The 3090 isn't supposed to exist in the gaming market - so why have we adopted it like it should?

derpkotacasper

Let me start this by saying, I was curious about something earlier and thought to myself "Maybe I just missed an overkill 3000 Series Titan card and I can just take a mortgage out on one of those. Surely those would be in stock, right?"

Titan marketing doesn't exist anymore. Not only does it no longer exist, it isn't coming back. The RTX 3090 took this subsegment of Nvidia cards that were overpowered, with insane amounts of VRAM, such as your previous Titan RTX cards. The existing problem, and I may not be wording that very well is that Titan marketing kind of expired amongst gamers. You don't often see actual PC builders opting for a Titan RTX over a 2080 Ti. And why would you? There was no point in the consumer class, it was overpriced and we all knew it. The Titan series had it's function in big data, as does the current RTX 3090.

The RTX 3090 exists as a shift in Nvidia marketing away from the Titan line. It's a brutally effective (and actually, should have been 50% cheaper than Titan cards) method to get you to overpay for a card that you will literally never use at it's fullest potential, lest it is going into a data center, yada yada.

Call the 3090 what it is - it's the Titan 3000. The function of the card is the same, it's just rebranded so you'll actually buy it and use it to play World of Warcraft and Minecraft. And Starcraft. You're gonna do some craft. I'd be willing to bet a large portion of the people who actually own a 3090 would be able to function fairly well on my GTX 1050 Ti. Ope. I said it. You don't need all that card, but you did buy into an effective marketing stratagem.

Happy to help.

Remember the GTX 690, 590, 490?
So it's not like we haven't experienced this before. The Titan was only a thing for 4 generations.

The 3090 is often seen as a work card and not gaming card from what I see

if you are just joking and stuff why make a thread for this, people will see it as serious (even tho you have no arguments)

As for OP, people spend their money however they want to

I bought two 3090 and is happily using them everyday, by not using them

-sigh- feeling like I'm being too negative lately

Cyberpunk RTXHype probably sold some RTX3090's....er...I mean Titan class GPU's for sure...
It certainly wasn't the Shadows in Shadow of the Tomb Raider

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

Not here to make you feel dumb, if you want to make a constructive argument then do so, but keep in mind some people will have a different opinion than you, which is kinda the reason for a constructive argument, and all sides may still not come to an agreement at the end. It is what it is, we all learn.

The "titan or not titan" argument has been debated to death umpteen times at launch, in the end it's pretty much irrelevant, it's just a name, and a card that delivers X performance at Y price which is what matters...

My dad works at a datacenter so we get a free 18TB NAS.

Plus a KVM 10 Pro key, and 10 gigabit Ethernet.

Back on topic, I think the reason NVidia called it a 3090 and not the Titan 3 (better than Titan 3000 IMO) is so that they could force you to buy Quadros... oh wait those don't exist anymore... the RTX A line for compute. The Titan drivers had some features unlocked that GeForce doesn't have, and killing the Titan line segmented their markets.
