Deciding if I should get the puppy or not

I've wanted a dog for many years now. Each year, I would ask my mom if we can get one. Like every other year, she says no. I might just the dog without my moms permission, what do y'all think and what would I need to know?

Because that's a fine & fast way to lose respect....within the whole family and her especially,....to always have that in mind when her Son wants to do the next thing.. the fact you even think this way strongly makes me feel you are not even ready to take care of an animal's needs,..

 

Even if you contribute financially in the household the dog isn't just a simple thing for the non-owners who have to deal with all aspects of dog ownership.

If its her place, and you get it anyway... your a D... plain and simple lack of respect.

Respect her wishes until you have your Own Space.

Cannot agree more with this. Puppies tend to make a lot of messes around the house until they're trained to go outside or use a pad, they can also chew through wires or anything they can get their paws on. It's best to just wait until you get your own place.

 

They're also a big responsibility, like vet appointments, keeping vaccinations up to date, etc

Unless everyone in the house is in agreement that they want a dog and will help care for it, do not get it.

I know there's much more than that, I'm just letting everyone know that she isn't the one funding everything. People tend to believe these days that everyone is spoiled and has everything handed to them.

Yea I volunteer at a local shelter and dogs are the worse to deal with. Just pee and feces everywhere plus they step and play all over it.

I read that as "owning a dog is less fun than going to shelters and donating them" and I thought you were a goddamn monster that enjoyed donating dogs to shelters just to see their sad little faces as you drive off without them

i dont have the best image in your mind, huh

 

i had 4 dogs and 1 cat, now it's 1 dog and 1 cat, 3 doggos passed away (age related)

it's fun and all, but adopting a pet eventually means goodbye, so keep that in mind and enjoy your time with them

When they're at a shelter, that isn't our priority. Plus they're usually gone within a few days since everyone looses their minds whenever the word goes out that we have puppies available for adoption. Within an hour we'll have 10 families knocking our door down.

There are so many extra responsibilities with dog ownership that unless you have buy in from at least one other person to "co-own" the dog, I wouldn't do it.  You have to be there several times a day (at least) to ensure the dog has food, water, and is able to go to the bathroom.  You have to spend some time every day exercising the dog.  You should then spend a bunch of time socializing with it.  You have to groom it regularly.  If it gets sick, you gotta take it to the vet and care for it.  

And that's only if your dog is well behaved.  

If it has any behavioral issues, you have to accommodate them.  If they chew up the furniture, you have to have chewed up furniture while you train the dog not to chew.  If your dog gets separation anxiety, enjoy wondering what the dog destroys while you leave it alone!  If your dog tends to bark, enjoy making your neighbors hate you!  If your dog gets defensive or nips at people, you have to nip that in the bud.  

In short, they require a ton of time and attention, and they frequently require WAY more money than just food, water, grooming, and a few toys and treats.  If you're not currently sitting at home all day every day, then chances are your life will be severely impacted by adding a dog to it.

A Dog isnt a Toy. It means responsibility. And a legal source would not sell you one anyway.

Getting a dog regardless and basically just saying "Surprise! I got a dog anyway!" is a sure fire way to not only get grounded for life, but to have the dog taken away as well.

There might be reasons why you can't have a dog.

Be it because the lease says you're not allowed to have pets, because of allergies, because you can't be trusted to make rational decisions... etc.

Lease makes the most sense, but the "My mom said no, how do I do this without her permission" makes me lean towards the second.

Op, I'd move out get your own house with a lease that will let you have pets. Look into what dogs actually need, what breeds need what. Personally, when I get a job where I'm home every night I'm getting a Karelian Bear Dog. They're very protective. Perfect for running off bears. However, they are very high strung. If you don't keep them active they get bored and tear stuff up. 

Keep in mind, not all breeds have the same requirements. Many aren't really for first time dog owners.

The initial cost of getting a dog is the least your mom or anyone the people in this thread are worried about. 

It's the hours upon hours every day someone has to spend on the dog and the responsibilities that come with it. All the walks it needs, all the training and mental stimulation, all the vet visits, all the extra cleaning, all the additional expenses which far outweighs some initial cost (like food, equipment and insurance to mention a few). 

 

 

Don't you dare getting a dog without permission. The fact that you have even made this thread clearly shows that you are not mature enough to take on the responsibility of a dog. 

Also, you do sound very spoiled since the entire thread is about your mom denying you a think you want and your plan to get it anyway. Just accept that you can't get everything you want.

I have a 5 month old golden retriever. I decided to get her after getting my own place. It is a lot of responsibility. And if you have people sharing the house who aren't fond of dogs, it's even more difficult.

 

So please, do not get a puppy when there's somebody in the household against it. Get it after you get your own place.

 

And research properly before getting one as I have a feeling you haven't yet. It's a lot of responsibility and my entire arm is full of bite marks and scratches just after 5 months (those baby teeths are damn sharp)

Don't forget the damage to your house. Dogs in particular do not retract their nails like cats do and as such, will scratch the crap out of your hardwood floors as they run around (which the do a lot). Then they'll probably chew your shoes, clothes, anything that's fabric or leather.
