Is water really the best?

Is water really the best conducter for a custom loop? I've heard of liquid metal cooling but I'm not shure if that's talking about as an alternative to thermal paste of if it's used in loops. I'm not talking about liquid nitrogen or helium I want something with a low enough viscosity to be used in radiators, pumps ect. but with a higher thermal conductivity than water. Even if it's not a significant improvement if I'm investing in a custom loop I want to make it special. If there isn't a good option exotic tubing ideas are welcome.

Liquid metal is an alternative you can use for Thermal paste not inside of a cooling loop.

I knew it was an alternative to thermal paste but I wasn't shure if it was used in loops as well.

Good luck getting something other than water through a tiny pump and playing nice with all the metals and plastic in a loop

Just keeping this here as a Tbh distilled water would be just fine in your water cooling loop. Although you can buy actual water cooling fluid, which is just water mixed with some chemicals.

I might do an industrial build with copper tubing. I'd be difficult but doable and it would definitely still be a showcase build.

If you're going to to copper you should definitely use a fluid with an anti corrosion chemical additive. Cause that could make corrosion happen much faster.

@For Science! has some great information on the efficacy of coolants.

The tl;dr:
We're dealing with fairly low temperatures here. The closer you can get  to true water, the more effective it's going to be. Additives (even those necessary to inhibit corrosion and growth) detract from the efficacy of heat transmission.

The thing is it really doesn't matter what liquid runs in the veins of a custom loop whether it be water, ethylene glycol, or liquid metal. The reality is that this coolant still needs to drop off its heat into a radiator which is cooled by ambient air. Liquid cooling is in reality air cooling, and so exactly what is inside the loop is non significant.

And to add to this point: you still need to get the heat energy from the CPU to your medium. More specifically: from the CPU-Die to the IHS and from the IHS to the coldplate and from the coldplate to the medium (water). This is the bottleneck for all coolers. The benefit from watercooling is the huge mass of the medium dampening heat spikes (it takes a lot of energy to heat up 1l of water), the bigger surface of radiators in comparison of regular air coolers, their expandability (you can't just mount a second cooler to your CPU, but you can add another radiator, even if it's just dangling outside of the case) and the fact that radiators don't heat up the volume of air they're working in as much. Air coolers dump their energy into the case, therefore heating the case up, therefore reducing the heat gradiant and ar getting less efficient in the end. Radiators are usually mounted either as intakes or exhaust. At the end of the day, just like @For Science!said, they are fancy air coolers - just with bigger surface areas.

you can use glass tubes. also if u want something special or exotic for liquid, you can use Kona Nigari Water. it comes from hawaii and its 400 $ for a 750 ml bottle. if thats out of your price range, you can use 10 Thousand BC water its only 12$ for a 750 ml bottle. although i would use distilled and deionized water for less maintenance. and easy clean up. also if you want to go nuts, you can use silver or gold pipes to keep your water fresh for longer. there is also glycol. it has less heat transfer then water but its less corrosive.

Galvanic corrosion would be something to keep in mind with non-standard metals, corrosion inhibitors can only do so much.

You need to make very sure that any "exotic" coolants work with the tubing you use and the materials of the blocks - especially acrylic tops. Unless your very much know your way around in terms of chemistry, material sciences and physics I'd stay away from fancy experiments with non-standard or at least unknown coolants and materials.

In terms of glass tubing: massive bragging rights could be acchieved if you manage to actually custom bend glass tubing - can be done. But it usually takes a professional like a glassblower and/or manufacturers of scientific glass products to pull it off. If you can teach that yourself and pull it off: Water Cooling Master Artisan level. If you design your own blocks as well and manufacture them with borosilicate glass top plates as well: Water Cooling God.

For my first loop copper is quite ambitious I'm not planning on learning how to blow glass.
