With recent news on Nvidia's Ampere, and incoming news on Zen 3 and big Navi, there is a lot of talk and speculation on what people could be buying in the future. The thought occurs, how new is your current hardware? This is purely about age, and not about performance. I will set up a poll with this post, and will leave it open until some time before Ampere goes on sale to capture a snapshot of what people have "now".

Notes on voting choices.

  • Where possible pick the architecture stated, as there may be some edge cases where not covered where the number generation doesn't fit the architecture.
  • I didn't list Intel mobile CPU examples but for practical purposes assume same generation number as desktop even if they don't necessarily use the same architecture.
  • If you have more than one system, feel free to vote in all categories that make sense.
  • If you own more than one of each type, just count the newest. e.g. if you have a 1080Ti in a gaming system and a 1650 in a 2nd system, you'd still vote Turing even if you mainly use the 1080Ti.
  • If you already flipped your GPU to get ready to buy Ampere, still vote for what you had.
  • When I say new, I'm talking about tech, not when you bought it. If you got a vintage device yesterday, while still using something modern, it is the more modern one you should vote on.
  • I did debate if dGPUs and iGPUs should be split out, but decided not to in the end as it would make the poll rather messy. So it could be you have for example Vega GPU in an APU, and Polaris dGPU, you'd still vote Vega. This goes back to my earlier choice that performance is not what counts here, only tech age. Also it is about ownership, not necessarily use. A typical Intel CPU gaming system likely has integrated graphics. Even if never used, it still counts.

I have an ATi x550 (still works)

Spoiler

AMD CPU: 3900x

Intel CPU: i5 6600

AMD GPU: currently borrowing an RX460 for my secondary rig, but it's not mine

Nvidia GPU: 2070S, I have the 970 but sold both of my 1070, thinking of buying one of it back

Intel GPU: i5 6600

Love the pattern I could choose here.

3 - 3 - 3 - 1 - 1

As for AMD CPU: My desktop is equipped with a  Ryzen 7 1700

As for Intel CPU: My laptop has an i7 7700HQ (Kaby Lake 4c8t)

As for AMD GPU: I have upgraded from my RX 580, but it still is kind of mine, just on an 'extended lending' to someone else I guess :P

As for Nvidia GPU: got a 2070 Super in my desktop currently. My laptop has a GTX 1050.

My 7700HQ has an iGPU

As a comment there, I kinda debated where to draw the various lines. I didn't want to list every Intel generation as there are so many of them, so tried to lump them together skewed towards more recent ones. I chose to draw the line starting Sandy Bridge as I'd argue that's when Core i series really took off in the PC/gamer space. The 1st gen was Intel kinda figuring what to do. Also 2nd gen onwards has AVX instruction support, which forms a key element in modern software.

Since AMD bought ATI, I'd argue you can still call it an AMD GPU, even if it was made before the acquisition.

I think this should need checkboxes so you can have multiple choices per category...

I have a 10th gen CPU but it's in my laptop, so not related to gaming nor a deliberate choice, it just happens to have one.

My SFF build has a 9900K, but it's not my daily driver - that's still a good old 5960X.

My intent in this poll is simply to look at how new stuff is, not how performant it is. Maybe I should add some wording to the effect "hardware that you use at all" but then it'll start getting too complicated in small print that no one will read anyway.

In other words, this is working as intended. It's not list everything you have, just what is the newest you have.

I might actually have some expendable income in the next few months, wonder if the 3070 or Zen 3 will perform well enough (and be at MSRP) to tempt me.

It should be a high performing system based on today's standards. Based on your profile system, it should provide a good performance uplift but if it is worth it is up to your needs and make enough difference for the cost.

What are the chances someone is using as their newest system a GPU that is not made by AMD/Intel/nvidia? I suppose in the enterprise space there are some video output providers that most have never heard of, or old names like Matrox I believe are still there. But for the purposes of this forum they're too niche and not really an interesting consideration.

Interesting idea, but a level of detail too far I think. A given CPU type already implies a certain mobo compatibility. So it is more of a support function than a headline spec.

The poll should have allowed multiple votes, because some of us have both newer gen cpus as well as old ones. My desktop is running on 4th gen Haswell-E, while my laptop is using Intel 8th gen Kaby Lake-R.
