Stacking into a new dimension - SK Hynix announces 4D NAND flash sampling now

Most latest SSD drives are made with 3D NAND Flash chips that ranges from various fabricators. Hynix has taken a step ahead and announced that the 4D NAND chip they've been working on since last years' announcement is now in production. The first model will come in 512 Gigabits but the company claims that they can further improve it to 1 Terabit per chip.

SK hynix has been promoting 4D technology from the 96-layer NAND flash products that combine Charge Trap Flash (CTF) with high-integrated Peri. Under Cell (PUC) technology. The new 176-layer NAND flash is the third generation 4D product that secures the industry’s best number of chips per wafer. This allows the bit productivity to be improved by 35% compared to the previous generation with the differentiated cost competitiveness. The read speed of cell increased by 20% over the previous generation adopting 2-division cell array selection technology. The data transfer speed also has been improved by 33% to 1.6Gbps adopting speed-up technology without increasing the number of processes.

As the number of layers increases in NAND flash, the cell current reduction, the channel hole twisting, and the cell distribution deterioration due to double stack misalignment occur. SK hynix overcame these challenges by adopting innovative technologies such as cell interlayer height reduction, layer variable timing control and ultra-precise alignment and developed the industry’s top tier 176-layer NAND flash.

The Company also plans to consistently enhance its competitiveness in the NAND flash business by developing 1 Terabit (Tb) products with doubled density based on 176-layer 4D NAND.

Thoughts: While 176 layer or 512Gb chips already exists in the market, I think this is a great step up for SATA SSDs, maybe now we can see them go above 600MB/s. On the other hand, weren't they saying they have shortages eariler? The first batches must be rather expensive then.

So... 200TB?

I love it. I still remember SSDs when they  were close to $3000 for a 1TB Samsung Evo

Nice and all. But, I do hope that quality nand flash doesn't get really low. Yeah gets cheaper, but more quality one needs to get cheaper too. 


Also I wish to see Samsung release a consumer version of their Z-NAND SSD some time.

For datacenter usage, the future is EDSFF (Enterprise & Data Center SSD Form Factor). Formerly the Intel "ruler" concept were you slide in an entire SSD module so you can pack in as much data in a 1U server.

Thoughts: While 176 layer or 512Gb chips already exists in the market, I think this is a great step up for SATA SSDs, maybe now we can see them go above 600MB/s. On the other hand, weren't they saying they have shortages eariler? The first batches must be rather expensive then.

SATA III can't achieve higher than 520MB/s in practice. Sure it's a 6Gbit interface, but if all of that bandwidth was available it would max out at 750MB. NVMe drives can already do 4GB/sec, that's BYTES, not bits. The problem is the interface is a bottleneck because it's underlying controller is limited to 1 PCIe lane, which is 250MB at PCIe 1, and 500MB at PCIe 2.0. So in practice what happens is computers put multiple SATA ports on one lane, so in theory a PCIe 4.0 lane could have 8 SATA drives on it, however 4 PCIe 4.0 lanes like that of a NVMe drive has, is equal to 32 SATA III drives.

 

There is just no reason to use SATA anymore for your primary storage devices. After all the logistics gets back to to sane levels post-covid, You'll likely see most flash chips going into NVMe drives and embedded devices, not SATA drives. It just doesn't make sense to cripple the drive speed when the flash chips are capable of more, and there is no point making "SATA speed" flash drives.
