GME Shorting Video - an unpopular opinion

I have watched LTT for a decade or more. (since NCIX whenever that was)  and along the way I have seen many cringeworthy, or questionable things.  But nothing that ever made me want to stop watching.   

 

The video started with  Linus DERIDING  "wealth inequality."      "its one of the biggest problems of our times"   he said.  Then Immediately following that,  said the words "you know, I'm not all that poor,  I can afford to lose this money."   you know the rest.  

 

Honest question here.  How do you think the employees of LMG feel?  Do you think any of them said "hey I have 1,000" to burn with you.   Do you think maybe the employees of LMG would of loved to split that 50K?

 

Linus intentionally "threw away" 50 grand. everyone with a brain knows what is/was going to happen to GME share prices. He even said "were going to ride it to the bottom!"    And for what its worth, i actually support WSB's cause, and I agree with their point.  

 

I didn't even want to type this out because I know the heat its going to catch, but This level of hypocrisy is just disgusting really.

Im saying how many of his employees can do the same?  just "throw money down the drain"  ... if wealth inequality is a problem, - BY LINUS'S OWN ADMISSION - is it fair for him to have money to burn but not his employees?   based on the Intel series, most of them dont even own their own homes.

So basically you're mad because he saved up $X over a period of unknown time and chose to do something with it that wasn't give it back to his employees because that will magically fix wealth inequality? Should Linus forego all salary because logic and redistribute it all to his employees who we have no insight into how much they make but because they "don't own a home" that means they are being paid like shit?

I also want to tackle your mention of not owning a home because that doesn't mean squat, maybe they don't want to own a home, maybe they want to save up and buy it outright and forego a huge mortgage, there are any number of factors for why someone doesn't own a home and it's not wealth inequality every single time, not by any stretch. We've also only seen 3 or 4 of those Intel videos, you know they have like 20-30 employees at least right PLUS floatplane's probably 20-30 people too?

First off... I'm not headed down the slippery slope with you.     Bottom line.. How many of LMG Employees have "money to throw away."    I dont have a problem with people making money.  Im pretty well off myself, and worked for every bit of it.   But some displays of wealth are inappropriate.  period.

How do the employees of LMG feel? Probably pretty fortunate that they have a job and that Linus/LMG perceived through a pandemic and kept every single one of them employed and working throughout. But you know.... if they get salty about $50K of someone else's money, I'm sure other channels are hiring.

That's the thing with owning your own company... Your salary is a lot higher than your employees, always. It's a perk of the "job".

Also, Linus got a good chunk of that (at least 10k), from Superchats on youtube.

Now you're here, saying he should've gone back on his promise to the community, the whole reason people even donated money to him, to give back to his employees? I'm sorry what? Did you perhaps miss all those times he gave back to them? On Christmas or even recently with Intel $5000 upgrade thing.

The last thing he would want, is to get his audience to turn their backs on him for not following through.

 

It's his money, he earned it. Don't tell others what to do with their cash just because you think his employees are starving or something (they don't and likely earn more than the majority of us on the forum, not to mention the perks of basically getting heavily discounted/free tech)

You have a point in the sense that a lot of the people cheerleading this whole thing fall into the category of "not millionaires but very comfortably well off", selling it as a way to stick it to "the rich." A lot of "take down the fat cats" coming from moderately-sized well-fed cats, so to speak.

 

Me, I don't have the spare cash to piss away on pure lulz and spite. What spare income I do have I'd rather "invest" in something that will bring me more lasting enjoyment, like PC's. But I don't care what other people do with their money, either. 

 

Corps aren't your friends. "Bottleneck calculators" are BS. Only suckers buy based on brand. It's your PC, do what makes you happy.  If your build meets your needs, you don't need anyone else to "rate" it for you. And talking about being part of a "master race" is cringe. I typically dont either. and i dont get real happy about ceo's and their ridiculous salaries either.  But not many of them go around parading it. or talking about "wealth inequality"... and those that do... OK, now thats done, let's discuss.  Linus wants to get involved with a cause that has potential to harm the stonks market, using money generated by the surplus value of his employees work.  Your problem here is that he shouldn't have taken that monetary value for himself, and that it's hypocritical to acknowledge wealth disparity while also benefiting from it under capitalism.  The response is pretty simple - he doesn't have to, and nothing here is morally inconsistent (and therefore hypocritical) because, you know, he's working under the framework of capital as a "job making entrepreneur".  That set of rules says fuck you, he's a pretty good boss.  Now, is that good?  Maybe not.  It certainly isn't hypocritical

Maybe, but that's the same as advocating for everyone to have the same salary, why would someone pursue advanced schooling to become an engineer at NASA, when he could just work at Mcdonald for the same salary?

You cannot have wealth equality, without providing everyone the same thing.

The salary comes with the job you take. If you want to be paid more, there's plenty of route you can take, 

-you can build up experience and either ask for a raise or look elsewhere,

-you can get a higher education,

-you can do what Linus did and make your own company,

-you can even invest in stocks (start small, it gets bigger over time...)

-There's also such things as a TFSA, for which you can invest in a passive High dividend ETF that give back something like 8% per year on your investment. In a TFSA account, you can get that dividend and not pay a single tax on it. Over the years, that will slowly build up if you put in a bit of cash year month instead of letting it rot in a 0.2% interest saving account with your bank. In 20 years, you could easily get $500+ per month, doing literally nothing at all, tax free (15k in an such account gets you $100 per month, it's not hard to save that much money in a few years if you stop wasting it on restaurants, alcohol, soda, etc. My brother waste nearly $300 per month on that sort of junk, for example, because he can afford it)

Im not mad about people making money.. not at all. I'm not even against people (business owners)  making more money than sub*ordinates. They took the risks. Good for them. (with the exception of ridiculous compensations of some exectutives)

He pretty clearly didn't anticipate how much money it would actually mean when he said he'd match the superchats 5x, and given the chance to go back I don't think he would do things the same way.

Differences dilute as companies grow. LMG has >40 employees at this point if I'm not mistaken. Supposing Linus redistributed those $50K between all of them it would be about $1K/person, so maybe 1-2% of their salary? Negligible, that's not making any dent into wealth inequality.

8% is actually quite HIGH for a passive ETF. You'd obviously make more with regular stocks that go up like $1000 in weeks... (like someone who invested in Amazon in late 2019 and rode the wave until today...)
But all things considered, when you compare that to regular saving accounts with your bank, it's HUGE.

High Dividend passive ETF/Stocks are basically required for someone to even remotely enjoy retirement these days.

So, there's actually a very strong counter to your argument.  If there isn't a wealth based motive, you get people who are passionate about the subject instead of someone who checks in for the paycheque and cold not give a FUCK about the career.  Would you rather have a doctor who is loves making people better and spent years studying a craft that they enjoy, or some dude who barely crawled through med school to get fat stacks of cash?  Using the NASA example, plenty of people would still sign up to be an engineer even if there wasn't a financial boon involved, just going for it because they want to be involved in the future betterment of humanity (or because they find it fun as all get out).   Taking the money out of careers and interests puts people where they'd be most suited, because last I checked NOBODY WANTS TO FLIP FUCKING BURGERS!  People would gravitate towards what makes them happy, and if that's flipping burgers, fine.  But don't act like nobody would work on the "hard" goals if they weren't being given a carrot

No one wants to flip them because they are treated like slaves all while having the lowest salary possible.

Give them the same salary as any other highly educated job, and suddenly you will find a lot more people being content with simply flipping burgers, because all things considered, it's a hell of a lot easier to flip burgers than to be a doctor or working at NASA. From the responsibility itself to the studies required.

 

Even if we assume people who are truly passionate for a specific job will still put in the effort instead of taking the easy way, I have no doubt that it will only be a fraction of what we have today. Resulting in the world not having enough doctors or other higher position. But we can't know that without it actually happening.
