Sure but modern transmissions last a really long time - I've seen one estimate of 150,000 to 200,000 miles (240,000 km to 320,000 km - hilariously they said this was "about 7 year" - which is ridiculous, since 7 years would mean you drive about 30,000 miles/50,000 km a year - which sure some people do, but the average is much closer to 20,000 km/yr) - but frankly for a well built car like a Toyota, there are plenty of cars still on the road with well over 300,000 km.

 

My friend has a Corolla (not sure on model year, but probably around 2010 or 2012) with 340,000 km and he's had very little problems (and transmission works fine).

 

I had a 1999 Buick Regal with well over 200,000 km on it - that thing went through 2 engines but the transmission worked fine until the day I sold it to a scrap yard.

 

If you maintain your car properly, I don't think most people have to worry much about a broken transmission.

Probably speed compensated steering or air ride suspension. It makes your car float and so cushy to drive. It's great for your daily driver

Well they can have a major effect anyway.  Wear is still wear. Nothing lasts forever, and complex systems are only as strong as their weakest point. Proper maintenance can make a gigantic difference in wear though.

I have seen vehicles with less then 100k end up with major work because the owners did drive properly or take care of thing properly.

The other extreme is you go overboard with maintenance and driving with care, a vehicle that normally lasts 350k can last 500k+

I had a car die, as in it’s worth $0 dead dead at 36k because the CVT transmission got out of alignment invisibly which caused it to eat both itself and the engine invisibly.  By the time I found out I had a problem it had gone point of no return so I just drove it for another 3 months till it croaked as there was nothing to be done.  I wasn’t will I get to lie to another person and pass it off as a perfectly running vehicle (which it acted like) a conceit on my part possibly. I donated it.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

At 36K (I assume miles, not km), wouldn't you still be within the powertrain warranty? Granted, the manufacturer and dealer might just write off the car if it's at a point where repairs will cost too much.

I've driven in a 150 HP petrol car (less than a year old) and a 151 HP diesel van (nearly 20 years old), and the van always feels much faster than that car did. It always took ages to get up to speed. Compare this to the van I drive, in which I don't even come close to max throttle and already am much faster than that car.

so whats the torque and weight. that is what makes the van feel faster. it maybe only 150hp but I'd be the torque is 1.5-2x the gas car.

Yeah, that may have to be addressed before long. It may be difficult to preserve the old ways due to the nature of EVs (far fewer parts you can simply replace or adjust), but it would be good to have an alternative if the battery dies prematurely or a motor misbehaves.

 

Software might be easier — add regulations that add conditions, penalties or both if a company takes away a feature. Say, you can do it, but you need to give users sufficient advance notice and a good explanation ("we can't afford free Supercharging for everyone these days," for example).

Automatics with 7+ speed transmissions are generally a fairly new thing. My 2014 Jetta was a 6-spd and you couldn't get one with a larger number of gears. The new Jetta's come with 8-spd I believe.

 

I'd be curious to see stats on that.

More gears the more fragile it is, same space but more gears = smaller gears. Think 12 speed cassette vs 6 speed cassette on a bicycle.

yeah mostly on trucks and SUVs till the last 3-4 years.

That's what I thought too. I looked it up, but what I found on Wikipedia did surprise me a bit.

 

Torque of ±1900 kg 151 HP diesel van: 295 NM

Torque of ±1400 kg 150 HP petrol car: 250 NM

Torque of ±1100 kg 94 HP petrol car: 118 NM

 

That actually makes the diesel van slightly worse in terms of kg per NM compared to the 150 HP car. Maybe it's just better gearing? Or that the diesel engine somehow can do more with those torques? Or that the petrol car is a 1.5L 4 cylinder car, while the diesel van is a 2.5L 5 cylinder car? I honestly don't know.

First gen 2003 Mini Cooper specifically with the CVT. The others were apparently relatively OK. The CVT version was not.  I did not know this when I bought it or I wouldn’t have.  Everything else about it ranged from not bad to awesome. That bit overshadowed everything though. Worst car I’ve owned or driven in my entire life.

i really hate typing in the pin on the driver door num pad and dislike unlocking the one door with the key

To be fair the one I had was unusual crap and the euro version of the exact same car and transmission worked fine.  They put fake shifting in for the US models because it would make it more “sporty” (it didn’t) and it caused massive problems.
