset.

Would be way more interesting to see anything else really, maybe try to get a new Linux distro that, 'just works' for all games a basic software without any quirks.

Thats pretty much the distros that work for gaming. You will never have a Linux distros that works with all games. Because games coded for Windows sometimes use resources that are Windows specific, such as direct X. Or the games have bullshit DRM that don’t work in Linux.

The problem with these is usually the software side, reason Switch is popular is Nintendo games and games more or less specifically designed for that "console experience". Steam doesnt have to many of those. So Im just wondering who's the target demo for such a thing? 

 

I guess Steam is ok with having niche products though, like Steam controller (discontinued?) and "index".

RDNA3, intel GPU?, stacked die?, DDR5?, Valve including what might be included features as shown in the unreal engine 5? naah, but would cool if it was..

Also how maybe we will see in the summer what AMD will do for RDNA2 cards. Need some scaling support to be on a handheld. (AI)

well they weren't at first, mostly since you had other solutions that focused on a different build and use case.

Its just that bigger devices have often copied the switch design and doesn't offer something as a gaming handheld or as a different device than running a different OS and the "power" it got. From Nvidia shield, gameboy, phone gaming with part support and dual screen setups.

True, but one difference is the Switch has a dock and its very nintendo unlike not a gimmick it actually unlocks more power, so that should be minimum expectation for a "Switch clone"…

 

Game Gear was awesome, my friend had a cartridge with 20 games or so, i think it even was an official cartridge(not sure) and we had so much fun - somehow the sound / music was the best thing in my memory.
