I think it would be fair if it was universally available, but Nvidia gets to cherry pick the titles it supports with AI training. So to compare only DLSS-enabled titles and say the 3080 is the best card because it's faster in ~50 out of thousands of PC titles is kind of silly. Pure raster vs pure raster is an objective standard.

 

This is the same thing we saw with S3 and the MeTaL API 20 years ago, it blew the doors off 3dfx/ATi/Nvidia in the small number of titles where it was supported but was objectively inferior elsewhere. Times have changed in a lot of ways but back then consistent performance with no tricks ultimately won out.

Your info is wildly out of date, DLSS doesn't need specific AI training anymore as of version 2.0. Implementing it now is only slightly more difficult than implementing TAA.

Good cause i dead set on going with AMD. If there's one thing that i learned with my friend's 1060 after my 390 left me on foot, is that Nvidia still has issues with Linux. On Ubuntu 18.04LTS getting random screen flickers, on wake up from a standby my browser session turns into a rainbow of colors, audio output stuck on hdmi when i want it out of the aux ports for speakers and headphones.

Tried both open and nouveau drivers, tried removing radeon pro drivers to see if that wasn't causing the issue, tried purging oibaf repo and revert to LTS mesa, all to no avail. Only thing o haven't is upgrading to 20.04, but that is far to early from my usual schedule (when support for the previous LTS drops, so in 3 years from now).

One day I will be able to play Monster Hunter Frontier in French/Italian/English on my PC, it's just a matter of time... 4 5 6 7 8 9 years later: It's finally coming!!!

But it still needs game specific implementation and a lot of games with older DLSS implementation are stuck with that. Like Metro Exodus that can only run the terrible initial DLSS versions. I'm gonna be hyped when it's something that runs by default internally and doesn't care whether game supports it or not. Then DLSS will be an amazing feature. But until that happens it's very much gimmicky even though it shows a lot of potential. The sooner NVIDIA figures this out, the better. And it would also mean a serious performance edge over AMD without using brute force on HW level.

It will for any game supporting TAA once 3.0 comes out.  Probably if they released it with the new cards the drivers would have had too many issues.

Meh. I don’t see the problem with game specific implementations. A lot of gaming tech is done like that even “basic” things like AA or shadows. Also DLSS 2.0 is being adopted at an insane rate for something that’s proprietary, exclusive to RTX GPUs, and only came out this year.

DLSS is going to be the next PhysX there's no doubt about it. Well actually you need a GPU first to use DLSS which isn't happening anytime soon

And how many run the new one? Like 3 out of which it's always Control getting dragged around. Support is just pathetic even after all this time. Which is why do it game agnostic or GTFO.

It may just end up being RT only. In that case Nvidia would have a huge advantage, as every bit of RT perf counts

If this is true then I would expect AMD to price their card similarly to the RTX 3080, but all AMD has to do is actually make their card available.

This raster performance "leak" would be reasonable enough if it's anything like the 5700XT compared to the RTX 2070 the performance was very close.

I'm talking about game for game benchmarks. For example when i shop a GPU i look at the performance for the games i want to play. Also it doesn't depend on per-game training anymore. It's a universal algorythm now. But there is the point that the devs will have to work with NVIDIA to get it implemented.

Hardware Unboxed revisited the games that currently support DLSS. And basically the conclusion was that it looks basically as good as native on the "performance" modes and sometimes even slightly sharper than native on the "quality" modes while still unlocking more performance.

 

Think what you will about DLSS, but it will be a huge argument in future titles imo. Especially AAA titles will likely include DLSS for the most part in future releases. And what end-user really cares if the performance they see is raw core performance or AI upscaling performance if the result is basically just better performance either way?

What this seems to be is “if DLSS is set up for a game by Nvidia it matters”, whereas if it is not set up by Nvidia for a game it doesn’t.  There is an assumption that it will become ubiquitous.  IF it becomes ubiquitous this may be true.  It hasn’t yet though, and may not.  This seems to be a bit like dual GPUs.  It helps in some games if the game is set up to use it, but if the game isn’t, it doesn’t.  Whether it is or not is totally dependent on how common it becomes. There was a period where many games had dual gpu support, and dual GPUs was considered viable.  That number dropped though and while dual GPUs are still supported on some games it’s become rare enough that dual gpu is seen these days to be more or less pointless.

DX12 and expecting the developer to deal with it killed dual GPUs.  Especially considering a well optimized DX12 or Vulkan title doesn't need it.  I'm excited for what will come from GPU "chiplets" though.

If they actually match or beat the 3080 I think they should charge the same price, it’s time for AMD to stop being the budget brand. 

I always roll my eyes really hard when people expect AMD to be charity just because it's AMD. You should see the news section for Zen 3 processors where people are outraged that AMD dares to charge more for their latest flagship processors than last generation.But when Intel does it everyone is like "shut up and take my money". It's just so hilarious.

I think its more a case that, without competition prices have continued to rise.

Now that we're seeing competition people are expecting prices to lower down to more reasonable levels, so when they dont, they get mad.
