We have all heard the jokes of how any dongles you need for a MacBook, but how many do you really need?

Also, as a bonus, what do you have plugged into those dongles?

I could use some help with this!

please, pm me if you would like to contribute to my gpu bios database (includes overclocking bios, stock bios, and upgrades to gpus via modding)

Can't speak for myself (my computer is a Windows laptop, not a MacBook), but I have a relative who uses two - a Thunderbolt-HDMI to watch stuff on the TV and Thunderbolt-VGA to use an external monitor.

However, he doesn't have a particularly modern one, and crucially, his is of the last generation to have USB-A ports.

If this thread is still going when he upgrades, I'll report back on how many he uses with the USB ports gone. as he does have some USB peripherals

Thanks for reading all this by the way!

By the way, my desktop is a docked laptop. Get over it, No seriously, I have an exterrnal monitor, keyboard, mouse, headset, ethernet and cooling fans all connected. Using it feels no different to a desktop, it works for several hours if the power goes out, and disconnecting just a few cables gives me something I can take on the go. There's enough power for all games I play and it even copes with basic (and some not-so-basic) video editing. Give it a go - you might just love it.

Typing this on a 2019 16" Macbook Pro - 4 thunderbolt ports.

Dongles in use:

1. Thunderbolt to HDMI for second monitor

2. Thunderbolt to USB type A for flash drives (and just whatever I feel like plugging in)

You missed zero as an option :P

I have two monitors with USB C video inputs and USB hubs, which I plug my keyboard/external webcam into.

Other than that, I own an ethernet adapter, an HDMI adapter, a card reader, and a number of USB C to A adapters (the card reader I've had forever, I use a C to A adapter with it).

Wouldn't say I particularly use any of them often though.

Macbook Pro 16"

  1. usb-c to HDMI for a 4K 60Hz monitor
  2. usb-c hub
    1. 100W power in
    2. 1080p 60Hz monitor
    3. usb power cable for the laptop stand fans
    4. iPhone 6s as a webcam
    5. Logitech 720p webcam as a backup
    6. usb 3.0 hub
      1. 2x Wireless dongles
        1. Drevo Blademaster Pro
        2. MX Ergo wireless trackball mouse
      2. JBL Pebble speakers
      3. Jabra usb headset for conference calls
      4. Razer Deathadder for when I game

I have to plug the 'webcams' into the usb-c hub directly because otherwise they become bandwidth starved and drop frames.

I have a 2x type C to dock from dell for my Windows laptop...didnt know that would be considered a "dongle".

A "dongle" to me (and work) is a USB key encrypted to unlock something, for work, on Windows, I have around 20-25 "dongle"s for various access.  Kind of ridiculous if you ask me

When at home (which is always these days lol):

On 12/10/2020 at 12:56 PM, sounds said:

2. Thunderbolt to USB type A for flash drives (and just whatever I feel like plugging in)

Similar, but DP and type A is for Anker 10 port hub, which has external storage, xbox360 controller and 1/4 jack, and a few random usb charging wires connected for random devices :)
