It would be interesting if Linus made a decentralized personal cloud storage with multiple NAS-es located in different places (via SFTP).

P.S. On a more of a personal need sort of note: I'd be happy if he shows us how to set up a personal FTP server over internet and not only LAN and the difficult part - by using an usb external hdd that's plugged into the router (requires a router with a usb interface and ftp server support). I'm still struggling to set up mine...stuck at the make your own VPN or dynDNS service...cause you can't port forward the router's own IP (192.168.1.1) which is the external HDD's IP as well...thanks in advance! :)

You need to use a company like noIP. They do the dynDNS for you but you will want to enable DMZ on your router and put the ftp server in the DMZ.  You will also want to make sure that your router will not show its admin panel to ip addresses outside the network.

He's talking of an FTP server built in to the router.

The teams don't all have to be made up from people within LTT. ;) Could be LTT team versus two other teams with similar style Youtube channels. :)

Ooorrr...

Alex could be excluded from competition and instead serve as an advisor or judge for all of the teams.

Who is this Alex anyway? (Sorry, I'm still pretty new to the LTT channel) I see an Alex Potvin and an Alex Clark on the team web page. Does he have a forum handle here which I could tag?

yeah his name is Alex Clark @AlexTheGreatish

he is like there ''engineer" sorta...lol

Hiya team LinusTechTips
I'm trying to find informative YouTube clips on how family's can stay connected using Skype or Zoom for older folks.

I suggested to my sister that her in-laws, who are very close with their grand kids,
could with a laptops on both family's tables, have a video Skype dinner catch ups, under the current situation

My sisters in-laws are not technically inclined folk (basic web browsing / banking / light youtube types)
they may be initially reluctant (overwhelmed with the idea of setups vs the benefits of having a sit down (virtual dinner))

I did suggest to my sister that after helping them over the phone (voice) to install teamview,
the rest of the setup and etc could then be done by her

I think that a easy to share youtube or facebook clip with examples showing,
how it can connect people, would be great for all.

I had suggested a laptop (larger screen, built in web cam)
vs a phone or tablet (smaller screen, easy to fall over)

Thank your for time
Julian

ps I love the youtube channel but try to limit how many clips I watch,
same as I try, to only have one cookie from a packet, (and fail on both :) )

You don't need to port forward nor vpn, once you've enabled FTP on the router (and if applicable turned on access from internet) you're done.

Obviously will vary from a router to another.

there's no option "access from i-net", you have to do it manually. Just turning the ftp server on makes it visible in the LAN

that's where I'm stuck...sth isn't configured right I guess, still I'd be nice if Linus made a video about it. He already has done one on the way more simple LAN-only ftp server via FileZilla.

Well you should at least say what router model you have if you want some help (and probably move to another thread).

That's a difficult subject to make a video on becasue there will be many different possibilities and options that depend on the gear you use.

it's a STRONG 1200AC, I've already made a thread in the appropriate subforum. My post here was a video suggestion, not one of seeking help. Thanks anyways! :)

Maybe for his next video, Linus could make the be-all end-all folding rig, using something like the board in this forum post, and a bunch of those mining GPUs with no video outputs...  https://www.overclockers.com/forums/showthread.php/789916-That-s-not-a-folding-farm-this-is-a-folding-farm

This would make him king of the folding at home performance list, and address the major e-waste issue that are those mining GPU's  destined for garbage.

PCIe x1 is no good for folding.

Hi Linus and Team,

Here in Australia we are about to go through the switch from school based learning to online learning. My kids (aged 10 & 11) have made the switch and, since I am a techie, its been pretty easy. I bought them a PC each, 3 years ago, and they are very comfortable with working online. I also gave them web cams, and OBS so that they can make their own videos, which usually means mimicking their favourite YouTubers. As part of the online learning, their teachers have set some tasks that require the students to work in pairs, so the webcams, and the kids comfort with using them have come in very handy.

Sadly, many kids do not have a techie parent to help them at this time. I thought of possibly doing a video on advice on getting started with online learning, but really, I do not have the resources, nor the fame to spread this message as wide as it needs. What this idea needs is someone like you.

Helpful advice to parents could be:

 - Choices on a budget PC for kids to use, vs perhaps, a iPad/tablet

 - Setting up a non admin user account on Windows for a child to use

 - How to set up a webcam for collaboration to keep in touch with teachers and friends (socialising is an important part of school)

 - Online safety tips (sitting near kids and watching them like a hawk, not sharing passwords, stranger danger etc)

 - a health check for your home network - isyour wifi password secure?

Maybe some of the advice is not your specialty, but the PC and networking part certainly is. As for any details you lack, I am sure that schools near you would be happy to share information with you on the latest cybersafe practices for school aged children. They might also share the link to any video you make to a new group of potential subscribers.

Anyway, I hope that I have sown the seed of an Idea for you, and wish you and the team at LTT a safe isolation period

Regards

Craig

Pci-E 1x and 4x GPUs seam useful if you need more video outs but don't have a 8x and 16x slot spear on the motherboard. I think Zotac makes one. I think you could find some Gpu which you could test the 16x and 4x variants and the performance differences.

You can do these tests yourself with pci-e x1 to pci-e x16 and pci-e x4 to pci-e x16 riser cables.

pci express is designed to be modular like that, you can install pci-e x16 cards into pci-e x1 or x4 or x8 slots if there's no wall at the end of the slot and nothing blocks the edge connector ... the edge connector can be partially outside the connector floating.

LTT Should have a Pimp-My-Setup show

LTT should occasionally hold a contest where they take entrees and Linus comes and builds a crazy PC inside whatever case you currently own, and then maybe he helps customize the case as well.. not a well thought out idea but I think it'd be fun to watch what he could do inside a variety of computer cases.
