Loramentum - A watercooled, wall mounted rig - Fan and lighting upgrade! 27/01/17

Maki Role

Saw a wall mounted rig few months ago and ever since I've been wanting to put one of those things above my monitor.

Even tho its not finished, your build is by far the best I've seen. Awesome work!

Wondering how much it will cost to hire someone to make something like that (not including the hardware)?

I get the point with you feeling that the fan is naked without the corsair sticker. maybe you can throw on another one, like Snef did in his Toxic buildlog

solves the problem and looks better (imho)

My Build log of the Satan's Cave PC Desk Project is starting to get in action! Come check it out if you feel like it  :)

TBH I wouldn't even want to know what the labour on something would cost at present.  The machining alone was pretty costly and that was before any of the finishing work I had to do.

OMG why have i not subbed yet

All aboard! Plenty of seats left

Hmm, I might think about that.  It would be a pretty simple deal to print off a new sticker, food for thought.

UPDATE!

So all my packages arrived today!

Including my ascendancy to the mechanical keyboard master race!  I was a bit tired of typing on my Apple scissor-switch keyboard, which although pleasant for documents, was not too good for gaming and would leave my fingers aching.  So I opted for a Ducky Shine 3 with Cherry MX Browns, which I must say are heavenly to type on.  Naturally I'll be modding the heck out of this thing later on, although not for this project, I'll reserve that for Azure Redux.

I also received the plastic and the on/off switch.  It's a yellow ring vandal switch, but will mostly be hidden, I may see to the aesthetics too and make it black.  I also finally got to work on the stand!

Don't make me slap you for changing the WASD keys on the Ducky. It's a crime against Ducky, my friend. A crime against Ducky.

What do they know of England, who only England know?

Bah they're not staying there, was just playing around with the key removal.  Never had a mech keyboard before so I was quite looking forward to seeing how simple it was.  Although, I will be changing every key on the whole board soon enough :P

Every keycap or the actual keys? :o

Just the key caps hehe, can't imagine desoldering all the switches would be particularly fun.

I feel like doing it to my old keyboard, changing the blue switches to the browns. Speaking of which, what do you think of the mechanical switches? :)

So far I'm loving them!  The response is just so smooth and pleasant, plus it's not as loud as I was expecting either.  The clicky-clackiness is also rather satisfying, never figured I would actually be agreeing with so many on that front haha.

I have the same keyboard and I must say that it is going strong. Totally worth it! Welcome to the Ducky master race xD

Glad to be part of it, should have joined ages ago.

Very nice keyboard :)

Cheers!  Can't believe I took so long to launch onto the mech scene.

Now if only there were some decent 4K monitors around.  I wouldn't even mind paying for a high-end one, just even those seem to be a bit rubbish, with firmware issues and problems sticking to 60Hz.  I swear we were supposed to be flooded with them by now?

The mechanical keyboard master race would like to invite you to join with complimentary keycaps. :P

I am not fond of the 4K monitors. I am actually one of those random and arguably strange people who prefer a faster TN panel. But then again, I wan the fastest reactions in CS. :D

Where did you get the inventor files that you used to make the initial renderings? I'm working on something vaguely similar myself and don't want do go through the trouble of recreating every last part accurately.

in a post on like, the next page or two back someone asked the same thing, and i believe he made them all himself? and may have offered to send the files to the guy that asked

I asked the same thing myself. He said he made them himself and that when he got a chance he was going to zip them all up and upload them for us. For now just wait patiently and you should get access to them soon enough.

Holy shit he made them all himself? Fuck that takes some dedication and skill.

Yeah that certainly makes sense, I know plenty of people who share the same preferences. For me a 4K panel would be really useful for photo work and 3D modelling/rendering, but at the same time it would need to be a colour accurate IPS one, which doesn't seem to exist right now. I mean Dell has a really expensive 60Hz IPS out at the right size, but apparently it's plagued with firmware and framerate issues. I'd be tempted, but to drop that sort of money would mean it would have to be perfect right out of the box.

I really wanted to see if I could get into CS, but I simply don't have enough time to become decent at it. Seems that's my number one barrier to PC gaming as a whole in fact. I've had 15 years, including a lot of free time after school, to become good at console FPS (Halo in particular), but of course now with work and whatnot I can't find that sort of time to become good at any PC title. Thing is, I wouldn't care, except my friends do have that time and as such are leagues above me! which means I basically have to play solo or drag them down.

As @EmeraldFlame mentioned! I made all the parts myself from scratch using measurements from the actual parts themselves (bar the GPU water block which was by eye as it hadn't arrived). Took a while, but was definitely worth it IMO. I'll try to see if I can upload them tonight for everyone, bear in mind that the Inventor files have no shaders or textures applied and are just bare models. I did all the rendering in Blender using Cycles so the shaders etc. are in those files. I also haven't included things like the radiator fins as again I made that in Blender as it was more efficient poly-wise.

UPDATE!!

First up I was to apologize for the first two, out of focus pictures.  I accidentally left my camera on autofocus and didn't notice that it had decided that the background what what I wanted...  Flicked it back into manual for the last ones at least.

I didn't have much time this week to make progress, simply put life had me finishing work at 7-8pm with a 1 1/2 hour commute on top of that, add in dinner and you can imagine there wasn't much time around.  However, today I got to finish very early, so managed to complete the stand legs! (Well, mostly complete.)  I filed and machine sanded the edges of the pieces so that they were pretty smooth and consistent.  Remember that I cut these pieces with a jigsaw, so they were a little rough and inconsistent.  It took roughly 5 hours of sanding, but I got them to where I wanted.

Next was a lot of fine grade sanding by hand.  I went through 120, 320, 400, 600, 800, 1200 and 2500 grits and finished off with a round of polish.  I'll probably go over the edge with a specialist plastic polish so as to get a really good shine.  I'm very happy with how things have worked out, they're very similar to the renders I made earlier.  The best bit though, is that they work!  Once the brackets are in, this rig'll be very stable indeed.  You may notice that I changed the shape of the cutaway a little, the new one offers more flexibility in regards to rear cables etc.

Just after machine sanding (grr blurriness)

Absolutely amazing. I wish I had the skills and the money.

Bah, skills you learn on the way.  Money?  Well, it's not as bad as you'd expect.  You'd be amazed how far you can push funds with careful planning and forethought.

How does the top of the board not flip over D:?

Aah I think that's mostly some wacky perspective going on there.  It actually leans ever so slightly back onto the heavier sections of the stand itself.  It's not going anywhere without a strong push.
