Why would they be using what looks to be a heatpipe CPU cooler for the prototype? From my knowledge, heatpipes do not work upside down...

Not just that, the cooler's cold plate seems to be completely misaligned with the mounting bracket

My god you're right. Also what the heck is that fan plugged into? I think that's a 4-pin fan connector.

Why are you guys worried about the used fan haha. It's probably an engineering sample, not the actual fan at release.

Personally I'm trying to find clues as to whether this is actually real and whether it's relevant. A shot at the back of the PCB is not a lot of info.

Honestly a stock Intel heatsink would probably cool the chip much better than an upside down heatpipe cooler. Even if it's just an engineering sample, they should've known this cooling solution is going to be gimped so hard by just being placed upside down. It's so jank it's hard for me to believe it's a legitimate part.

Pretty sure upside down heatpipes still work well. Here's a test from Gamers Nexus.

Well you wouldn't want to lose out on a prototype I'd imagine, so why not plug it into a good modern PSU?

I might be wrong, but Thermaltake hasn't used that logo in over 5 years, if that's anything to go by in terms of how old that unit is, and it most likely wasn't state of the art even back then, so to speak.

 

Either way, I'm just rambling kind of off topic. This could very well be legit for all I know.

There's nothing about the cable color that determines the PSU quality. It's likely an OEM unit with good performance, but not available to the end user.

 

Tower coolers for GPUs usually are massively overkill solutions. Maybe that's why they added one. The fan at the very least is serviceable

My vote is that the cooler isn't serving as a real cooler, but instead as a powered-on anti-sag device. Real engineering at its finest!
