RTX 3080 3rd party AIBs Hitching and Crashing?

End users are coming back saying 3rd party 3080 AIBs are having issues like shown in the twitter thread below:

 

EVGA's card seem to be having the issues happen more to them than most.  Some have suggested it could be driver issues, others have suggested that these AIB Models crash when boosted over 2Ghz.

 

There were no official solutions to this problem that I have seen. However, if issues with crashing in games at higher clock speeds happens, I have seen that it is recommended to manually downclock the GPU by 50-100 MHz. Undervolting may also be recommended via programs like the MSI Afterburner 4.6.3 Beta 2.

imagine either waiting for hours/days to spend almost a thousand bucks or getting scalped for ~2000 for these cards just to have it not work properly, cause its the first batch which like never works properly lol

and this is one reason why you dont buy first run of stuff you dont do it with cars and you dont do it with electronics i always wait like 6 months before getting the latest thing just saves me head aches

True that, but if the card is faulty, then I should be able to return it ^^

Seems to be a different problem. Games never crashed for me. But the drivers still could be faulty and affect performance without crashing

with it being so new meaning from release date i bet they have a new driver comming out and they want to see if that will fix the problems just look at amd it took them months to get thier drivers right so cards would work

TDLR: They believe the power delivery system is on most AIB's not enough, made to match reference which can't handle the highest "boost" clocks that afterburner programs are trying to make happen.

The cards that don't experience this issue, have the more expensive setup (FE and ASUS TUF for instance)

Most likely companies will tune down their afterburner programs to alleviate this issue, but you'll likely get less max boost speed out of it.

 

Since companies promise the core speed, and that isn't an issue we won't likely see a hardware fix for this in upcoming units.

 

I forsee the Asus TUF model to be always out of stock till the 4000 series come out

Another reason I stick to fe. Theres always something with every launch though. Not sure why people would be surprised. But that's what happens when you cant wait.

The main reason I never went with FE before is because of the cooling solution. I use the stock air cooler and the AIBs usually have much quieter solutions. But that has changed.

It seems like FE is the way to go until AIB's sort out the issues. But I think some of the blame is still on Nvidia for a power hungry GPU, AIB's don't have much margin to compete with the FE, and Nvidia is undercutting the FE prices.

Guys watch some unboxings.

 

Many 3000 series reviewer cards and cards used in promotion material seem to have the 6 POSCAPs, but I've watched many unboxings and see mostly 5 POSCAPs 1 MLCCs and 4 POSCAPs 2 MLCCs cards.

 

The msi ventus I ordered is one on the cards that is shown to have 6 POSCAPs when looking at pictures of it, but I haven't seen one in an unboxing, so just the msi ventus has at least 3 different power delivery configurations, its likely other AIB's do also, so I guess it another lottery finding out what power delivery you have.

 

So hopefully most people will be getting the better power delivery.

They're surprised because they listened to the Nvidia shills about Nvidia being so much better than AMD at launch, with already perfect drivers, and no hardware issues ever. The shill's words made sense because they had Nvidia cards in the past that felt like that, even though they were not purchased at launch, or weren't using a radically new architecture. (which Ampere technically is compared to Touring)
